The beneficial purpose of winning the Mosconi Cup

Asside for having this cup for the rememberance of the great Willie Mosconi, can you tell me (this "young blood") why it is entirely important for the US to win this cup? Is it because there is a bigger cash reward or what? I am quite puzzled that the majority of the players from both teams (litterately) play in their prime in this cup than in any other pool jams IMHO.

I would really enjoy some insight from any of you AZers to ooze my head with your knowlege on why this cup is so prestigeous.

To me it's all about the pride of representing your country (or continent in the Euro's case.) As far as I'm concerned when people play in the Open or World Championship they're playing for themselves mainly, with their nationality being a side issue.

Being picked to play for the USA or Europe is an honour. I can't imagine a better motivator than that.

I agree that the purpose fo winning the Mosconi Cup is for bragging rights that that team, whether it is USA or Europe, is the best at that event. It goes towards national pride.

I was told that there is $100,000 added. I don't know if the winning team pockets more dough than the losing team. Somebody in the know told me that each member pockets about $8,000 or thereabouts for their participation.

The Mosconi Cup is now a pool tradition between USA and Europe. Maybe someday they will have a Team Asia enter the fray. It is disappointing that there is not more Americans attending this event in Vegas, when the Mosconi Cup is on American soil.

It is just a sign of the times about how popular pool is in the States maybe.

I think it's a combination of both pride in playing for your country, and the fact that it is a team event. Nobody wants to be the one that lets down the team, so the motivation to perform at your best is always there. This event usually brings out the best in all the players.

The Mosconi Cup has never mattered more than now, and whether our American hometown heroes would care to admit it or not, they have much to prove.

What has happened at the World Pool Championships over the past two years has been disastrous. In 2006, there were no Americans in the last sixteen and in 2007, there was just one American in the last sixteen and none on the last eight. Meanwhile, Europe had three of the four semifinalists.

The image of the American pool player on the world stage needs rebuilding. A win today at the Mosconi Cup would be a good start, and I think we've got a great shot at it today.

Being Australian, the last time you guys had a war it was the war of independence. Its another war. Europe wants to impress its not a snooker nation. Eat a peach in the phillipines and now theres a shift in the balance of power with the mosconi cup too. Its a race to six that anyone can win, as some put it but its much more that and its going to hurt the loser.

they say every player is paid 10k just for participating, and there is a chance to double it for the winning team member. I don't remember if it is for the first time when Mosconi Cup has a prize fund for the winners.
But it's more of a show than of a real competition IMO, still the pride of representing your country and being a part of pool history is there.
