there has been many a post on here about playing for a lil money to bring out the best in you.

today at napa league i faced a young guy in 9 ball him going to 4 and me 3. i lost 4-2. i decided to offer a lil wager for a rematch. even race to 5 for 20 bucks. i am not much for gambling but i just wanted to see for myself it it would make me play better because i just did not have much focus during our match.

he said sure if i gave him all the breaks, the 7 out and i go to 9 vs his 5 . i said wtf ? !! . i countered i give you the breaks even race to 5. he said thanks but no thanks and put his sticks up.

guess some people dont wanna gamble unless they have the nuts lol.

He doesn't want to play that is why he asked for such an unreasonable spot. He feels a little like a winner by hearing you say no to his offer. Don't think much of it. Fact is, you don't want to play with him anyway he is as much as telling you he will not gamble or lose anything. Leave him alone and just stay on friendly terms. Nothing wrong with him not wanting to gamble. I sound like Dr. Phil but I have seen this a thousand times.

Often someone will ask for a spot and if you say yes they find a way to back out.
You don't really want to play these people, period. They will lose nothing but if you make a mistake with the spot you may go off should they actually get up and play. In other words, you can go off to a guy you can't win a dime from. He is as much as telling you that.

for not wanting to gamble or him not being much of a gambler whichever the case may be he sure knows the lingo. heck i would not even know what he was saying if i had not learned it during my time on here.

if i dont want to gamble i have no problem coming right out and saying it but to each his own i guess.

Dear lorider, I do feel you to some extent.

Myself, I live in Europe and I often find it difficult to find a money game without having to deal with a longwhitstanging argument about how many games I should give up or whatsoever.

I am not a great player, neither do I want to play for big money. Twenty euros (even 10 euros) per a short set is completely fine with me. I just cannot play without some kind of bet, playing ''for fun'' seems like a waste of everybodys time.

However, I find that nowadays people are not willing to bet anything unless they are certain of their win. I thought this is only a problem in Europe, but apparently you have similar issues in US as well.

he probably did learn it here... and has a very detailed opinion of how to improve...:grin-square:

He just beat you

You were trying to take away his win by asking him to gamble so you would feel better...plain and simple. Suck it up and accept your defeat. You should have been able to focus as your team was behind you and hoping you would win!

you are reading too much into it. matter of fact there are several guys who happen to match up after league every week.

i dont gamble too much with them but thought i would make him an offer.

i happen to have a match with an apa 5 tom night after league. i am a 5 also. he asked me last week but i could not as i had my gf with me and she had to go to work early in the morning.

so we agreed to put it off until this week after league. its a race to 5 playing 8 ball on the big table for 40.00. aint much but hey its apa what do you expect ?:D

i think he has the better of this match because its on the 9 footers. he plays on the 9's twice a week in league and i only play on them about once every 2 months but i think i play smarter than him so we will see.

That guy has no gamble in him! Heck, I'll play anyone if I get the breaks and the wild 1 through 9!

So he was ranked higher than you in the league and wanted a spot? Interesting plan he had.

It's been that way in the US for a long time. I agree that playing for "fun" just isnt much fun , even if you just bet a buck a game or a cheap set it tends to make you focus more.. In practice it helps to learn to play under pressure...you may need it some day!

I agree. Players want to feel as if they have a chance based on the race, wager, spot, or game played.
All things that speak little to nothing in regard to the actual skill-set a player brings to competition.
If one simply bears down and "gets tough" it's amazing how insignificant these factors become.

No doubt, these pre-gambling moves are as old as I can remember in the pool world.

I agree with Mac. Dude didn't want to play and was just being a smartass. He wasn't going to turn down free money if you gave it to him, though.

I've been around pool for 30 years. This is exactly what happened. He called you a nit to your face and you didn't even realize it.

its funny how some can come up with a hare brained opinion by reading one post and not know all the facts.

so ... you been around pool for 30 years huh ? well i started playing in bars when i was 16, i am 59 now. aint much i aint been involved in or witnessed myself. i did take a 20 year hiatus doing the raising a family thing though.

i feel i would have been a nit if i had asked for an 8 ball match .after losing 9 ball to him.

this league happens to be a laggers choice league. which means whoever wins the lag gets to choose what game to play. upon me winning the lag i chose 9 ball simply because i wanted to work on that game. winning for the team did not matter because they have no interest in going to the nationals. i am 4th in points and am already eligible for the singles division if i so choose.

for some odd reason this kid plays a whole lot better 9 ball than 8 or 10. if i had to win for the team or to stroke my ego i would have chose 8 or 10 where i am ranked better than him. as i said i wanted to work on my 9 ball.

his handicap is as follows.. 32 in 8 ball. 57 in 9 ball, 36 in 10 ball.

mine are . 57 in 8 ball, 37 in 9 ball and 49 in 10 ball.

after losing 9 ball a nit would have asked for a rematch in 8 or 10 ball where he would have had the nuts so to speak.

The specifics are kind of unimportant, IMO.

You lost and the challenged him to a $ game. Whether or not you were trying to save face or not, the appearance of acting so is there.

He was just checking to see how wide open your nose was and if you were trying to step out of line.

your line of reasoning i can agree with.
