I like it, Perk. Only problem is, when you play pool badly you get played again.

hmmm..seems like its that way with sex too...back in college if the girl wasnt good the first time, I had to try it again to see if it was a fluke...

Pic of Keith McCready and Sugar Shane. Anyone who's seen Sugar Shane in action knows he's got an uncanny ability to get the action going. He's has a very unique voice that rises above others in a crowd, always brandishing a broad smile on his face. The kid is seasoned beyond his years of age, and it's always a pleasure running into Sugar Shane from Pittsburgh! :)

I'm not sure yet that I lost the bet

Mike

I am confused as to how you are unsure that you lost the bet...she stated right here that she was talking about some chick that wasn't from the states. Um, I'm from the states. Sorry...you lose. Please pay up. Thanx. Real money please. If I accepted counterfeit then I would be an accessory. And I think I am safe if you have my addy. In case you didn't know, in WV we can shoot people that are on our property.

...I met Markus from Germany and snapped a picture of him and Thorsten Hohmann. Hohmann said they spelled his name wrong on his player's name tag, and he had to have it changed because it said "Holhmann," which in German means a hallow person or a nitwit....

Between Thorsten Hohmann's matches, Markus and he were chatting in German. When I passed by them, I was listening to Thosten explaining about the typo in his last name on the player's signage, usually placed on the overhead lights of the designated table. Check out the yellow dragon patch on Thorsten, given to a select group of UPA touring pros. ;)

MT is probably going to shoot me for this but there's a cool little thing called "paypal" :D

That's a good one MJ! :p As for the 10 yr old wanting to flip a quarter to get another hour out of you... CLASSIC!! I've got this mental image of a sweet, innocent 10 yr old looking up at me talking like a seasoned gambler.... too funny!

Landshark, I don't think the girl I was talking about is from the US. I was drunk myself and some things are pretty foggy so I could be wrong. She spent some time over by the window which is why I wanted to clarify which one I was. The pics I have from the Expo are too large even after I resized them so I'm posting a smaller pic but it's not from this weekend....

And Breana is a "seasoned" gambler. While playing Kelly Fisher she looked at Kelly and said, " I thought you were good". We all about fell over. Mike's daughter is going to be a stone cold champion in any game she plays.

This was, without a doubt, the best SBE ever for me. And no, LS wasn't the really, really, really drunk girl at the party. I had a couple of those in my group and LS wasn't even close to their level of inebriation. But, on the other hand......I was a "bit" tipsy myself and soi cannot be counted on for qualified observations.

...32-year-old Shannon Daulton mentioned to me that the stork is due to pay a visit at his household in about one month with a brand-new baby girl, his very first born....

Shannon "The Cannon" Daulton is the life of the party, whether in the action pit or up in Suite No. 1411! ;)

Shannon shoots with a Southeast cue and is usually accompanied by Nat Green, who owns Southeast Cues, both from Tennessee. I was surprised to not see Bobby Pickle this year, who usually travels with these guys.

He is definitely one very strong tournament player to date, and nobody likes to get Shannon as a draw. Every time I seem him competing, he's always dressed to the nines and brings his best game to the table. At the Pro event, he lost both of his matches, 10/9 and 10/9, both heart-breakers, especially the one on the winners' side when Johnny Archer made the 9 on the break.

Shannon visited Keith and myself in our hotel room at the Scanticon late one night, hoping to get one of our secret stash, i.e., Budweiser, a rare commodity at this year's SBE. He made himself comfortable on the small sofa in the sitting area, and he began to tell some road stories from yesteryear. Keith said Shannon used to travel around the country playing pool, accompanied by his parents. He was playing for a nickel and dime a pop when he was a mere 9 years old and knows the action life quite well.

I think that's what I like best about Shannon Daulton, his multi-faceted personality. He knows the action scene, can play topnotch pool in the professional scene, and is definitely the life of any party! :p

I have to agree. I thought last yr was going to be tough to top but I was wrong! John, did we meet at the party? I'm pretty good with faces but horrible with names (MJ can attest to that).

Also, Jam brief as it was, it was a pleasure meeting you! LOL, she was stading outside of the pro arena sweating Keith's match. I knew right away what she was doing. I do the same thing... get out of the room and then peek back in... it doesn't help but I still do it anyway!

You said it best JAM! I've known Shannon since we were teenagers. He was so much fun to watch woofing it up in the pool room trying to get a game and his style of play ability to play are a joy to watch. Shannon is one of the few people that NEVER changes. He's the same today as he was the day I met him... I won't say how many yrs exactly because then I would give my age away... :(

I used to think I was a professional railbird, but not anymore. :p

Some matches, I'm quite comfortable sitting on the rail, but at this year's Pro event, every match was a toughie. When I'm sitting in front of the designated table and Keith, or any player, is aiming for the pocket with me in the line of vision, I'm definitely not comfie. Plus, the eyes are the windows to the soul, as they say, and Keith knows EXACTLY what I'm thinking just from the expression on my face. Sometimes I think my presence and facial expressions may be kind of a shark, though unknowingly on my part. :p

I did watch most of Keith's matches from afar, and every single one of them were tough sweats. He lost both of his matches, 10/7 and 10/7. The one with Troy Frank on the A side of the charts, every time Troy broke the balls, the 9-ball was sitting right in the pocket, duck soup. It's no wonder he made FIVE 9-ball combos during the race-to-10 set.

