Anyone from the northeast Tennessee area that can provide some helpful input?

Well, I live in CT. I'm retired and my wife will be retiring in a few years. We're thinking about moving to a warmer climate. I hate to move into an area with tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding and bugs the size of small dogs.

I am hoping for an area with some good pool rooms, nice people, and thought northeast Tennessee might be the ticket. Any thoughts? Even other locations to look into where our new home won't wash or blow away a month after we move in. :embarrassed2:

I have lived in Chattanooga, Knoxville and Tri Cities TN, also Charlotte NC and Bowling Green KY.

I love and miss Chattanooga. I have heard that the pool scene has tapered off slightly since I left in 2009 but It was a great area.

I lived in Nashville a couple of times. Great place for lots of activities & a great pool Room.
Janet Atwell (lady pro) lives in Bristol, next door to Joe Blackburn (cue repair & instructor)... they have some good Pool there & there is plenty to see. Give them a call

My friend at BOEING moved to Knoxville for his retirement. He's the kind of guy that researches everything to the nth degree He chose to move to Knoxville, from Seattle, WA.

Murfreesboro Tn. might be exactly what you're looking for. On interstate 24 about 25 miles east of Nashville. It's got wonderful parks, great golf courses, excellent dinning and you won't find nicer people any where on the planet. Some of the best fishing in the south is practically in your back yard. It's where we raised our family and would still be there if it wasn't for work requirements. In fact we'll probably move back and retire there.

There is a great university, MTSU, that provides a wide array of cultural activities that are often free and open to the public.

As for pool, there are two rooms in Murfeesboro and a lot of rooms around it. JOB billiards in Nashville is about 45 minutes away. Jonathan Hennessee's place in Manchester is about 30 minutes away. If you're looking for action Clarksville is about an hour up 24 west and you can get a game there any night of the week.

As for the weather, it does get hot but you're not going to avoid that in the south. We lived there for 13 years and had one tornado that did any real damage.

With respect to crime....it basically doesn't exist. I'm not going to insult you by claiming it's some perfect place where nothing bad ever happens but the crime rate is unbelievably small.

Any questions just ask. Happy hunting.....

I live in Knoxville, been all over Tennessee and always come back to the Mountains.
The pool scene, its so so as to the big towns, but it is here if you know where to look.

I lived in Chattanooga my whole life until a month and a half ago. In Chattanooga you get the best of both worlds. It's a city with a small town vibe. Lots and lots of things to do with the revitalization of the downtown area. The pool scene... it's like about anywhere else. If you know where to look you kind find it. There are basically 2 main poolrooms: Chattanooga Billiard Club or "CBC", and Diamond Billiard Club or "Diamonds". CBC is a large, very commercial type of poolroom with 20 tables, a pro shop, full bar and full service restaurant. There is a small amount of action and they do have quite a large league crowd 3 or 4 nights a week. The clientele is mainly folks just out to have a good time for the evening. Diamonds, is where the action is. It's a smaller place with more of a pool hall vibe. They do have a full bar and restaurant to go with their 9 Diamond tables. There are plenty of guys who will gamble anything from friendly wagers to as much as you want to. There is a group of older guys who come in nearly every day and play flip-partner-one pocket for like $5 or $10 a man.
I love Chattanooga! It's my home. It seems you can be anywhere you need to be within an hour from Chattanooga. Someone mentioned Johnathan Henessee's room in Manchester. From Chattanooga you can be at his place within an hour. You can be in Cleveland, TN in 30 minutes where there is actually another CBC, CBC/Cleveland.
Everywhere in the south has its fair share of crazy weather, but if your looking for a milder winter climate without getting tropical, I think Chattanooga is your ticket. Knoxville and Nashville both get quite a bit more snow than Chattanooga. But the thing about snow in the south, they are never ready for it! No one knows how to drive in it and the cities do not have the equipment to handle clearing the roads expediently. So on the very rare occasion there is a major snowfall, it cripples the city for a day or two.

If you are interested in Chattanooga, feel free to PM me and I will be happy to answer any questions you might have!

I have been to several places in Tn for work and was actually born in Memphis No offense meant to anyone but I would never move back there again. lol I highly suggest the Clarksville Tn area. Great little city with several rooms close by and JOBS pool room outside of Nashville is about a 30 min or so drive from there as well.
Knoxville is not real bad just a little different feel and I would think the cost of living is a little more expensive. There are some pretty nice rooms there too from what I hear.

