IMO that was a mistake having anyone other than South West cues do the refinish. Plus the pin doesn't look right nor the ferrules, rings, and bumper look weird among other things...Maybe Greg will chime in..

It looks like the top shaft has been re-plugged and re-threaded.
Was it striopped ?
The ferrules also show some glue lines at the bottom.

The screw's beveled tip look odd too.
Better get this authenticated.

SW Franklin

As Tim said, never ever let anyone work on a South West other than the SW Shop!
Especially a Franklin Era Cue.
I would send it to them still to see what you have.
At a quick glance l see many issues.
The Pin is beveled, the bumper is wrong, the Butt plate is beveled at bottom, 1 shaft has been plugged & re tapped! The biggest issue for me is the Black Veneer @ AB position looks so fat.
I hope l am wrong for your sake, but SW will 100% know what is what so get it shipped.

You guys are amazingly knowledgeable!!! Hats off to you sirs! Great Eye. The AB is not SW it was an Irish linen cue that badly warped. It is an SW I got the letter from them. I guess I'm not patient to wait years to get it done in LV. So I just ask the local guy to do this.
The fore arm n butt part is SW I know it's not a sound decision but I love playing with it. And I have no plan to re sell it.

O M G!!.... What a shame..With the fact that SW isnt using gabon ebony anymore these cues are and will continue to go for a premium.. Except yours which now may be ruined..Like I said, what a shame...

At the end of the day, that's all that really matters.
It's your cue to enjoy as you see fit. OR.....
let the 'experts' here tell you what THEY want you to do.....
with YOUR cue.

I totally understand that people sees the SW as a "classic " but now I turned it into "hot rod" that purist will objects.
Nonetheless I think hotrod is better for me at the moment as I could drive it. Maybe later when I'm ready to part with the cue I will send it back to Laurie and forget about it for a loooooong time.
At the end of the day the cue gives me chill when I runout the balls. And is not a bad looking cue??

It's too late for ANYONE to "tell" him what to do...unfortunately.

What is the history on that cue? i sold a predate Franklin 10 years ago in that exact combination but with a wrap. I swear that's it. I had it refinished by Laurie and had 2 shafts made with ivory ferules. I don't recall if it had one or two original shafts as well. Truly a mistake on my part. I should of never had it refinished and just had shafts made. It was probably the best hitting cue I've ever owned. I never hit another ball with it after I had it refinished. I sold it to pay for my wife's ring.

I bought that cue with 3 shafts and there was a letter from Laurie for the new shaft as well. I bought that cue around 9- 10 years ago from Darrin Hills. Yes it's still the best hitting cue I have. That's the reason why I did what I did. I believed this cue is made to play not sitting in the closet as collector item.

That's the cue. Darrin's wife at the time put it on the auction sight for me.

I understand it is what it is now but I sure hate to see a classic like this altered. It would have been better to have sold it at a loss than what it is now. Only SW can restore this cue to it's former self.

better for who? The people that collect cues? If you are a guy that liked the cue and wanted to play with it, I don't think it would be better for him. As KJ mentioned, its his cue, he is happy, whats the issue?

My point is, the cue is only original once. This cue is unique in the fact that JF built it and there is a finite number of them out there today. If we don't preserve these limited cues, there won't be any left for the next generations to enjoy and collect.
