OK, so it was time for a new desktop tower and I wanted at least close to state of the art stuff for home use, mainly just internet and email. I said I wanted to be able to get really good live streams and video. I had a tower built and picked it up this afternoon. It has Intel dual core 45nm, 2.8 GHz processor with Windows 7, Asus motherboard, and EVGA GeForce 8400GS 512MB video card and I downloaded the latest edition of Adobe Flash Player. The shop I got it at won't open again until Monday. Bottom line is that live stream and video sucks... it's very, very choppy and I'm disappointed as hell. Where did I go wrong and what is the hot setup? Thanks for advise and suggestions.

How is your internet connection?

I have Comcast High Speed, and it varies from minute to minute, day to day. I'm sure that may have something to do with it. Thanks...

I have roadrunner & the streams also vary. The recent Big Truck from Atlanta was the worst I've seen. Might have been a UStream issue. Anybody know?

Ustream

I hope you are not basing your new system on the broadcast over Ustream this weekend. I tried several channels yesterday and had problems on all of them. I suggest downloading a few movies or games and trying it out with that to make sure it was ustream and not your new PC.

Downloading a few movies as you suggested Klink will not allow you to test the streaming capability.

Watching a movie online on the other hand will.

The biggest problem faced when watching back live streams or recorded video streams is the speed of your Internet connection. You can test this at www.speedtest.net and clicking on the Orange Pyramid.

When watching back a stream you want the download speed to be as high as possible. What speedtest give you is an indication of your speed at that time, or your maximum speed at that time.

If you have anything running in the background like anti-virus, software updates etc... this will eat into the bandwidth that is available for streaming.

The next thing is the speed at which the video or stream is encoded. Over here our live streams vary between 256k up to around 2meg - the majority at the lower end in fairness!

In respect of our video on demand content we encode this at a dual bitrate of 1500k and 600k respectively.

Have a look a the video in my signature this is dual bitrate encoded and may give you an indication as to whether it is system problem or something else.

Thanks for the input, guys. CueSport...I tried to watch the video in your signature and it reloads like every 10 seconds. So what does that mean? I understand that the Atlanta Show had US Stream issues and have pm'd Big Truck about it...he's very cool. I'll try downloading a movie and see what that does. Thanks again....

I do.

It WAS Ustream capping our bandwidth. We were experimenting with some higher quality setting but continued to bottle neck at Ustream. The first day was better than the second. The second day we lowered the setting way down and the stream smoothed out towards the finals.

I was limited to when I could make adjustments due to the live recording in progress prior to streaming.

We are looking at some alternate streaming sites that can do high quality streaming and still allow us to use it for free. I had the upload to stream in HD from Atlanta, but never got close using the free service of Ustream.

Currently if we do stream in HD it will have to be PPV. I think the lower quality stream for free will suffice. We are still recording in HD and HD DVD's are available.

Thanks,

Ray

Here's one to try Ray: http://www.livestream.com/

Sorry if this is old info.

All the best,

Marcus,

How are you? Haven't heard from you in a while. I hope everything is going well.

Using the viewer info from the Atlanta show, bandwith with Livestream would run approx $500 for the weekend with the exact number of viewer hours that we had. With everything running smooth in HD, I'm sure the viewer hours would have been higher.

This is not in the budget for a free stream for me. The bandwidth charges could easily top $1,500 for one tournament. With PPV, the bandwidth coincides with the viewer count making it feasible.

Bottom line is......you can only get so much before you must charge or have a sponsor to make it possible.

Two problems with watching our videos, one internet connection speed is not sufficient to view them and secondly our servers are UK based so that could also cause problems.

Things are good. I still intend on getting Robley a table or at least finance some of his table time. Hang in there with getting a sponsor. I would recommend contacting Tom Russell at pool player tournament systems. He has a network that might be able to help you.

Well, I'm convinced now that my hardware is good and it's just a matter of individual streams and videos and connection speeds. Thanks for the input everybody, and big thanks for all the streamers doing such good things for pool and pool nuts like me! Keep up the good work!
:p