The format was alternate break in the Pro event, with the breaker racking his own balls. At one point, a neutral racker was called in during the match between Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant and Danny "Kid Delicious" Basavich. I got a chance to speak with Hillbilly later about the racking scenario during this match. He said that when a breaker racks his own, it causes a great deal of concern for the opponent in some instances. I mean, after all, there are books written about the art of racking, the do's and don't's. EVERYBODY discussed the racking problems which occur all the time in tournaments, and EVERYBODY agrees that there should be NEUTRAL rackers, at least in the semi-finals. And I agree 100 percent.

It was great meeting you, too, Timberly. I think this year's SBE was a smashing success, too, and I've gotta give a big round of applause to the 55 staff persons -- especially CarolNYC for lending an ear and Barbara for providing me comfort food in the form of Hershey kisses :D -- and, of course, the man himself responsible for this pool extravaganza: Allen Hopkins!

...I got a great picture of Gary "Bushwhacker" Nolan, who told me he runs a pool room in Indiana, Pennsylvania, now....

And here it is. Gary was sweating just about all of the action games on the lower level. He was really enjoying himself big time.

I've mentioned before an Accu-Stats tape I've got of The Bushwhacker versus Keith McCready. Gary used to have very long brown hair, like most fellows did in the late '70s, early '80s, and he was a fierce opponent on a field of green. The video recording was X-rated because of the colorful commentary! ;)

...Tony was very gracious and allowed me to take his picture downstairs. Tony Robles and Jennifer Baretta are putting on an exhibition which is a new pool game incorporating dice, poker, and billiards. They drew quite a large crowd....

Tony Robles dresses like he just walked out of a GQ magazine. He's got a sense of style quite different from most of the pro players, a very quiet unassuming-type fellow. However, there's nothing quiet about him when he's in combat. He's a strong breaker and can run out in seconds, if given the chance. Keith had to bring his best game to the table in the first round.

Tony "The Silent Assassin" Robles is one of New York's finest and definitely an asset to a sport that cries out for professionals who do it with dignity and grace, a true gentleman on and off the table.

Wrong night John, wrong night! Timberly said Friday night. And I was pretty close to your groups level that night, but at least one (apparently two, lol) was far worse than me. ;)

Jennifer Baretta at the SBE!

Downstairs to the right, the first thing you saw was the booth where Jennifer Baretta and Tony Robles were putting on an exhibition. This vendor was surrounded with spectators watching the two pros compete in a new game concept with "volunteers" from the crowd. ;)

Jennifer is a real cutey pie and was quite popular with the fans. She allowed me to snap her pic alongside the vendor's exhibition table!

Billy Ussery Jr over Jerry Hager in the finals.

North Carolinian B.J. "G.I. Joe" Ussery is an up and coming player. I've been reading about his conquests in the Carolinas for sometime now, snatching quite a few tournament wins on the regional tournament trail.

I've said it before and will say it again, B.J. Ussery is definitely sponsor-worthy. He's a clean-cut kid who holds down a 9-to-5 job during the week and volunteers at various functions within his community. He's also quite popular with the ladies on the rail. Make no mistake about it, B.J. Ussery is a rising star and is one to watch on the horizon.

Check out this trophy he won for winning the Men's Open at the 2005 Super Billiards Expo!

JAM,

Did Keith and Brandon ever lock on this year?

As always, thanks for your dedication and committment for keeping everyone informed. Your pictures are awesome, and you have a talent for writing!

For the Senior Men: Isaac Runnels over Larry Szwaczkowski in the finals....

I have YET to get a good picture of Ike Runnels of Chicago. How in the world I snapped this one with one eye shut and one eye open is beyond me. :p

At any rate, he won the Seniors Open. Ike is definitely a strong player, but his game of choice is one-pocket. Here he is with his trophy. He was proud as punch, too, wearing his Hustlin hat and shirt. By the end of the Super Billiards Expo, one in three persons was sporting the Hustlin logo in one form or another. I know I got me some! :p

Jenn,

The one thing that bothered me (and some other tournament staffers) about BJ was that he wore headphones during the final match. We thought that to be quite rude to do so, but there wasn't any policy about this mentioned during the Player's Meeting.

I mean, what if his opponent wanted to stop play and call over a Ref or something and BJ couldn't hear him?

Next year there will be a policy on this.

Jeremy

Jeremy, Keith and Brandon were both competing in the Pro/Am event which ended about 11:00 p.m. or so Saturday night, with their first match of the next day to begin at 10:00 a.m.

Brandon looked a little tired, and I know Keith was worn out Sunday morning. However, Brandon's stakehorse was still ready, willing, and able after Brandno got knocked out of the Pro/Am, but Keith ended up winning a couple more matches and ended up in the finals, which eventually was won by Shannon Daulton to the tune of $4,000. Allen Hopkins added $1,000 to the first-place prize monies in this tourney, trying to boost up the payout to the winner.

They were tearing down the tables downstairs when the tournament was over, and Brandon Ashcroft was nowhere to be found. The best day for them to have done it would have been Saturday night when the action was fast and furious, but due to the early match scheduling, both players elected to wait for a better opportunity. I still like Keith's end in this match-up.

Here's a picture of the runner-up posing with a smiling Shannon Daulton holding his cool trophy for winning the Pro/Am tournament. Notice he's wearing the Hustlin logo, like Ike Runnels was when he won the Senior's Open. :p
