Taiwan or Philippines?

so which is cuter, the pygmy mouse lemur or the tarsier? i heard prince charles was given a tarsier when he visited the philippines although im not sure thats a good idea. it's probably dead by now....
interesting post, buddha. i learned that the area in and around bohol island in the philippines is one of great biodiversity. too bad there isn't much interest there ecology-wise

thanks for the interesting links, cebuanoninoy (btw, any relation to ninoy aquino? :) ). i heard there's also a great whale- and dolphin-watching site there. dont remember if it's surigao or siargao....

I think the Taiwanese players are better looking for sure. Look at Yang, Wu...they all look clean and well groomed, with cloths which fit them nicely.
The filiopino mostly have greasy and out dated haircut, with very uncoordinated fashion sense, their shirt and pants are dirty, and out of style--what is worst is, however, that what we see on Tv is the result of thier best effort to look presentable...

For the presentation and promotion of the sports, look is so very important.

I like how the Taiwanese like Fong, Yang, and Lee present themselves on TV. I think it is gross that Reyes plays without his false teeth, and Reyes, Parica, Bustamante, Luat all have very greasy looking haircut--curious if they all cut theirs in the same store? The hsirdresser should be shot!

A haircut can be greasy?

And you think Wu is a looker?

Asides from being amazingly prickish, your post is simply untrue. I have never looked at Bustamante and thought, He needs a new wardrobe, or a different hair stylist.

For christ's sake they're pool players, and if you fancy Yang's fobass eye for fashion by all means give him a hug next time you see him.

Greasy-looking...actually, really disgusting. I can feel the smell from watching them on TV.

I am picky. It is untrue to u, because you never thought about it...but I do.

So, let see here, they are pool player so ...what...what r u trying to say here? Pool player = poorly dressed? Pool player has the right to look terrible on TV and no one can say a word about it?

I think Yang, Wu, Fong... look clean and presentable. Like the snooker players in the UK. Presentable, and more pleasant to watch especailly for non-pool players.

The only one that looks OK is Alex, he has alright fashion sense. One time, i saw him wear a pair of white socks in his suit, with black shoes, that was so terrible.

If you are the kind who loves to hug guys you deem fashionable, be my guest. Dont be shy... :D

HAHA!! This is funny! I know it's rude but i just had to laugh when read this. never noticed before but now that you mentioned it, .....

i guess reyes was never one for fashion. i've read that given a choice he'd rather be in a shirt, shorts and slippers when playing. and he said he's more comfortable without his false teeth. oh well, whatever works...and in his case, it's worked for him very well! and we all love him for it!

django is always dapper and neat, but someone ought to tell him that no socks and black shoes with baggy pants are way out of style. still, everytime they take a close up of his hands while bridging you can see that he keeps his nails clean and trim. now if he'll only lay it off the gel....

alex has a fashion sense, alright, now that he can afford it. although, i think he (or all the filipino players, for that matter) would rather dress casually. i remember during last year's wpc he wore a really flashy suit and almost lost terribly (or did he lose that match?). luckily for his next match he wore his usual oversized collared shirt and he won that one handily, all the way to the championship.

fong pang chao used to wear these really formal attire (like when he won the wpc) but recently he's been wearing casual shirts to his matches.

all in all, i guess the players wear what is comfortable for them and their style of play and in the end, that's really all that matters, isn't it?

Yes you are right. I liek the snooker approach whereas everyone wears a nice tux. it makes the sports look so high class and exclusive. I think the Japanese are doing that with their tournament--with players wearing bow tie and a vest. It looks very nice on TV in my opinion.

In the San Miguel tour they wear black vests and that makes 'em look classy.

yup, the vests really add to the ambience of the tournament. Can't wait for the next leg of the SAn Miguel Asian 9ball. I think it's going to be held for the first time in Jakarta? Also, can anyone tell me why they only have 4 legs this year? last year there were 5. the first year there were supposed to be 5 also but due to SARS it was reduced to two -- Singapore and Manila. anyone know the reason this time around?

Vietnam and HK out

I guess the Billiards Association of each country didn't want to cough up the $$$ to have the event done in their country. They didn't see it big enough in their respective country.

I for one was watching the daily games and hangout with the players around Hong Kong last year. That was a great experience.

Just my 2 cents guess.

Hot Streak

Looks like the Filipinos are on a hot streak as of late.
Not only winning here in the Asian Region from Singapore, Indonesia, Bali, Japan but also there in the U.S. courtesy of Sambajon.

Check out the front page of http://www.azbilliards.com/

This is truly a very welcome development for the Philippine pool. ;)

This time its Gallego, Lining, and Sambajon. Don't they ever run out of good pool players there in the Philippines? :)

Hi Cebuano, hope all's well.

As I see it, the Filipinos are on a permanent hot streak. It probably has something to do with the fact that they are, quite simply, the world's best pool players.

Seriously, in the last twenty years, can you remember any real period in which the Filipinos as a group were unsuccessful. I know I can't.

What we have here is a case of sustained excellence.

I am an avid AZB'er and I try to follow the current issues and discussions in the pool circuit. And I can say that among the contributors, I can say that you are one of the most informative and articulate.

I thoroughly enjoy your comments and insights on the players especially the Filipino players. My friends and I make it a point to watch these guys whenever they play within driving distance from our place.

I have a number of older friends and who have been playing pool for a while and have seen a lot of good players and they all agree that the Filipino players are the best players on the planet. And these guys come from a varied ethnic background.

Also, I enjoy your description of the places to go in the Phil. It sounds like I am reading a tourist brochure.

for the benefit of the pool loving public just like i do. :)

I'm kinda curious about one thing, Ninoy. Would it be possible for some of these players to apply for some kind of sports visa so they can come here to the US? If so, any idea how hard can it be?

I remember when Dodong used to come here to play, he had a multiple entry visa for a number of years. He made good money when he was here playing a lot of money matches that we set up for him. He was giving a lot of weight then but he was still winning and it came to a point that the players here in VA really wanted to play him just so they could brag that they played against Dodong Andam.

If somebody or some organization can do it for these players I think it will really give a boost to the pool scenario and reputation of these Filipino players.

I know a lot of people who would pay good money if any of the Filipino pros can just stick around and give lessons. That way they won't have to be looking for money games all the time. Their revenue will be steady and assured.

Kick these ideas around with your friends because ti sounds to me that you are a well heeled gentleman who is really well connected and can make things happen..

By the way, Ninoy, Dodong stays with us and my friends whenever he is stateside. The rest of the players like Nikoy, Warren, Bebeng and most of the Filipino contingent look us up whenever they are in VA area....

wow! real nice article there, ninoy. i would like to know more about this 15 year-old player, Mark Mendoza. if he's as good as they say he is, then he could give that equally juvenile taiwanese player Wu a run for his money! Anyone out there have any more info on him?

and who is this jeff "bata" de luna? any relation to efren "bata" reyes? hehe. i know it just means "kid". how old is this jeff, anyway? any other good young guns from the philippines that we need to know of (so we can get out of their way)?
