I was in Manila last year for these tournaments and had a great time.

Saw SVB there last year too. Hope he plays and does well.

Saw Shane a couple of nights ago at One Side. He is here only for the Masters. Corey and Mike Dechaine are representing the USA in the World Cup.

I haven't been online in days due to some unfortunate occurrences. First I broke a blood vessel in my leg lifting a heavy bag into the overhead bin on the flight coming over. It was BAD! I had to go to the hospital immediately on arrival and and am still limping a week later. I got a dose of food poisoning as well a few days ago. And that ain't no fun either. Thankfully, I'm feeling better and I start my work tomorrow. Sweating pool should put me in a better frame of mind.

Didn't really feel like playing but naturally I got hustled to play the minute I set foot in the door of One Side. The regulars know that I like to play One Pocket and Banks and will bet a thousand or two ($25-50), a hustlers game of pool, no backers needed. JJ jumped on me to play some more One Pocket. He is the guy who beat me for 2,000p ($50) last year at Paquiaos pool room. You have to understand this guy is a full time hustler, living in the poolrooms and laying in wait for guys like me. His specialty is robbing foreigners who are only average players. I told him I didn't have a cue and really wasn't up to playing. Someone thrust a nice Mezz into my hands so that excuse was no good anymore. I then explained that I was dead out of stoke (true) and would play Bank Pool. He was hungry for a game and readily agreed.

JJ wanted to play a race to three for 3000p. I would only agree to a 1000p ($25) a game. I hit a few balls and surprisingly felt pretty good on the Metro table. I could "see" the banks and that's half the battle. It amazes me sometimes that a good player doesn't even see the right banks to shoot. He passed up some good ones to play me safe. In 9-Ball Banks you better shoot when you get the chance. I don't really mind firing at open long rail banks, especially if his strategy is to keep playing me safe. Like I said he doesn't understand the game that well and thought I would sell out or something. Instead I made a couple of long ones, and followed each one with a short rail bank. I won the first game 5-1. In the second game he decided to fire away. These guys learn quick! He had me 2-0 and 3-1. But I got a look at the open balls and ran three to reach the hill first. That little run seemed to deflate him and he scratched on his next turn. I stepped back and took dead aim on a wide open long bank and swished it. PAYDAY!

JJ quit after that game. I have to tell you that after all these years it's still satisfying to beat a hustler in his own room. The money is secondary, $50 won't cover half my daily expenses. It's somehow being able to still come with it and make a good (and much younger) player hit the rack that I love. I view a match like this as a personal challenge.

Tony Drago came in right after my game finished. Not so many guys will challenge him as he is known player. But soon enough he had made a game with a young kid (19) called Boba, or something like that. I had seen this kid play a couple of years ago against an even younger kid who also played lights out pool. Let me put it this way. Boba would be head and shoulders above any teenager in America, except for Jesse Engel. And he would be the favorite with Jesse as well! This a kid who would be a match for just about anyone this side of the SVB's, Archers, Morris' and Hatch's. If Dechaine wants action here he can start with someone like this, who could very well surprise him. This kid is a serious player, second echelon in the Philippines, right behind the Orcullo's and Corteza's.

Boba was a little too confident and too cocky though, and made a couple of critical errors, allowing Tony to take down the cheese. They talked about playing the next night for 30,000p (about $700), but I wasn't feeling well enough to go, so I don't know if the game came off or not.

Thanks for the reports Jay, keep it up! I believe you are talking about Johann Chua? Very promising if he could get his priorities straight..
