TAR 29 Feedback: Shotclock

Wow, a very pleasurable viewing experience watching the accustats 8 ball, and then the TAR match with a shot clock.

Now, I'm watching Putnam mosey around the table on the Turning Stone hot seat match, taking TONS of time each and every shot. Are you kidding me? Shot clock forever! Gambling, tournament, or exhibition match!

Wow, I just tuned in and noticed that immediately.

And the racking....wow....

I didn't see this so presume you meant racking took ages, like it does for everyone. Taking an hour to rack the balls EVERY SINGLE TIME is possibly the most tedious thing in sport today.

I say there should be no more than one minute between the 9 being sunk and the 1 ball being struck on the next break shot.

This game speeds up or it dies.

I didn't watch the Turning Stone, but I think some players have used the racking as a shark. They make their opponent re-rack and re-rack over and over and over again. Eventually, it gets under their opponent's skin and creates a little edge.

I'd name names who are the most famous for doing this, but I don't need to. The players who know these culprits are. Some of them are high-profile, so-called American pool stars. But because they are pool stars, they're allowed to get away with this nonsensical behavior.

To illustrate one example that I personally experienced at Turning Stone between Johnny Archer and Keith, well, Johnny made Keith re-rack the rack at least a dozen times. Each time Keith asked Johnny to check it out, and each time Johnny said it wasn't good. The referee, Dana Bufalo, was called over. Keith asked Dana to rack. Johnny didn't like Dana's rack, either, and complained. This went on for at least 10 or 15 minutes before the game. If you don't think that's going to get in somebody's head, you're wrong. Johnny thereafter cursed at Keith, using real curse words. I will never forget it. The spectators sitting ringside heard it, as did I.

After the match, which Johnny won, Johnny and Keith had a heated discussion, with Keith accusing Johnny of an intentional shark. I stepped in to intervene to remove Keith from the room and try to cool things down. My emotions got the best of me, and I began to cry. Johnny was very polite and spoke to me very nicely. Tony Crosby was there and saw it unfold.

The head games that happen at these tournaments, especially between players who know each other, well, they know what buttons to push.

Shawn Putnam is a slow player, as is Ralf Souquet, Nick Varner, Reed Pierce, Johnny Archer, Danny Basovich, et cetera. What's interesting is that when these champions are on a shot clock, they shoot just as good as they do when they're not on the shot clock. Go figure! :p
