The AZ Room @ The Derby City Classic

I am merely stating my opinion. If we do not monitor the amount of participation in this venture it will not turn out as we hope or expect. I am sure someone will let me know how wrong I am.
You are not wrong at all. You have an opinion and that is respected, by me at least. I had an idea, maybe it will be well received, maybe not. Either way I am OK with what the majority want. If people are afraid that their ideas won't be well received, nothing would ever get done.

I think all you guys bring up valid points. To clarify though; we did not seek sponsorship directly, and it is not definite at this point. If it comes through we will use the extra money for free beverages (maybe food too, depending on the amount). I think we will divide the excess into two parts; using half for Saturday to Wednesday; and the other half for Wednesday through Saturday.

Obviously, the more people that sign up, the less table time there will be. Remember though that many have signed up that will be only occasional or non-players. Even with some professional challenges and a money match or two; there should still be time to play for most.

If we mandate that it is a challenge table, then everyone should be able to play. A format that many have approved of is to have a sign-up list for those players present in the room. The first player up plays the second player. Minimum wager is $5 (they can void it if they want to play "hee-haw"). The type of game is decided by the first player; they both must agree on the stakes however. Options are one-pocket (?race to 1 or 2?), 9-ball (race to 3 or 4), 8-ball (race to 2), full rack banks (race to 1 or 2), 9-ball banks (race to 2 or 3), straight pool (race to 50). After the match the second player now holds the table (whether he won or lost), and plays the third player on the list. After that match (win or lose) the second player leaves the table for the third player. If we make the matches an appropriate length, then everyone will get about an hour or so at the table each time, and get to play 2 different opponents each time. If you want to play more, then just put your name back at the bottom of the list.

This will force everyone to make some new friends (??enemies??), and get them a little exposure to the wonderful world of small stakes gambling. Players that are violently opposed to this type of format could just not send money in the first place; or ask for a refund BEFORE DCC. No refunds after the tournament starts.

What do you guys think of this format??? Of course, if the room is empty, I supposed you can play whatever you like; but common courtesy would be to finish up quickly if new players come to the room and start up the list.

I personally, like the idea of race to 3 in 9-ball, race to 1 in one-pocket, race to 1 in 8-ball, race to 1 in full rack banks, race to 2 in 9-ball banks, race to 50 in 14.1. I think these short games would encourage more participation and more spectating (people would hang around to spectate and commentate if they knew they were playing fairly soon).

I think you have good ideas and intentions. My main point was I did not want to have to sidestep display tables or have to take turns being a cue raffler. I am in sales as a profession not a recreation. As long as the wait on table time does not get extremely out of hand everyone will be able to enjoy this as it was intended.

I think this is a very fair way to split the money!

I'm one of those people that will be contributing but rarely if ever playing. I'll be working a booth all week at different hours of the day so I'll be popping in irregularly as it is. If I decide to play, it will be when no one or at least very people are there. After taking the last 7 to 8 yrs off, I'm not quite ready to play in front of a crowd again. ;)

Everyone likes to play different games & some games take longer than others. I think allowing all games and limiting the number of games played is the best way to please everyone.

Things have really snowballed the last couple of days on this thing. I truly believe that by the time Derby rolls around, we'll have things hammered out and have a pretty good game plan. This is the inaugural yr... mistakes will be made.... we'll learn from them and improve upon them next yr.

The wall space is all that we are using

What is the purpose of us accumulating the funds to use this room. I know this may sound like a silly or cynical question but I thought I knew and now I am not so sure. Initially it was to get a group of us forum junkies together to BS, play pool and have an area to just relax. Now it seems the agenda has become to get as many people to pledge money as possible no matter how it will ultimately effect This little endeavor. I personally would like to be able to use the table in this room occassionally and not just stand in the corner looking at it. I think having the pros come in is a great idea. I think having a table with food and a cooler(s) is a great idea. I really don't think we need to get into hocking cues or other items and advertising for people. I just don't don't think we need to branch out in to marketing. At first we were hoping to come up with the money and not knowing if that would happen. Now that the financial goal has been reached it seems the concensus is to make this into some grand exhibit. IMO, this will be more pleasurable for everyone if it is kept on a scale small enough for us to enjoy the room. I have no pull and I am not asking for a following. I am merely stating my opinion. If we do not monitor the amount of participation in this venture it will not turn out as we hope or expect. I am sure someone will let me know how wrong I am.

