Tell Me More About the Hillbilly

The Big Apple Nine Ball Challenge is over, and I think I've become a Charlie " Hillbilly" Bryant fan. Actually, I know I've become a Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant fan.

Hillbilly is really fun to watch. He plays with a good pace and rhythm, he is animated, he talks to the crowd, and he nearly always looks like he's having a good time. It can only be good for pool if the Hillbilly becomes one of the game's most elite players, a possibility that has to be considered by anyone who has seen his powerful game.

The Hillbilly is very personable, too. I had an opportunity to talk with him just after his loss to Archer on Saturday, and he was composed and still enthusiastic. His "very-clearly-non-New-York-City-style" comment to me was "I'm still in it if the gods are willing and the creek don't rise." As there aren't many creeks in Manhattan, which is where I live, I wondered what the second part of that meant, and asked him. He said it meant that if the creek rises, there's always a flood. Guess I should have known!

He's very comfortable with who he is, seems to really enjoy interacting with the fans of the game, has a great attitude about competition, and has enormous respect for the superstars of the game.

I'm sure many of you on the forum know the Hillbilly, and if you would oblige me, I'd love to learn more about him.

He almost lost his composure twice during the match with Archer, but settled down. But I think alittle animation is good, it kind of keeps you more attentive to the match, and man can he break them balls.

You NY city boys need to get out more. "Good Lord willin' and the creeks don't rise", i hear it (and say it) all the time, but i'm just some hick from NC...

Thanks,

Jon

P.S. I'll try to be at the Carolinas Open, if the good Lord's willin' and the creeks don't rise. (there are at least three or four creeks around my place :D .)

I was admiring his break last week in Tampa and he took the time to teach me where he was aiming the cueball and how to use his break. Too bad I no longer play nineball.. imo

be at the open in Goldsboro regardless of the creek.. I'll be the one pitching a fit and asking for all the weight.

I think im a fan too- I saw him play last year or maybe it was this year at the DCC against Jeanette Lee. He was super polite, doing the old country boy thing. He may be able to make that work real well for himself.I had a discussion with someone on him and we both felt the nickname will help his career as long as he remains the decent individual he seems to be. It didnt hurt Kid Delicious for sure. They announced at the BAC that he is coming out with a line of cues in 6 months.

I listened to The Hillbilly doing commentary for the Big Apple Classic and enjoyed it although my connection was real bad til the last 3 games of the finals. Anyway i managed to hear that he had once finished second to Tony Ellin in a fairly big event. At least i think it was fairly big. That had to be quite a while back.I didnt know he had been a tournament player all that long or maybe i just missed his name in the results column. I seem to remember him being referred to as Shannon Bryant also. Did he go by that name too or is that my faulty memory?

Years ago in the South your home would often have a creek running thru the front yard, if you built it at the base of a hill. Your driveway would go thru the creek if you could not afford to build a bridge. So when the creek rises you ain't goin' nowhere.

I also watched Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant beat Jeanette Lee at the DCC. He made some wisecracks that were pretty funny. Like "Cain't a hillbilly git a roll"

When he was on his last 9-ball, a difficult but very makeable cut shot, he laid his cue on the table and took a bathroom break. Jeanette says "Oh come on let's get this over with".

He came back 5 minutes later and nailed the shot. I don't what he was trying to do. Perhaps payback for her slow play in the banks division she played in.

I didnt watch the whole match with Hillbilly vs Lee so i missed the break thing but i did detect some tension between them.

Charlie is a really cool guy. I met him many years ago at a McDermott Tour tournament. He is always polite and stops to talk to me. He's a great player so it's really cool that he remembers me and stops to chat. I also think he is good for the game. He is always entertaining and is definitely proof that playing pool is fun.

Just my opinion. Take care.

Interesting- The original meaning is slowly being lost and another one is taking its place. This happens more than you might think though all examples are currently escaping me.

I took lessons from charlie about 2 years ago, and let me tell you, this guy is world class. He can move whitey like there aint no tomorrow. He plays at legends in league city, along with dennis strickland and them. If you want his number, pm me and ill give it to you.

Hillbilly plays mostly out of the hall that I frequent (when he is in town here in Houston). The guy is great for the game of pool due to his LOVE of the game. I really hope he makes it big because he is a really humble sort (not usually the mold for a good player), and has a great sense of humor. I have never seen him hustle or try and take advantage of anyone since he started coming to the hall a few years ago. He is more of the type that will help a lesser player improve his game with a few simple pointers (free of charge).
Not only is Charlie a good player, but he is also a VERY good teacher. I have taken a couple of lessons from him and it has helped my game in a huge way. The things that helped me most were not the "big" things, but were more of very subtle things he pointed out to me.
There are very few people that frequent the hall that I would ask over to my home, but Hillbilly would be welcome any time (not because he is a good player, but because he truly is a good human being).

As we speak, Hillbilly is in Baton Rouge,LA. playing in the Red Stick Classic. That's a $15,000 ($7,500 for 1st) tournament being played on 3 1/2' X 7' bartables. Close to 40 players showed up, including an international cast. Hillbilly has a very good chance of snapping it off.... imo (too bad I'm stuck in Tampa)
