Ten Ball Rules

Am I correct that, at least in the Predator event, making the 10 on the break spots but ONLY if it's made in one of the foot corners and is a win if it drops up table??

Weird rule IMHO. Like 9 Ball, the 10 only goes if the rack isn't tight or if it's kicked...so essentially by luck.

So, what is the difference if the cheese lucks into the foot corners or lucks in up table???

There is SO much complaining about the luck factor in 9 Ball with 10 Ball supposedly being the answer, it seems odd that a pure luck shot would be allowed.

Personally, I wish that almost ALL luck was removed from any pool game.

The games ought to be played with called balls/pockets with slopped in balls staying down but ending the inning if the called shot is missed.

And the cheese ball gets spotted if made on the break in any pocket...both games.

And one of the commentators made a very interesting suggestion.

If the called shot is MISSED and the shooter ends up with a lucky hook, the opposing player can make the shooter shoot again!!!

I LIKE that!

Md state 9 ball tourney used this rule. The guy's that play 10 ball in the pool hall here in DE play that foot pocket rule.

I wouldn't want to play the shoot again rule. If I miss and leave you hooked that's just the way things rolled. I might have made the shot and left myself hooked. Maybe I knew I'd get hooked and called the shot to deliberately miss, hooking you. Sneaky? Yes, but a viable strategy. Defense is an essential component of the game whether it is overt (called) or covert (deliberate miss) and I enjoy the challenge of a great safety.

That is just plain wrong. What if it was a 3-way shot? Shoot while preparing for the next ball, but if the shooter misses, his opponent would end up being snookered. You can't penalize smart play...

as regarding the ten on the break, the simplest and fairest thing to do is say that the ten counts if it's kicked in. If it goes directly into the pocket then it's spotted.

I tend to agree with you, Jim. However, there is a problem if you make rotation games a call shot game.

The wonderful strategy in 8-ball of calling a safety but still pocketing your own ball has wonderful strategic implications and continues to make the game wonderful. However,I think that playing a safety in 9-ball or 10-ball while pocketing the object ball is entirely too easy for top level play making the game something too different. The control of both balls is in safety play 9-ball is an art form. Having to only control one ball, IMO would just be to much of a change. Is that enough of a downside?

I however think that calling the game ball is the way to go. What do you think about just having to call the game ball? And then that means leaving Rotation as is (slop away).

I think that some of the greatest shots ever made have come from the fact that one player is lucky and the other is unlucky.

For example, the famous Efren Z kick against Earl in the Reno Open. You
could consider that Earl was lucky that Efren played safe, and it ended up back firing on him. Then obviously we know what happens from there.

I dont think making the 10 on the break is all luck because hitting the balls square and extremely hard like svb is one of the reasons the 10 has a better chance to go in.

I think a rule that would say that the 10 counts only if it isn't kicked in would cause more arguements than anything.

You can't assume there is going to be a referee assigned to every match. Not by a long shot. The rules of 9 ball eliminate as many arguements as possible. Example: "you didn't call that pocket!"

As you know, back in the day, the cheese spotted on the break in some events.

I have never been in favor of winning a rack that way. Given a proper rack, the 9 can't go without a purely lucky kick.

Slop luck during the rack is one thing...you still have to shoot again. But draining the 9 on the break WINS the rack when the only thing that has happened is luck.

But then I would ban the slam dunk in basketball. It's not a lucky shot but is a "non-skill" shot.

Come to think of it...you're right. But a slopped in ball should not allow the run to continue. On two way shots, where you hope to make one or the other, then call two way 4/6 (or whatever).

What I am against is PURE slop.

I think one of the things you have to ask yourself is are we completely all about having no luck so the better player wins most of the time? Are we concerned about the game being entertaining for television viewers who appreciate a money ball on the break and break neck speed kicks that go 4 rails and in (there is some skill in that btw. The player chose to kick hard.)

Or have we conceded that pool will never be on tv and there will not be much money so screw the general tv audience.

Really, power has very little to do with it. The kick will come from a ball hitting one or the other of the side rails...or the foot rail and then getting kicked itself into the 9.

All that happens with break power that just about everyone has.

Were power comes in is sending more balls past the side pockets...becuase they COULD drop and to the end rail for the same reason.

I saw a stat somehwere that the 9 on the break % for men is about 1 in 35 and only a point or two higher for women.

I think the stats would be different with the heavy 10 ball rack. Power has more than very little to do with sending the ten balls flying. Jay was mentioning yesterday as svb was crushing the balls and repeatedly making balls on the break that the other guys couldn't make a ball on the break on that table earlier. Not sure who those guys were.
