I want to take down a shaft by approx .25 mm - what grit should I start with so I don't oversand the shaft? Thanks for your help!

220 320 400 600 1000 if u want then seal and wax they your done. use a nice big piece with constant movement to get a nice smooth flow no low spots. also sand laterally for a second after each grit with the lathe off

make sure you use a lathe too...

make sure you measure dont go too long. anticipate for the smoothing process. for example if your 13mm dont make it 12.75. make it like 12.85 bc then you smoothing and sealing it will take some off. you may only need to start with 320

I like Dave's 220 through 1000 grit method. I would add that you should cut your ferrule down with your lathe tooling instead of sanding it to size. Then blend the shaft to the ferrule with the sandpaper. The ferrule will often not sand as easily as the wood and cause you to get a big dip right behind the ferrule if you don't cut it down.

Apart from all the good advise above, when the paper gets hot to your hand ,it is getting too hot. Change the paper and take your time. Heat can cause you problems.

Along with Chris's note about cutting the ferrule down first, be very careful with the 220 behind the ferrule. Might want to sand that lip down with 400. I normally seal after 400, then sand out with 600, 800, 1000, and 1200, then wax. Is everyone else sealing at a higher grit? I'm not using Chris's sealer though.

I seal at 600 but resand with 600 then 1000 then wax. I also use a buffing material on the ferrule.

Most times I want to take some out of the middle and not off the ferrlue much. 13.2 mm can be very playible as long as the middle isn't too fat.
