What's the billiard scene like in Tallahassee, FL? Any pool rooms, sports bars, cuemakers, leagues, tournaments? I know Jacksonville is pretty active in the billiards scene, but what about Tallahassee?

Thanks,
Zim

There are two 14and1.com straight pool leagues underway in Tallahassee with a third forming for fall, if you need the league operator info please PM me.

I think my buddy Larry Knox still has Snooker's Billiards down there. It's a real nice room to play in, near the college.

I have spent alot of time there and the people are great. I like the rooms but I really don't consider there to be a pool hall that meets my requirements. I feel a pool hall should have a significant amount of 9 foot tables with good felt. the room that meets that requirement is on campus. It is called snookers. I spent a lot of time there but there aren't ever any tournaments. There isn't a good bar tournament scene either. There is a pool hall called Halligans that has a Sunday night doubles tournament that is fun to play in but not much money. they have a free tournament I believe almost every night. If you win you get a $50 bar tab. there is a guy that makes cue that goes by the name of triple cross cues. I want to say his name is Dick. He uses very exotic woods. As for league they have APA as wekk as BCA and they both do very well. I haven't been there for about a year maybe some of this has changed.

Snookers, near the campus is the place to go. Larry Knox is the owner and one hell of a good guy in my book!!! He is damn good shortstop player with tons of road stories.

And one time way back in the DAY when I was but 20 years old and could truly not spell one pocket I went busted in a Tallahassee poolroom that I couldn't remember the name of with a gun to my head. Good thing I gassed up the car first though cuz that got me halfway home and a pawn shop got me the rest of the way home.

14and1.com

I run the leagues in the Tallahassee area. I am enjoying bringing back the game. I have people asking me what we are playing and I explain and give a copy of the rules to each and every one of them. One of my players reached pro level tonight. That is the skill level for the league not an actual pro playing.

There are some tournaments going on at Snookers. If you want 9-ball action call and ask for Howie. He runs it once a month. I am planning to have a qualifier for the Allen Hopkins Million Dollar 9-ball tournament. More on that later.

The cue makers name is Tom and his work is good. He makes a unique line of cues. No two are alike in that his choice of matierals is vast.

All in all I would say we have some nice rooms and a good amount of quality players in our area.

I played Bank Pool with a businessman in Snooker's some years back. He would not gamble and he banked like God. I think his name was John Amos or something like that. Do you know him? What a banker this guy was. He would be in his 40's now.

What's a good # to reach you at and what is the best time to call? You can PM me or email if you prefer to keep it private.

Tallahassee pool scene

First off, Thanks BigDogatLarge for the plug.

This is a quick note to introduce myself to the forum. I'm Tom from Triple Cross Cues in Tallahassee, Florida. I just registered recently on the forum so you probably haven't heard of me. I've just gone international with an updated website and presence at the Hopkin's Super Billiard's Expo this past March. I'm a member of the International Cue Makers Association since 2004. If you would like to peruse my website, it's at www.triplecrosscues.com Please let me know what you think. It will give many of the particulars that I won't bore you with here. Nice to meet Y'all!!!!!! Remember the peaceful sound of an object ball hitting the bottom of the pocket!!!! Ah that's Pool!!!!

John is still playing there. I have watched him play many times. He makes some really nice shots and is never in a rush. Larry's brother Mike has moved back to Tally town and now we have another good player.

Hey BigDog........When I was traveling through Florida about 8 years ago I hung around Snooker's for about a week and got to be friends with a really nice older gentleman by the name of A.D. Tate - he was a longtime poolroom regular and stakehorse - we took a short road trip together......He was getting up there in age when I met him (70's), and I was wondering if he was still around....do you know ?..........Thanks, Ghost

I was wondering about A.D. just the other day and asked someone back there if they had ran into him at any tournaments. They said not in a couple years at least.

A.D. was an EXTREMELY nice guy and stakehorse. One guy in particular took a little advantage of A.D. and its a shame..... he could have had a deep pocket staker for life. Thats really how I came to be friends with him
as I did not let the bad intentions become a reality.

Tracie (hines) used to be from there as well and she was friends with A.D. and another stakerhorse from there. I think he had something to do with a
TV station or something. He played a little and was much younger than A.D.

First time I saw Larry Knox play I was in against him. I chose this side for a little while and then made a switch to betting on him. He was just getting back into pool and I could see the lights were coming back on.
Over a few month period betting both against him and with him was pretty good to me.
Nice guy and I am glad to hear Snookers is still around.

Anyone know what happened to Joe Steymeyer(?) or his friend John (cant remember his last name but he would be about 40 now and was cleancut with glasses)?

I'll check...

You may be thinking of John Amos. I'll ask him about Joe and see what I come up with. I see Larry all the time, any messages?

John amis or amos does not gamble.... Tracie is in the Spring Hill area now. I also heard a while back that Joe took his own life. I'm not positive about that so I will not say who told me about Joe unless it's confirmed by someone else here. I believe it to be true though as I have not seen or heard about Joe in many years.

Man Josh I hope you are wrong. Joe was a pretty good guy but did have a demon or two. Dont we all. :(

Amos or Amis just doesnt seem right but I could be wrong. The guy I am thinking of used to come to Montgomery Al some to see a relative or daughter. About 5'8 or 5-9 and in pretty good shape. He wore glasses but I remember him playing for small stakes at least.

Anything on A.D. Is he still around?

Well so far it seems nobody has said Joe is still around. I believe the information I had is accurate about him.

I haven't seen Larry or John yet. I asked Mike, but he didn't know anything. Who told you about Joe?
