The amazing game

Man, this is exciting. I've been reading the 14.1 posts for a few weeks - staying on the sidelines. I, like most on this forum, believe 14.1 is the most beautiful, difficult, frustrating, and rewarding game. I am so humbled by its challenges.

I just started playing pool again semi-regularly after 12 years off. I only get out once a week for 2 hours; its painful b/c it feels really hard to advance my game in pace with what I'm learning by reading and watching videos. I watch reyes, schmidt, ralph, mike s, niels, varner, danny h, thorsten... basically any video on 14.1. Realizing I don't have the table skills or knowledge to execute like they do, I enjoy the baby steps I'm beginning to see.

However, I would love some legitimate instruction.... currently living in Durham, NC. Does anyone travel to instruct or should I prepare myself to drive or fly?

Thanks everyone.

Welcome to the forum.:)

be very careful 14.1 is very addictive:eek: For the last month I can do nothing but run racks of straight pool. Still trying to beat my high run of 29:banghead:

Welcome to the forum, we always have room for another 14.1 enthusiast!

Get in touch with Grady Mathews in your area for lessons, he is a great instructor.

Kev

Grady is a good instructor. From time to time Danny DiLiberto travels and gives lessons and he is the mentor of the current world champion Stephan Cohen. Ray Martin posts here once in a while and he also would be an excellent instructor. Not sure but I think he is in Florida.

Hey Kev, welcome back to the pool room buddy :)

Grady Mathews has had many instructional videos over the years that cover the basic and more advance aspects of shooting pool and as an instructor, he has got a wealth of knowledge :)

Grady has his own pool room somewhere in NC and I'm sure some of the guys up here know of the location and details of it, and it'll be worth while giving the room a call and see if it's possible to make the journey and get some instruction from Grady :)

Also, try posting this same Question thread up in the "Main" section on here and there'll surely be someone that will be able to post up some extra info :)

Another recommendation is to invest in few high run DVD's like Danny Hariman's 280, and John Schmidt's 294 on the "Diamond Pro-Am" table, that will be coming out sometime in the near future, also check out videos with Blackjack's commentary on shot selection and it'll help to give a good bit more insider understanding of the game of Straight Pool

1 more final suggestion to help out is, look around the local rooms to see if there are any straight pool leagues and if not, then try canvas around the area and think about starting up a straight pool league in your area so that you can get more value in the table time that you're able to get each week or whatever :)

I hope this is of some help or another and good luck

Welcome to the straight pool world Kev ^^

if u really have the abilities to get an instructor like Grady....i would kill for it to get that chance :)

here some advices from my personal opinion: the book that gave me the largest boost after reading and workin with it was *Mastering Pool* by George Fels-and it s so fun just like reading it, too. Also the 14-1 book from Capelle is a Monster Book! These two books are the best straight pool books ever released.
A very underestimated book is the book *straight pool bible* irving crane.

go for *Mastering Pool* first- then to Capelle s Book. And i bet you will love them both. They will help u much- and watchin high runs is always a nice thing to give u some inspiration how easy this game could look like :p

all the best from germany,

The Straight Pool Bible is by Arthur "Babe" Cranfield" as I had a copy of it, but yeah it's definitely a very underrated book as art gives alot of good details info on the various break shots, etc, which is is something that alot of newcoming straight pool players could really do with learning about to give them extra options on what to look out for in a rack for any extra break balls or key balls :)

omg.............*ashamed..*

Don't sweat it buddy, after all, you're a fellow straight pool shooter and we're all human and so, it's cool

Whereabouts in Germany are you located buddy? :)

I got family living there there and am considering on maybe making the journey over there to see 'em, but I don't know what pool halls are in their area if any?

Willie

Great. Thanks to everyone for the ideas. I'm embarrassed to say I watched Efren/Rempe from the Maine Event tournament again... that's my old pool hall in Portland, Maine before I moved to NC. Its a shame I missed seeing that tourney in person.

One last thing: I'm impressed with the community around straight pool. This game seems to attract people who are generally interested in fostering others potential. I think that's pretty cool.

Thanks again.
