Table spots...

I have been playing on my home table for 3 years with no spot installed. I have been hesitant to install one as I'm afraid the spot will disrupt the ball travel. Im I overthinking this are they so thin it does not effect the ball?

Personally I use a paper hole reinforcement sticker. It's cheap and easy to replace. The balls don't roll off that I've ever noticed. I think you're right to ask but it's not really going to make balls roll off. The paper reinforcement donuts also have the benefit of helping to set the front ball in the exact same place everytime you rack.

I used to not like using a spot but then it became apparent that since I mostly play rotation games with a big break, using a spot will save your cloth from getting a front-ball-downward-pressure hole.

the 'donuts' tx mentioned above may be a happy medium though I don't know how protective they are for the cloth.

btw, of all the regular spots I've tried, I like and use Tefco brand.

best,

Spots disrupt the ball's path? You don't thing your theory has been disproved by about 7474682887884877 shots on 2874664789 tables?

they do, but to mean its like, eh, moved about 1/64th of an inch, im ok,

but no stickers on my table, I will draw on the cloth before I do that

I dont own a table, but I dont like the spots anyway. In my opinion they really dont protect the cloth as well as one might think. Look at all the tables in a local poolhall with worn in spots and the cloth underneath. Its just as in need of replacement after time as the rest of the table. I prefer when a table mechanic marks the spot and the center line. Will the spot hold the balls in place better, Nah...I dont think so about that either. If you're that concerned, I go with the Magic Rack templates (and the rest). They hold the balls tighter than any racking system I've seen. Yeah, its annoying to remove it after a break, but its worth it not getting a slug rack. The template doesnt really affect the ball travel much during the break, but it will move a slow roller. I know the OP was talking about having to use a Spot or not, but I thought this might help make up his mind.

I can't tell you how many games of One Pocket I've lost because the object ball, instead of going into my pocket, has ricocheted of the spot and gone into my opponents pocket. It is not only frustrating, but completely unexpected when it happens.
I remember playing one evening when at one point in the game I was almost tempted to remove the spot with my pocket-knife. Since it was at a dinner party in my girlfriend's boss's house, I decided the fifty-dollar bet wasn't worth the trouble it would cause and I left the spot in place.
Another time I was having sex on the table top when my condom was snagged by the spot, ripping it to pieces. I was unaware of the mishap at the time and nine months later I got screwed again.
Out damned spot!

A paper spot will cause a ball to change direction a little. I have seen it happen many times.

I use spots but I actually sand the edges of the spots before I place them on a table to reduce the change of direction effect.

It thins the edges enough to make some difference.
