I am moving to sydney next year, I have done a lot of research online and the only thing I could find was some bar leagues are in western sydney suburbs. The next best thing would be to join a local RSL and play snooker. I think some of the local RSL's have pool also. Good luck, if you find something good send me a message.

I live in Melbourne and pool is very popular here but snooker is still more popular. About few years ago we had a World Pool Junior in Sydney. It proved that Australia is interested in pool. We've got few pool halls here in Melb. Hopefully in the next few years pool can be as popular as snooker.
For anyone who plans to come here, bring as many cues with you as you can cos it so darn hard to get pool cues in Australia and to buy cues from overseas would cost you a fortune in shipping cost.

I'm living in Sydney, in the inner west about a 15 minute bus ride from the CBD. I haven't found a room with American-style tables but I honestly haven't looked for one very hard, and as has already been said the easiest and cheapest way to keep occupied here is to join an RSL that has snooker tables, as it'll only cost 5 bucks or so for the yearly membership and the tables are free to play on. They usually do handicapped weekend tournaments for snooker and English billiards (I lucked into a win on Saturday for the billiards!) for money or meat tray prizes and it's a fun environment and a great way to play locals.

There are snooker tables in the CBD , I think, but they're in the only expensive, exclusive RSL around, so you're probably better off playing in Drummoyne in my neck of the woods where the tables are free. I've also been sourcing some carom tables in the Korean and Vietnamese neighborhoods, if that interests you. I miss 3 cushion the most and want to get back to playing.

Absodamnlutely. I didn't bring any cues from the US and had to buy a crap one here, which is a terrible idea. In fact, I had the idea of buying a snooker cue here to send back to my brother as a birthday present but it's so hard finding anything decent in this part of the world I ended up buying online and getting it sent to him in the US from Canada!
So yeah, for anyone coming here, I'd recommend getting a $100 or so Dufferin snooker cue and bringing it along.
If it is anything like Adelaide you had best get yourself a decent snooker cue and learn the rules of 2-shot 8-ball because 2-shot was by far the most popular game I found in Adelaide. It is actually a fairly good game in some ways, your potting ability will go through the roof, but pocket blocking becomes a major strategy because you cannot intentionally make your opponents ball or it is a foul, that single rule almost ruins the otherwise great game.
My wife & I lived in Manly for about 6 mos. I joined 'Fishos club for like $10/year for me & my wife. They had 4 snooker tables, a golf group food, slots and a bar. It was great.
In downtown Sydney there was a place I went to periodically for their weekly tourney I think called City Tats. Of course Fishos and Tats are abreviations for something that I cannot remember.
The whole experience was awesome. I met a cue builder by the name of Peter Hanley and there where a couple of top snooker players palying out of the City Tats club, which by the way has a health club facility.
I'm jealous of you moving there. Thruogh the folks at the club I was able to find weekly 8-ball tournaments in pubs with rounded corners on their 3 1/2 x 7s. It was a trip. But they do play by different rules in 8-ball.
