Tape your chalk

This might seem kind of anal but I hate it when the paper around the chalk gets worn out and funky. I use Scotch clear decorating and repair tape which is like clear electrical tape around the outside of the chalk. The chalk looks like new till your ready to toss it. The tape is the perfect size for the chalk. No trimming. I'm fishing for rep points. Please feel free to lay them on me.

I tape all my chalk also. For some odd reason, when I bought my table 13 years ago, I purchased a gross of Master Chalk. My table set idle for about 10 years and now when I try to use a piece, the paper comes off real easy. The glue has gone bad so I must use tape. I tried the cheap electrical tape, but that didn't work. Duck tape works ok.
 
I tape mine also. Only problem is that as the chalk wears down, the tape needs to be trimmed. When I put the tape on an new cube, I leave about a third of the paper untaped so I don't have to start trimming right away.

I usually lose the chalk before I get to the trimming point
 
Cheapskates! I mean, how much does chalk cost anyway??? I use a pocket chalker...just refill when I don't like the use level, then leave the remains on the table for the poor soul too cheap to buy chalk....:rolleyes:

I've never taped or trimmed chalk in my life. Luckily since the years when I worked at a grocery store for minimum wage, I've been able to afford truckloads of the stuff.

:D Same Here, The only piece of chalk I'm able to hold on to is the one in My chalker, or pieces left at home.

Good ol dad has always liked putting tape around his pieces of chalk. He uses clear sometimes, but uses electrical tape alot also, so He knows It's his chalk, and there is no mistaking It. Needless to say, but He always holds on to chalk alot better then I.;) :) Greg

That was great. I actually laughed out loud!

I tape my chalk when I remember it. My hands sweat a lot, so I have the ability to destroy the paper in about two nights of play, or less! Once it starts to go, it goes quick.
 
I prefer masking tape because it is easiest to tear once the cube needs it. The paper Master puts on its product is more for advertising than utility. Although chalk is cheap, I'm still paying for it and there's nothing wrong with trying to get my monies worth. I try not to be wasteful.

From my avatar, you can see how low I can take a cube of chalk. Actually, those two cubes weren't thrown away at the time I took the picture. They still had a few weeks to go. I finally threw them out when they broke apart.:p

This sounds completely compulsive and anal, and something that I would do on a regular basis.

Good to see other people think like I do.
 
Im curious, how far down do you guys use your chalk? By the time the paper begins to tear Im ready for a new piece anyway. It's cheap and I always have plenty on hand. I just cant see peeling the paper back to have more chalk when you can just use a fresh piece. Seriously? Like half a piece a chalk sometimes? I don't get it.

Exactly, I am with you on this one. When a chalk becomes worn or the paper falls off, I throw it away. I have had a table at home for 20 years and I have gone through a gross box and a half. If I have to spend a whole $25-30 on chalk every 5-10 years, it isn't that big of a deal. It isn't worth the wasted time to maintain the chalk. Throw it away a grab a new one!
 
Well...back in the day I use to sack groceries, I would wear the chalk half way down and then take a hacksaw to it and cut it in half. Now I wil either give to somebody or leave it at the bar I shoot league out of because they buy that cheap chalk.

It might be a bit much, but I usually keep around 5 or 6 pieces on my personal table at one given time.

It's obvious that the majority of posters have not yet discovered Sang Lee chalk. It is the most unbelieveable chalk I have ever used; it is fabulously consistent, covers uniformly and holds incredibly. It is definitely superior to the Master blue chalk. Only problem is; it is $4 PER CUBE.....crazy.

I received some free samples; so I use a chalk holder and cut down the chalk and paper periodically, using coins in the bottom of the chalk holder to raise the level of the chalk.

P.S. - When I used to use Master blue; I too just threw the cube away if it got a little worn.

I only like the top 1/3 of the chalk. Occasionally, I will tilt a 1/2 used piece to brush with the inside side of the chalk. But, I do not like to have to clean my ferrule off from using worn chalk. I guess if you don't care if your ferrule is clean and white, it wouldn't matter.

Besides, chalk that is worn down does not get the outer top edges of a tip covered properly (will miss spots or clump), and can be the cause of a miscue.

Master Blue averages a .25 per piece, or $3.00 a box (12 pcs).
