Sw prototype?

I was scanning Ebay and ran across a cue that LOOKS like a SW. I know there are many fakes out there running around, but, short an LOA from SW is there any way to know for certain if it is real or not? This cue on Ebay also has letters had written on the joint face/shaft, I think it says PROTO 7 under the bumper and on the joint face and MS on both shafts. Any info here would be of interest.

Huh?

I am unsure how to post a link, but, the title of the item is "High end unkown cue". I just want to learn the ins and outs of identifying cues of this nature,

it is unlikely that it is a southwest cue
they are custom cue nmakers and have no need to make prototypes or to label them if they did,because they make so few it would not be necessary
most of their cues have the SW pin that is easily identified
702 870 9615 is the southwest phone number to ask such questions or order yourself a real one
 
If the guy knows that there is ANY CHANCE on Earth that it's a SW then it wouldn't be up for auction this way.

He is hoping that someone will take shot that it is and the bidding will get up around 4-500 for what is probably an import SW knockoff.

SW does not make "prototypes" they make cues. They have always made cues. There is no need for them to make examples and practice pieces and certainly not to write on them. With a ten year wait who thinks that they have time to make "prototypes" and especially of simple designs like this one.

I say that the time it took me to write this post is worth more than that cue.

How would you know if it was a real SW vs a fake. I owed a predate JF in the late 80's. I know about the pin #'s. I would like to know if there is that one thing that Southwest does to a cue that can not be duplicated or replicated. I remember something about useing fiberglass in the butt under the butt cap for weight and ballance...

Neither of mine had the "SW pin". That is, they didn't have the cactus on them, or any other markings. Both of mine were made when Jerry was still alive. Other than the pin, I agree with your post.
 
This seller knows exactly what he is doing and covers his *ss with mentioning he is not saying it is a SW prototype. Does it have the # on the PIN that SW uses, or maybe they didn't do it on any prototypes if they exist? He is hoping to get the bid pumped up a bit to make some money on a knockoff. If he had any thought that it was a SW prototype he would get it verified and the starting bid might be a bit higher lol...

PASS on this one.

Thanks for clarifying on the pin. Still verification would be made if there was any hint that he had a SW since he could make more money. Doing the low bid to get it pumped up a bit is what he is trying to do so someone buys it with the hope that it is a SW prototype.
 
Its without doubt a SW copy. It has the wrong bumper for one...the one in this cue is the standard taller version with the rounded edge thats used on most all of the cheap import copies.

Missing the point of the thread maybe

I am not at all interested in this cue.....I think the same as all here....my question was and related to the cue on ebay....is how would you tell the real deal from a copy no matter how well it was made. I have seen a few useful tips such as the bumper, ring indexing, ect..ect.. or is there no other way than to get a LOA?

It is difficult for someone to tell who isn't an expert. With some sort of history and/or an LOA on can't be certain. I once bought a "SouthWest", the guy who sold it to me bought it from someone who sold it as a SW. Everyone who played with the cue and knew what SouthWests feel like thought it was a SW. I sold it as a SW. The new buyer sent it to Laurie and she informed him it's not a SouthWest and further more the pin size was wrong for a SW.

So the cue ended up all the way back to the guy who sold it to me.

I don't think that SW does anything other than the dates on the pins which are not replicable. And getting down to it even those are possible to replicate for anyone who really wanted to.
 
so.....

To sum everything up, there is not a conclusive way other than a LOA from Southwest.
