Support your local pool room?

Perhaps it is as simple as high gas prices. Add to those competition from compulsory tax-supported venues such as pro sports teams, school soccer, civic centers, et al. Mix in a little property tax, zoning bullcrap, smoking restrictions, the drive home, and there ya go. All of these drain resources and create lost opportunites to play at the pool hall.

In Denver, you could play a different bar table tournament every night of the week and not go back to the same bar for a month.

Still true. See Colorado Cue Times' tournament schedule.

After the bar tourneys, we'd usually end up back at the pool hall that we frequented, the Billiard Institute.

A very educational place: gritty, diverse, and occasionally alarming. I must get out there again, now that my son is big enough to defend himself. ;)

For some reason, I thought it was a Walgreens now.

Cheers,

The Billiards Institute is still listed in DexOnline.com at Colfax & Sheridan, (303) 232-1394. But I get a "mailbox full" recording when I call.

Also, I can't imagine BI listing itself under "Arts, Culture, & Entertainment". Perhaps Dex has erred again.

Reminds me of the recently bereaved widow who called a firm that was incorrectly listed under "Funeral Homes & Directors." She sued the Yellow Pages publisher when someone greeted her call with, "Body shop!"

> I can see where Tammy is coming from to a point. The old-timer's room here in town that has been here for 30 years or more has become more of a poker room than anything else. The regulars support the ROOM itself, but not POOL itself. You can't even play on 2 of the 4 tables now because there are so many chairs and stools piled in there, and if there were no chairs, you aren't allowed to uncover the tables because "those are for poker now". I heard one older guy just the other day talking about how the poolroom was going to hell in a handbasket because there were 2 Spanish speaking guys sitting there drinking their beer, minding their own business, and speaking to each other in Spanish. Since when is the room GOING to hell,it went to hell long before I started playing in there regularly. The tables haven't been recovered in consecutive YEARS for at least 5-6 years, and when they are, they are covered in the absolute cheapest horseblanket cloth made. The ball sets are at least 15-20 YEARS old. They didn't even have ball trays until I bought some and just left them there. You had to carry the balls to the table in a 3 gallon Turner ice cream bucket. You got looked at funny if you cleaned them, laughed at for using your own cue ball or chalk,or someone tells you "this isn't TV pool" for calling a double-hit foul or push shot. The tables have slate seams busted so bad you can't shoot the cue ball straight across the table one diamond to either side of the side pockets, the spots have holes in them deep enough the one ball sits 1/16-1/8 below the surface of the cloth. The pocket liners move around when you make the corner ball hard playing 9-ball,so you have to adjust it before breaking so the liner doesn't kick the ball out,and the leather drop pockets have holes sewn shut with bread bag twist ties. This is what I have to look forward to if I decide I want to play someplace other than a bar. As bad as it may seem to Tammie,I'll bet even the place she's talking about is better than that. If it were here,I'd be behind it 100%.

Yes, I do......:D And, BTW, where are you???? Heard you moved to Chicago again.....

Missing you! You understand what I mean, don't you? You realize who all I'm talking about.....it's really just confusing to me.

You've heard about all that's going on here, huh? Big shake-up in the "video" business, you know. That has everybody looking over their shoulder now too.

Your old team isn't going to play this session, either. Don't know what's up with that, except that YOU aren't there to play with them!!!!! :p

While you are there in Chicago.... do you mind strolling over to the IPT office and picking up a little "present" for me????;)

Fill me in on what you are up to these days.....

Tammie

Yes, I'm back in Chicago again. Pool is different up here now.

Yes, I heard about the "video" shake up!

Yes, I can pick up a little "present" for you. You are going to be at the Rosemont tournament right? Send me a PM.

Let me first say, I think you guys do a great job. Good food, good leagues, sexy waitresses, good poker and tournaments, very reasonable prices, and oh... did I mention the sexy waitresses?;)

As far as getting more of the players to support you, I don't think there is one single answer. Everybody does things for slightly different reasons. I guess we are creatures of habit.

I don't know why my team isn't playing. You do have the most competitive league in town (and the state for that matter). They should be in it.

Hope to see you next month in Chicago.
