Taper shaper

Ok.
I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a taper shaper.
What does everyone have to say about them?
I notice that they sell very fast on the used market.......
Any tips or tricks? Should I opt for the quiet router? Any spare parts or upgrades to get right away?
Just looking for some input before I go ahead and order one.
Thanks

Everybody loves them and they are a work horse. Build an enclosure and save a grand on buying a quiet router IMO. If you get one new ask Jim about working with him on a QR later if you find the noise is just too much. Maybe a belt or 2 and some of those do dads to reset the taper bar. It arrives rdy to work.

Thanks Randy
I think I remember something from the bar ringer DVDs about the taper bar not being good?
Noise is an issue, so if it is much quieter I would pop for the K and get the quiet router.

It is a work horse. I use a ridge router, and just replace bearings. Once you build yourself a enclosure the noise isn't bad.The dust will also be contained. check out my profile pics and you see how i built mine.

I use the Rigid router as well. It is noticeably quieter than the PC and the Dewalt. The Bosch is a bit quieter. I own all those so.....

I still say go laminate router and enclosure(you WILL want an enclosure anyway) then, if that still doesn't work for you, buy a QR. My enclosure is nearly done and I'll post pics as well.

The problem with the taper bar is that the profile is not adjustable. You use the profile Unique gives you and can only adjust tip and joint end. They do have an adjustable bar though. If you are fine with a straight butt taper and their profile there is nothing to fret over.

Barringer had nothing bad to say about the taper bar, only that he modified it a bit for his specific liking...

I have used my TS for years

And own the QR. I would not even consider a different router, unless I had a big shop that allowed me to not work close to the TS while the machine is working. If you put other routers on it, and have a plexiglass panel on the front of the enclosure, it is too loud for my already compromised hearing. While using the variable speed QR, dialed down to the speed necessary to cut shafts with a six wing cutter, I do not need to use my hearing protection in my small room (about 10X15 feet) that houses my TS, Cuemonster, and Deluxe. I can work on my Deluxe while tapering on the TS and not feel like I am at a rock concert. I know that when I run my PC router on my metal lathe in my other room in my shop, I HAVE to wear hearing protection, no question about it. It has no enclosure and really does scream while cutting.
I made my own adjustable taper bar for my TS. I used a piece of scrap metal as the base and took the delrin rub bar off my deluxe, and mounted it on that base. One can just make that rub bar of course, it is rather simple. I can send a pic or two if need be. I also pinned the right side of the bar, using a roll pin. That is more accurate than the sloppy bolt that is used to hold bars in place on the TS. I found the arrangement much more repeatable than the Unique factory set up.
I never liked using the deluxe to taper, it made a mess, and is best used as a repair lathe for my work flow, in my shop. I love my Deluxe as a repair and cuemaking lathe, not as a one machine does all ! Not looking to anger the Deluxe users out there. I love mine too ! Especially now that I installed a commercial DC motor and control on the Deluxe, WOW, what a machine it is now ! I will start a thread and show some pictures of that set up when I have the spare time.

I have a deluxe and I love it too,
I also have a midsize and its good for smaller stuff, just getting into more building as opposed to repairs....

I pulled both of my lathes off of chris's boxes, so I dont have the taper bar attached anymore,

I only used it a couple times and I didnt really like setting up the router and power feed etc

I think the taper shaper looks like a great stand alone machine, albeit a little expensive

Switch to the Rigid, it is MUCH quieter.

TS is probably the best manual router taper machine available now b/c the best ever is no longer made.:D

I pulled the trigger and ordered a taper shaper along with the quiet router.
Should get it in a month or so and will let you know if the quiet router is quiet :)
