Team 9 ball at Amsterdam Billiards NYC

Hello all, just wanted to know your thoughts about team 9 ball and what has this league done for your game. Also what team or player do you dread to play.

Personally my team has yet to make the playoffs although we came pretty close last season. On the otherhand my game has jumped up half a speed from a C player to a solid C+ within 2 seasons. I know it's nothing to be bragging about but for me I'm finally seeing some results in my game and I hope one day to reach the Open class level.

Even though this league is pretty expensive ( $ 16.00 a match ) not including registration fee but where else can I play pros like Tony Robles, Mika Immonen and the handful of strong Open class players for $16 bucks.

Now for the fun part of this thread, In terms of what team we dreaded most in our division had to be "Tony's little angels". This team was very consistent overall and very difficult to match up against. Tony Robles is pretty much a lock win for them regardless of the outrageous spot he had to dish out. Only once did I see Tony lose and that was to an Open player ( forgot his name ) but I was very impressed by this young man's determination and skills.

Another team that comes to mind is '' Sucios '' this team was in first place the whole season and won the whole thing. They also won the previous season, very strong considering they only have 4 players.Very impressive.

Also '' Horse with no name '' I've heard much about this veteran team and considering they were dead last at one point and ended up making the playoffs and finishing in 3rd place. In my opinion they showed a lot of heart and charactor.

Now the player I dread the most to play against is obv Tony Robles. We pretty much just throw out the sacrificial lamb to him which was me of course and I got my ass handed to me But I've learned so much and look foward to playing him again.

So what team or player do you dread to play in our league?

hehehe ... TR's on my team this season ... <evil laugh> :p

WTF 4 Life! :) :D

Which team are you?

And yes, I truly believe team 9-ball had a HUGE impact on my game. It forces you to play stronger. Any competition, be it Team 9-ball, Tournaments, etc that make you elevate your game or else fail miserably will automatically improve one's game.

I find that I've reached a certain point with team 9-ball, like a plateau of learning. I play in the Predator events and compete against people like Tony and Mika and other strong A's and Opens and have seen a huge improvement in my game.

Good Thread Mr. Jorden!

Oh the other teams ... I don't fear NOBODY YO!! jk, Sucios is Very Strong, as is Horse with No Name. MBN beat us in the finals last season so they are no slouch. Ruder Still is tough, but we always have fun drinking with them after the fireworks. Spidey's Arsenal is the NEW tough team to beat. They are some monsters.

I also play in the Amsterdam Team 9-ball league and there isn't a team or player I dread coming up against. Even though I'm only a C player, whenever I get matched up against a much better player, I always go into the match hoping to learn something. If you join this league you're bound to end up playing a name that evokes fear and dread - Tony, Mika, Steve and Gina Lipsky, Jen Baretta, Liz Ford, Caroline Pao just to name a few. You can't let initimdation get the better of you in this league. Have fun, play your heart out and if you're lucky like I was, you get to play Mika and learn one of the most incredible safes I've ever seen. There have been several occasions where an opponent made a shot in a way I never would have thought of and they were gracious enough to show it to me after the match. This league is uber competitve, but it definitely will improve your game if you let it.

How does this league work? Do you sign up with a full team or are you placed on a random team?

Both. Most of the time a team will add a "new" player to the roster. But people also ask John to place them on a team and he can normally do it.

Another Team to fear

My Jordan,

Anther team you may want to watch out for is Duck My Kick (formerly known as Kneel Before Zod).

Chris Lynch, AZ's own Jude Rosenstock, and other great players make this a strong team.

And just because I am on this team does not make me in the least biased...

As one of the Founding Members of WTF, I say that's the team to watch out for. And now with the addition of Tony Robles, they probably won't feel the effects of my leaving them anymore:D :D just kidding, love you guys!

Wow, sounds like a very competitive league.

To get pro players in it. Wow, what is the reward at the end. Does the winning team get money or a spot in vegas?? Sounds very interesting to me. My womens masters team played the girls from NY (Liz Ford was on the team) Do those same girls play together in that league?? Very strong team BTW. Very nice competitive girls. We had fun!!!
Both our teams played well. It went hill/hill and we won. It could of went either way. What a great experience!!!!

Yes, every girl from that team plays in this league.

Winning team gets around $2,500 to split amongst the team and plane tickets to Vegas for the BCA.

Well no wonder all those girls play jam up!!!!
I wish we had a league similiar here in Wa. State!!!!
What a great incentive!!!!!
And on top of it, you get to play pro level players.
What a wonderful learning experience!!!!

The Sucios live on! They've been teaming it up since the Corner days. And I've said it before and I'll say it again, if the acronym for WTF is what I think it is, then I can't help but root for the team!

Wendy<---a mouth like a sailor on a good day and like a trucker on a bad day. :o

I like playing in the league, because it gets me away from the crazies at Broadway Billiards. Then again, there seem to be more crazies at ABC but at least they're new to me.

What I like is that it has gotten me away from playing the same people over and over. I don't know the guys at ABC so it's always a new face/game/strategy for me. Playing only a single match a night also puts a different sort of focus/pressure on my game. When playing cheap sets, it's easy to throw away a set or two knowing you can always win the next set. But when all you have to show for the week is a single win or loss, it puts a lot more importance on every game with your teammates watching.

I've only played a dozen times or so, but I had a hell of a time with a D+ named Steve Root. I swear, this guy just did not give up. A few times if I broke and scratched, or left an open table he actually ran out... a D+! The match went hill-hill, and must have taken 90+ minutes because he takes so much time to focus and prepare for the shot. I was hoping that during the course of the match he'd just give up and let me win, but he stuck with it and made me earn the hill-hill game. Exhausting!

FREE?? can i have 2?

I don't play in the team 9ball league there right now, but back when I did it definitely helped my game. It's hard to consistently find that level of quality competition elsewhere.

I play Tuesdays in the 8-ball league (beginner/intermediate). Does that still count? :-)

you're kidding right? all that got is mika. their lineup is hack, hack, hack, mika, hack, hack, capao (who's only slightly better than a hack).

if spidey's arse.nal didn't have incriminating evidence that could get mika thrown in guantanamo bay they would've never been able to pry him away from olga's team.

and capao's only on the team 'cause they pulled the asian card on her.

tough team. what a laugh. i'd be surprise if they finish over .500.

Those hacks are just lucky. Those pocket porn stars...gotta look out for them and that 0.003 lead they've got. I mean a 0.003 lead! That's huge! They are clearly the league favorites.
