Superball reaction from Diamond Smart Table Rails!!! WTF?

What is up with some of the 7' Diamond Smart Tables having rails that react like superballs? All of the tables at the Ohio BCA State Championships (supplied straight from Diamond) reacted like they were made of superball rubber! Even at slow speeds, a ball would bounce off twice as fast as when it came into the rail! It was extremely hard to figure out how far balls would bounce off the trails and with the combination of Simonis cloth, the tables played horrible in my opinion. Way too fast for such a small table! It made simple shape shots extremely difficult and if you had to play pinpoint shape, forget about it!

Where did these rubbers come from anyway?

not the rubber

I don't think it's the rubber. I think it's the height of the cushions. Someone will set the record straight, but i believe if the rails are a bit low then the balls fly off the rails and if the rails are to high the balls slow down.

I highly doubt it had anything to do with the rail height!:)

There was a rumor about different rubbers used...

Glen, are you out there?;)

It don't matter what cushions are used, no cushions make a table play like a pinball machine without the help of either humidy, or low nose height, or both. Diamond hasn't changed their cushions lately that I'm aware of, not on the 7ft's at least. The 9fts changed to Artemis Intercontinental K55, but not the 7ft's.

The table mechanic at the tournament you're referring to was Johnny, did you bring up any complaints about the play of the tables to him? If there is a problem with a Diamond table that makes it play like a pinball machine, if the mechanic on site is made aware of it, he can fix the table, but he sometimes needs to be made aware of the problems first;) Being made aware of it at the beginning of the tournament, means it'll be fixed before the tournament continues on, so it plays right. Making everyone aware of it after the fact, does no one any good, especially if the table(s) could have been corrected right off the bat. Even with low cushion height, there are things that can be done to the table to make it slow down and play right:D

Everyone was complaining about it, so I'm sure whoever was there representing Diamond knew about it. By the time people had a chance to play on them, the tournament was starting. It was not just one or two tables that played that way either, it was all 40 of them.

Thanks for the input Glen! ;)

question

Glen

Can the rail height be adjusted on all types of tables or just the diamonds?
My rails seem a little dead and am wondering if they could be raised or lowered to give them a bit more life. I was told the rubber is good so maybe the height needs adjusting.

Yes, you can cheat cushion height a little bit, but it depends on how much has to be cheated to make a table play right.

how about an 1/8" thick wood shim all the way around the table. I have had to do that a few times when I was younger. Nothing lately, guess I'm doing things right...now.

I was 15 or 16, didn't know how to do anything really. I was just a helper, the head guy got a nice free pen though. The customers name was Rocko, you don't forget a name like Rocko.