Hope this helps you some and I hope I didn't p*$$ anyone off

I live in Bristol (part of the tri-cities) and shoot regularly. Joe Blackburn bases out of The Corner Pocket (10 minutes away) and Janet Atwell bases out of her place in downtown Bristol, called Borderline Billiards (about 15 minutes from me.)

Honestly, there is a tourney in the tri-cities every night of the week somewhere. APA and BCA are prevalent if you like the league action. Everything is played here. 9Ball, 10, 1P, 8Ball. A few of us even shoot 14.1 :) We have senior center pool rooms that are very active, as are the local VFWs.

I have to admit that I moved here for the golf (5 courses within a 20 minute perimeter). However, the pool action is what has kept me here. You will find money games at all levels of play and also groups of people that only shoot for fun. Every flavor you would want IMO.

PM me if you have specific questions on anything. Im a Nurse, so I have some funky hours but I should reply within 24 hours at least <grin>.

I spent 13 years in East Tennessee in the Jefferson county area, one county over from Sevier county (Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Sevierville). That is NOT a good area for pool. There is all of one pool hall in Sevierville and nothing anywhere else. The odd table in the chalets maybe but not much else. They're all dry counties for the most part, few bars and even less pool halls. They do play in Knoxville, but that's a 40 minute drive from Sevier and Jefferson counties to the areas with pool. Johnson City on the other hand, has a league or two and some places to play because it's a true college town with bars, etc. I'd suggest you look in Knoxville, or up in the Tri-cities if pool is a priority and avoid the 'in-between'. Property is incredibly overpriced in that 'in-between' area and folks are the friendliest to outsiders anyhow.

Knoxville is a very fine city, I could easily live there. However, I would prefer Charleston, South Carolina or even the Greenville/Spartanburg area. Ashville, North Carolina is beautiful but I haven't spent enough time there to know if it is somewhere I'd like to live.

Brews and Billiards just opened in an older rooms location here in Knoxville... They have 10 7ft diamonds and 2 9fts with 2 more on the way... They will be adding another 10-12 tables, liquor and full kitchen in the coming months... Friday they had 22 and Saturday a full field of 32 for their weekly tournaments... Pool may get healthier here in Knoxville soon... It was waning without a place with great equipment.....

The action is still a little weak but I think that will stiffen up a little now too...

If you like leagues they run Monday thru Thursday.....

Cheap sets can always be had or funsies always can find good players to sharpen skills with....

Yeah action tapered off after the best fish moved off to Pennsylvania. Lol Hi Mark

I lived in Memphis and loved it.

It isn't on the Northeast, but with no state income tax, it was ever nicer.

Look around Fairfiled Glade. It is a retirement area with lots of Golf and retirement stuff. Because the elevation is about 2000 feet, the weather is nice but not scolding in the summer, and the bugs are not as prevalent. I just vacationed there this summer.

Thanks Ken, I've got to be honest, I'm chicken of moving anywhere near tornado alley. One of the main reasons I was looking into the northeast was that it seemed out of that area as well as far enough inland relative to the carolinas to dodge hurricanes also.

But, not knowing anything at all about the area, preliminarily I at least hoped to hear some good things.

Next in my mind would be .... are there basements in the houses? sewers? city water? or am I really moving into the sticks and Robert Mitchum will be driving by my house in a 1950 ford, 100 mph throwing fresh water bottles at me. :o

i have lived in memphis for 24 years now. moved here from fla where i was born and raised. i can tell you all about hurricanes. :grin-square:

as for tornados i know they come around these parts but i guess i been lucky so far as having never been around one yet.

as some one else posted earlier memphis itself is not the greatest city to live in but the suburbs are pretty decent.

in my opinion as far as the pool scene goes you cant ask for much better than whats available here.

my fav place is high pockets. great atmosphere and great food. several leagues ....including in house on both 9 footers and valleys. tournaments all the time. a few tables dedicated for 1 pocket. snooker table in its own room.

the rack.... all diamonds ...both 7's and 9's. open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

sharp shooters...caters mostly to the younger crowd. fastest damn valley tables i ever played on.

the rec.. just south of town across the state line...never been there but i heard its a good place.

shit load of bars with any where from 2- 8 tables in them. a couple open 24 hours a day.

plenty of cheap action ...and more depending on what you are looking for. heck i have seen a couple of apa 6's play a 1,000.00 dollar set a few times.

This post sums it all up for eastern Tennessee. I live a short drive away near Erwin, TN. and I love going up to Bristol to play at Janet's Borderline Billiards and another place run by a guy named Pete, also in Bristol. The Seniors around Johnson City are addicted to an 8-Ball game called "Alabama 8-Ball" as are the ones in Erwin. :)
