I am surprised to see that Konstantin Stepanov managed to snap this off.
Konstantin is a young Russian, age mid 20s, and was the #1 ranked in Europe three years ago, finishing high in every Eurotour-event, plus medals in the European Championships and awarded with a spot on the Mosconi Cup.
Since then his game has dropped a little, and even though he knocked Efren out of the World 9-ball Championship in 2007, he hasn't performed like he used too in the last 2 years.
Definitely good enough to beat Shane Van Boening, but I guess that the score was a result of SVB underachieving while Konstantin played his normal speed. If they both performed their top speed Shane would have won that match.
Will be interesting to see what people in the arena (or those who have watched it if it was on live-stream) has to say about the match.
No matter what it is great for Konstantin's confidence.
Konstantin has perhaps one of the most beautiful strokes, rhytm and playing style in all Europe, so it would be fun to see him perform well in this event. Unfortunately I don't think he will be able to keep his game going for the whole event.
