TAR 35 Orcollo vs Van Boening June 7-9, 2013

Orcollo vs. Van Boening • 10 Ball

Nothing but TEN BALL? hmmmm.

Might be a nice tune-up for THE ULTIMATE 10 BALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

I'm guessing the match will take about fifteen hours to play. So the loser makes $100 an hour and the winner makes $233 an hour. Plus their hotel for a weekend in Vegas is paid for. If thats low please show me who is paying more.

This match will put us at $32,000 paid out in 2013 and its only half over. Add in the hotel costs and it goes up another $3000 or so. Plus we actually pay what we say we pay unlike some of the "challenge matches" who claim a big number and pay something totally different.

Since I have been doing this there was exactly one match where TAR made as much as the winner of the match. In six years. So while this proves I am an idiot it also proves there just isnt that much money to be made in one on one matches. The reason TAR is still doing these is because we do not over promise on money then go in the tank and disappear. If players think its too little all they have to do is say "No" when I call.

Edit: Another way to look at it is the loser makes $500 a day and the winner makes $1166. Thats a decent day rate for any profession. I certainly would like opportunities to make it.

Right on, Justin. The payout system is fine, and with the money pool players are making (or not making) these days, I think anyone would be foolish to turn down an invite.

Shit, if you want. I'll come on TAR and give Shane the 7 if I was guaranteed $1,500. Totally worth the embarrassment.

Justin, I just want to say thanks for the great matches you put up! I hope some day, some way you will be able to make a decent profit from this truly extraordinary endeavor with tar!!!! It really deserves so much more!!! But pool is just tough action!!!! Again thank you so much for all the great matches!!! And mean ALL!!!!!

I guess some people are just clueless...heh. Thanks for getting this match together Justin! Can't wait

Well this should be a great match especially since there are two vocal camps about who the best player in the world is. Hopefully this will be match number two where you make as much or more than the winner. I have to believe lots of people will be tuning in to see how this goes down.

Justin, WOW another great match!

I'm trying 2 twist my friends arm to come down for another great
weekend!

Thanks 4 all the great matches U have been able to stream for all of
us pocket billiard fans.

When Dennis wins, who will Shane be playing then is the question. Or will Dennis stay on and play someone else?

Way to go

That should be some good pool to watch. Some day when I vacation away from Alaska I will watch one of your great matches. Thanks for doing the matches. I don't know who will win or how they matched up before. I would bet on Shane if it was a 10" Diamond.

TAR 35: Dennis Orcollo vs Shane Van Boening:

snip.....
The prize fund is $5000 with the winner receiving $3500 and the loser $1500. snip....

Would it be possible to give subscribers the option to tip the players? Say if we wanted to throw an extra $20 to the winner? Or even just add it to the prize fund.

I don't know who will play who next. It all comes down to availability. Dennis only comes to the US a few times a year. Same with most Pinoys. If Shane loses and another interesting match comes up he might play again. If Frost, Efren or Alex says they want to play Shane a One Pocket match should I turn it down if he loses10 Ball to Dennis?

Dennis goes back home after TAR 35. Should I wait till he can come back to do another match if he wins?

This stuff really isn't that hard to figure out.

If there was a way I didn't have to pay taxes on it I might be fine with that. We use paypal for everything. This means we get a statement for all transactions with them and a number at the end of the year that gets put in our taxes. I dont have time to keep track of what is donations and what is PPV payments in the same account. Think of going through hundreds of transactions, picking out the donations, figuring what the tax on that would be, keeping that and paying out the rest.

Just eat the tax maybe ? If ten people give $20 a match and we do ten matches a year thats $2000. So for each player in a match to get $100 extra I would have to pay taxes on the full $2000. Every April I bend over and take it deep from Uncle Sugar. I have no desire to make it any worse than it already is.

I am not a fan of donations for professionals. When we first started TAR I had a donate button on our website but never felt good about it. It has been gone for years now. My outlook is that its my job to produce a product that people want to buy. If I succeed I make an honest profit. If not then I didnt do my job and should not ask for charity.

Over the years I have had people offer things to help like Jack Justice giving us a case and many cuemakers giving cues (only one of many reasons I like cuemakers as a group so much). All of those things were awesome but IMO different than just asking people to give money.

IMO the players are paid fair compensation for the time they spend at TAR. My goal is to increase that pay because if they make more it means I make more. TAR is very symbiotic with the players. If we do better they do better. Over the years what we pay has steadily increased. We make money we do more events. More events means more paydays for them. If we can pay $10,000 instead of $5,000 that means we have more flexibility in scheduling. I would love to pay a bunch of money each event. Right now we honestly pay out a higher percentage of revenue than we should but it is what it is. Hopefully we can grow things and everyone does better.

I know you didnt ask for a manifesto on this subject but it has come up in the past and these are my thoughts on the issue.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for the kind words and support. This is a match I have wanted to see for a long time. Lately we have had several of those so its an exciting time for me personally as a pool fan. The only reason any of these have been possible is the support from all the people here. If people didnt pay good money for these matches I wouldn't have the opportunity to keep trying to put them on.

The players who play on TAR deserve some thanks as well. These guys put themselves out there for not a huge amount of money (but a fair payday IMO) and they know when they play on TAR people who know whats going on in pool are paying attention. The whole thing about TAR for me is the community dynamic of the players, fans and company. It's a pretty cool thing IMO. Thanks to all of you who make it possible.

Is Dennis coming back in July for the Vegas events (10 ball, 1 pocket, 8 ball, etc)?
