Swanee Final live V.Foldes vs Oscar

As loose as they were playing I would guess they chopped and then put on an exhibition.

7-6 Foldes, race to 11.

Who's better, Oscar today, or Ernesto in his prime?

Ernesto! But not by a large margin. Ernesto frequently had wins over top players. He was a contender in any tournament he played in, and can still bring it from time to time.

Just watched replay. Anybody else notice how reserved Mataya was? Either they told him to cool it or he was somewhat medicated maybe. He actually did a pretty good job without the rants/histrionics.

I've been saying the same thing, Jay, but the younger generation doesn't believe me!

Nobody is a bigger Ernesto fan than I am. I played him at the original Hard Times in 1976 or so and many times since. His high end might have been better from time to time, but his son Oscar seems to hold that level more consistently.

Of course Ernesto worked hard most of the time and that might have affected his game some. We will see how Oscar does after taking over Hard Times in the near future. Ernesto raised a fine young man who has been one of the top players in the USA. You are right, Ernesto can still bring it from time to time.
