Hey all,
I have a new cue that has a lizard print leather wrap. I ordered it this way because it looked great but i dont like the feel of the wrap. I'm wanting to go back to irish linen but the wrap is twice as thick as the linen so the grove is cut deeper. What would be best way to put the irish linen on? I thought about sanding the leather down to irish linen groove depth but it would take lot of work and would the glue adhere correctly. Ive wrapped few cues before but it was just replacing linen with linen. Is there a way to double wrap if so how?
Thanks JL Rowe

Sanding the leather is an option, the word tedious comes to mind.

You might try using some maple veneer to build up the diameter.
Using a piece slightly thicker than final size and sanding it down
would probably be the easier way to get it just right.

You would use the same procedure for a wrap grove that was cut too deep, and that is fill it. Some people use epoxy, some use super glue, and some use other types of finish, but this is the easiest way.

Tap, Tap, best way.

I have never done the veneer way and you would have to have the skill to install a leather wrap plus maybe a little to wrap a cue with wood veneer. I myself have always built it up with epoxy. Use the thicker epoxy and brush or rub it on. Let it dry and sand it to size. If you don't want to have to sand it much you can put a few thinner coats on until you get it just about right.

An easy way to build it up is to wrap it with a cotton trine sort of like a kite string or the stuff used to wrap packages. Do a few layers if you need to till you have the thickness you want. Then soak the cotton with a thin epoxy. The cotton will absorb the epoxy. Sand it smooth and complete it with your Linen wrap. It is an easy way and keeps the handle you are building up a more uniform in thickness then if you try to just use epoxy by itself.

I should add, it is best to press the cotton wrap a little before you coat it with the epoxy to have the smoothest and most uniform surface. You can coat with super glue also I guess, but I have always used epoxy.

I used to build up with epoxy and then re-cut/sand back to specs but now that I have U.V. capabilities it is much quicker and easier to spray a couple of coats of U.V. material and sand immediately. It's not often that the problem comes up. The three or four times that I've had to deal with the problem was on custom cues where the had cut their channel a little to deeply and the customer wanted me to repair.

I think I've heard of wrapping the linen in layers, not sure. You fully wrap the handle and linen, and then do a wrap over that one and if necessary another to get the desired height. Not sure but soaking the lower layers in epoxy may be a good idea.
