Looks like he's getting his due respect from the bookies.

Efren, Busta, Manalo at 14/1,
SVB, Yang, Wu, Alex P at 16/1,
Alcano at 18/1

Pretty good company. Also, home-court advantage is probably factored in a bit for the Pinoys, and even the Taiwanese players are "closer to home" than Shane. Arguably, then, Stan James perhaps considers SVB the top player in the world right now, if location were factored out. I guess they were watching the BCN stream...;)

How about Shane vs Yang in the finals?

Home field advantage wouldn't explain why Efren, Busta and Manalo are favored over the two best nine ball players in the Philippines, Dennis Orcullo and Ronnie Alcano. These are the odds of sentiment, not the odds of reason.

Yang, who beat Orcullo in a long race, should be viewed as a co-favorite.

On paper, at least for me, Yang, Orcullo, Alcano, and Van Boening are the four co-favorites. I am sure that American futility in recent WPC events explains, in part, why Shane's odds are not shorter.

This is a tougher tournament to handicap then the Open. After the initial DE round to narrow the 16 groups from eight players down to four, it is single elim. all the way. There will be 25-30 players who have a shot here.

You have to like the filipinos and the Chinese players though. They both have such a good work ethic and a dedication to the game. If a player from another country wins, it is an upset, unless his initials are SVB! Souquet is my dark horse pick.

Odds are based on how they think the betting will go, not on who they think should be favored to win. If Joe Shmo was playing and they thought twice as much money was going to be bet on Joe Shmo than on the rest of the field, Joe Shmo would be the favorite.

This is identical to what I wrote. By the odds of sentiment, I meant the odds that bettors would produce for their most sentimental picks, which, as you've noted may not be their true odds of winning. We clearly agree here.

long are the races when it first goes to single elimination? (I forgot)

Last 64 and Last 32 .. Race to 10.
Last 16 down to Semi-Finals... Race to 11.
Finals... Race to 17.

All winners break.
