Tascarella or Scruggs

i'd go for a tascarella. what I've seen are just superb. like the Scruggs I've shot with but i'd pick tasc.

This is a good discussion. Does anybody have an opinion as to what other cues a Tascarella plays like...comparable to what? assuming a stainless steal joint, ivory ferule.

I haven't read all the posts
forgive me
I own both Scruggs (several) AND tasc
truthfully the Scruggs plays better and feels better in my hand

I'd have to go with the steel jointed Tasc. It just has that old school, super solid hit. Much better investment too...............take a Scruggs and Tasc with similar options and the Tasc is just worth more money.

Hi Larry,
When I come down, I will bring a Tascarella that JimmyRayK knows well and change your mind:)

I also have a very old Skruggs titlist conversion that is incredible ,but it is 57.5, and before he put TS in the butt cap so I cannot prove Tim made it. I always meant to send it for verification but never got around to it.

All the best,
phil

Scruggs.

I do want to own a Tascarella, played with my buddy's Tasc, hit really nice. But I'm a little biased, as my regular player is a four ebony point Scruggs, it's just the best hitting cue I've owned, period. Tim was known for the hit of his cues.

After I switched to a Lambros with the Ultra-Joint, I'd have a hard time switching to either of these makers. That UJ is the sh$t man.

I haven't gotten to the end of this thread yet, but for what it's worth. I've owned a Scruggs sneaky and have played with one Tasc. I preferred the Scruggs sneaky for hit and playability. The shaft taper was perfect for my hands, but I had some bones to pick about ferrule material... Overall, that was my preference from playing with both. Keep in mind that was a very small sample, and I'm sure if i had the chance to try out a few more cues from each maker, it might change my mind.

Here are my thoughts as objectively as possible in terms of craftsman ship, lineage, etc:
-Tasc does Full Splice cues.
-Tim didn't.
-Tasc has the obvious lineage that connects his work to a great blank maker GB. On top of which he added some neat joint innovations throughout the years.
-Tim has ventured out into different designs over the years.
-Tasc has pretty much stayed within his wheelhouse for the longest time (so does SW, doesn't mean it's a bad thing).

I'm sure more will come out with interesting facts for us to compare the two. Depending on whether you care about the cue's collectibility, it will affect your decision to get one or the other... If you have the cash, just get one of each!!

The shaft taper on Tasc is really stiff.
Scruggs' taper is closer to the "pro-taper" that it is known today.
Your choice.

Wow looks like Old Pete has some fans! I clearly thought Scruggs fans would dominate!

Why would you think that?

And it's not "Old Pete;" it's "the Petes." Pete Jr. is pretty young.

I love Timmy's work, but if I could only have one, Tascarella is the easy choice for me.

The "other" craftsmanship thought or should I say "fact" is that when speaking about the actual "craftsmanship" of the the two makers in general, Pete has ALWAYS built a better cue than Timmy and did so in all aspects including prong quality, shaft work, wrap work, and finishing work. Pete's talent for his attention to detail to what you can see only backs up the rest you can't. As far as playability I guess you can make a comparison but any of Timmys cue's I've ever owned didn't hit as well as the cues I've owned of Pete's. In general Tascarella's are just a better cue.

Scruggs is my choice, for about 30 years now.

Did GB make blanks?

Serious question, as I thought he got blanks from Titleist, Burton Spain and then Gus Szamboti.

Yep, George didn't make his prong blanks... He used Brunswick, Burton Spain, Gus Szamboti, and I believe a few John Davis blanks...

I missed that... I need to read the whole post next time..:o

Thanks for your correction! I didn't catch that I wrote that. Been reading Spain's book on making blanks, so I wrote "Blank maker" instead of "Cue maker". I can go back and edit it.

Scruggs vs Tascarella (what a freakin' thread)
choosing for resale will depend upon price and choosing for personal use will depend on cue itself.
investment quality is good either way, tascarella might have an edge "long term"

Yes to all, including John Davis when he worked for Burton and John Davis when Burton got out the first time.
