I just bought a new taper shaper at VALLEY FORGE from UNIQUE PRODUCTS. I have been looking for a ryobi laminate trimmer model tr-31-1since they have been discontinued .I have also heard the new rigid works well, and have been looking at the grizzly model also. I just cant justify 450.00 for the KRESS router. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated.
THANK YOU

I highly recommend the Rigid laminate trimmer. I recently bought one as a temporary fix when I had 2 precision spindles go down in a weeks time. I bought the Rigid to use until I got my other spindles repaired, but my other spindle has been back for a couple of weeks and it's been sitting on a shelf, because I actually like the Rigid MUCH better. I may be lucky, but there is no measurable run-out with the spindle and it's the quietest spindle or router I've ever used! I purchased a high precision collet for it from Think & Tinker which is great. I use 1/64" end mills for pocketing with no problems whatsoever. AND the Rigid has a "LIFETIME GUARANTEE" which is pretty tough to beat! Oh, and BTW, over the last 18 years I've had my CNC I've used a lot of different spindles and routers on it. The Ryobi was about the worse one I tried. It was the loudest, by far and the run-out was pretty bad. The Porter Cable were marginally better, but still no prize. The Rigid, which I believe is made by Bosch, really impressed me with the quality, features and accuracy.

rigid router

I second the recommendation of the Rigid router. It's quiet, powerful, has variable speed and a headlight too. Durability? Only time will tell; so far, so good.

rigid router

Thank you for such a quick response, what i really need to know do I need a special collet for this router?Or does it just marry up

Got a question on the ridgit. I have the collet that a friend of mine was kind enough to do it for me, but in order for the router fit I had remove the screw that adjusts the height of the router.
Do you guys had to do the same thing? Would it be possible to post pictures of the actual router like you have it in the taper shaper? I know that prevous model was all round but that screw really screws things up.
Any advice would be appreciated. I also love the router!!! Super smooth and quiet.

router mount

To mount the Rigid router on the Taper Shaper, I made an adaptor ring out of some 1" thick phenolic I had around (aluminum or wood would also work) with a notch for height adjuster. You end up with a two piece adaptor ring but that's OK- it works fine.

The older ones had a different design, which is what the collet I sent Tony was designed for....

I wasn't aware until today they had changed it..

I built a hydraulic suspension and vicinity sensor on mine.

I need to know which rigid model is needed,r2400,or r2401.also think and tinker sells the collet, which model for which collet?
Thanks

Rigid router

The 2401 is their new model with a height adjuster(which is in the way, for our purposes); It's got more features, like a headlight, variable speed and a nicer switch. The older model, 2400, is somewhat easier to mount, but it's no big deal...I'd get the 2401....I did. I love it.

I noticed that you said that you used the ryobi router, which model was it? The reason that I ask is because you said you purchased a high precision collet @think and tinker and I just wanted to know which router and collet your using on your taper shaper
THANKS

Bill,
I don't have a "Taper Shaper", I use a Techno Isel 4 axis CNC gantry system. I haven't used a Ryobi in years, they didn't last too long and drove me nuts with the noise. I've used at least a dozen different spindles/routers on my system over the last 18 years from the Ryobi up to a $3000 Precise jig Grinder and many in between. As I said in my previous post I bought the Rigid (2401) as a temporary measure while I was waiting to get my Wolfgang Spindles to get back from getting repaired, but I found I liked the Rigid better than all of the other spindles/routers I've previously used, so I left it on even after the Wolfgang Spindle came back. The Rigid uses the same collet that the Bosch uses from Think & tinker, but if you're just using 1/4" shaft router bits I don't think you'll even need one. I wanted one to use with the 1/8" shanks on the small micrograined end mills instead of using a split bushing.

Think & Tinker precision collets

I just received the Think & Tinker precision collet set for my Rigid 2401 router. I got the set that includes 1/8" and 1/4" collets, the matching nut, a wrench, a precision calibration rod, collet cleaning solution and even cue tips to do the cleaning with.
The collets are great. You don't need a test indicator to observe the improvement; I suppose eventually I'll get around to checking but you can hear and feel it at once. Noise and vibration on my 6 wing cutter are greatly reduced. This thing is smoooth!
If you use one of these routers, you might like these collets.

Does anyone mind posting a picture of their set up on a Taper Shaper with the Ridgid 2401 Unit. I have a Taper Shaper with the quiet router and I feel like I am waiting for days to turn down any significant stock of wood.
Thanks