Myself, I don't see anything wrong with selling wall space. I don't think it will affect the room at all. The room is still going to be for AZ-OP paid members only. I THINK any raffle tickets sold in this room will be for members only. Any others sold would be sold to anyone but outside of the room. I think the table will still be for members only and pros. The pros will bring a lot to the table and will be enjoyed by good players as well as non or novice players. I know I don't intend to use the table that much at all. I'm there for action and wouldn't want to be limited in time. After all there is 200 other tables available.
Hey, this is all new to Williebetmore & I - We are kind of flying by the seat of our pants and just doing what makes sense to us. I'm sure we will make some mistakes but we will learn and go on.
I do value your opinion though and all others.
Thanks, Tom

Make no mistake. I was not being critical of your efforts in any way. I appreciate the time you both have committed to this project. I was merely stating that as of the present time we have more than enough committed with more to come I am sure. With the amount of interest, and the welcome commitment of the pros, table time is likely to be at a premium. I was only voicing my concern that we as a group might be getting too big for our britches. I am only going to be in attendance for the final 3 days and in all likelihood will be occupied with other pursuits as well. I was thinking of the collective good and if the extent of the (sponsorship) is signage on the walls only then I see no real harm. I am maybe a little too cynical but I have never known anyone, especially in the pool community, to give something for nothing. I hope this helps to clarify my outlook.

D-man,
I think we all have the same concern. Too big, and many will feel ripped off for contributing and not getting to play; too small and boredom sets in quickly. I'm sure it is obvious that WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT WE ARE DOING!! Still, I think there should be some fun involved - live and learn.

P.S. - While I'm not sure of the level of play - I am NOT worried about having extra money for refreshments. There MUST be some expert level drinkers on this board. Also, if there are extra beverages, we will send them home with whomever agrees to bring the same amount back next year. If there is extra money; we can use it towards a room next year (if people like the experience). Or give it to charity. Or pro-rate it and return it to the donators.

P.P.S. - The only thing I AM SURE OF, is there is ABSOLUTELY NO STRIP POOL PERMITTED (unless pretty girls and myself are involved anyway).

Well, if this match goes down, I hope you get the nuts, because I'd hate to see you lose. ;)

You pulled the thought out of my head before I got to the end of your post.
I game of your choice for all of your clothes, When the loser is naked, the
next player is up ... lol

One little suggestion for fun ... That all AZ'rs have to do a trick shot of
their own making, and the best one performed gets a prize.

I just found this thread after it was mentioned somewhere else. I'm not sure if I'm making it, but I'd be happy to contribute to this. I just skimmed the fifteen or so pages, so if someone could let me know where to send some money I'd appreciate it.

PM - Williebetmore w/ return email and real name info

What booth are you going to be working?

LOL, I'll tell you so long as you guys promise not to lynch me! They called me this week and made me an offer to work the booth since they knew I was going.... I just changed jobs so this whole week off of work will be unpaid... it was a no brainer.

I'll be working the Inside Pool booth.

Really?

Can I get the next issue autographed or should I not expect any preferential treatment.

They had a good spot last year, right at the entrance of the tournament room and right across the hall from the beer stand. ;)

I don't know who is on the cover. I was hoping it would be someone that's there so that I could get them to autograph some copies. In the past I've always known IP to give away the current copy on the stands. I don't know if I'll be able to pull it off due to the hectic scheduling of the tourney but I was hoping to maybe get a couple of pro's to maybe sit at the booth for a few min & sign autographs if at all possible. Ktown, I've forgotten half of what's been posted on this long thread. Are you going to be there? If not, I'll be more than happy to put a copy aside & get what autograph(s) I can for you and send it to you.

Can I give my money at the DCC?

G-man,
At the risk of offending someone who gives Mothra the seven; I think we'll have to restrict playing privileges to people paying ahead of time. There is no one volunteering to be an attendant; and the room is going to be paid for in advance - I'm no accountant, and its already starting to get complicated. Still looking forward to seeing all of you at DCC.
