Table Identification/Opinions - Born Winner?

New user here - been lurking for a while but as a novice, I've got a lot more to learn than to offer so I do a lot of reading and not a lot of posting. I figured tax refund time was a good time to pick up a table for the home so I've been looking around for a few weeks now and this weekend was able to grab a freebie. No harm done for $0 but sometimes things are worth exactly what you pay for them so I need to call upon the collective wisdom of this forum.

I picked up a table that looks exactly like a Gold Crown III minus the Brunswick logo on the ball storage trim. To be honest, I thought it was a GC until I started taking it apart. All of the metal parts - pocket castings, mounting brackets, etc. - as well as the gully return boots are stamped "born winner" which I have to assume is the brand. It is a 9 foot table with a 3-piece, 1" slate.

Looking at the GC manual which I was able to find from this forum, the construction is almost identical. The legs, stretcher, rails and aprons are all assembled eactly the same and even use the same bolts/fasteners. The only difference is that the base frame is not nearly as solid.

The table is solid wood - no particle board or veneer. I thought the table would be in bad shape so my original plan was to paint it but the wood on the aprons looks so nice it would almost be a crime to do so. I like the look of the table and I'm no snob so I would have no problem with it in my house as long as it can be set up properly. So my question to you guys - is anybody familiar with these tables and do you know whether or not they can be made sufficiently playable?

CT,

On 11-26-2008, "kugelrund" posted a thread here seeking info on replacement pockets for a Born Winner table. SDBilliards responded and said he knew where some replacement parts were.

A Google search showed that kugelrund (Billiards) is an upscale pool room in Salzburg, Austria. His website has a ton of photos in the gallery. One of those photos shows 15 or 20 black tables just like the one you described.

Although I've never seen a Born Winner table, the fact that yours is solid wood is a good indicator that it is not a cheap imitation. I'd say you hit a home run when you found it.

Thanks for the info, Joe. Those are certainly some nice looking tables. Good to know that I may not have spent the better part of Sunday morning hauling around a heavy load of firewood...

While I'm at it - can anybody recommend a mechanic in Houston who wants to have a go at re-covering and setting this thing up for me once I've got my room ready in a few days?

Beware and do not use a cloth called Born Winner as it's a horrible, worsted cloth with knots galore! Also, (if I'm not mistaken) if you need to replace cushions, I believe they have K66 profile and not K55 so measure first before assuming they have K55's. If you'd prefer K55, get one of the (qualified & highly capable) mechanics on here to recalibrate the rails for K55's.

Give Cuephoric (Shane Johnson) a call 817-471-0764. He was in Houston the last time I talked to him but he does move around.

Thanks, TablePro. I actually did find the thread on the Born Winner cloth so I know to avoid that. I think the quality cloth manufacturers are pretty well known so I'll be OK there.

And I should probably post another thread looking for that Houston mechanic...

Wish I could post a picture but the thing is taken apart in a spare bedroom right now. I'll try and remember to come back and post one once I've got the table assembled. Gonna take a few more days to get the room prepped and the table all cleaned up.

Have you fixed your "problem" ;-) I haven't fixed mine yet. :-(

What i know: "born Winner" is a manufactor in Taiwan. He produces castings for (pool)tables...

For me i am looking for another way: I want to change all my 13 cushion-frames completely. Just the frames, not the table. I have 2 offerts from European producers and looking forward to get other one.

Greets from Austria,
Robert
