Looks like an interesting read and I love all those 70's ads! Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the post.. good articles, especially the texas monthly

There's an article about Richard Black on page 12. It talks about his cues and you wish you could still buy one for the prices quoted and delivery in four weeks! LOL

That article took me down memory lane. I played during the seventies in Dallas and apparently was one year older than Roger. His story could have been mine. I had a backer who owned a large pet shop in Dallas who wanted to stake me on the road when I graduated HS, but I had the same reservations about making pool my life as Roger did. I decided to leave the pool halls in 1973 to go to college. I hustled the bars to make ends meet until about 1979 and then laid off for 30 years. At the time Roger was knocking his brains out against Richie Ambrose (1977), I was walking across the stage with a college degree. I have never regretted that decision and the article reminds me of why I made it.

I'm not criticizing the guys who chose pool, just basically reminiscing about my decision. I started back playing a year ago and it is very nice to have the freedom of just being able to learn the things about the game that I didn't back then, with a secure life and professional income that I never would have had if I had taken the other road. The downside, though, is that I play like crap now!

Thanks for your post.

Wow a flood of memories! It was my college days in Dallas. I loved the allure of the pool hall but knew I couldn't cut it. Traveled to the places mentioned...saw Puckett in his action packed glory...Reds in Houston Katy, Dallas Times Square, Eight Ball, Lemmon Ave, Rusty's NW Hwy...The first Click's...Dick Lane...The Mizz coming through, Earthquake (California Kieth in those days)...even the ads in the magazine...Xanadu's in Houston, one of the hottest spots ever. Damn I'm sure old and as it turned out pretty plain vanilla for all I've been exposed too! Thanks for the post...Marvelous Wish I could have seen Toupee Jay in action then..LOL

"toupee Jay, who wears a toupee as a disguise"

Is that right Helfert?

I'm taking the Fifth. Actually I explain how this came about in my book. Basically, it was a fortunate accident, that made me a few extra bucks.

I played at Reds in 1984 and 1985. Grady beat me in the third round of the One Pocket, to get in the money. I remember that. But I staked Ronnie and he won the One Pocket for $4,000 + a $500 gift certificate to a men's clothing store.

I was the one who got the first signature from Caesar Morales after he won the 1985 Red's tourney. He wrote Efren Reyes on my program. I had no idea who that was. I sure do wish I still had that program. Lost it somewhere many moons ago.

I also played in LeCue in 1977. I played New York Blackie and he gave me 8-6 in One Pocket for thirty a game and I won five games. He stiffed me on the last game. :o
