The best butt for under $2000

I would buy a McDermott Merry Widow, and learn to play with it.

Skill & Pool IQ is more important then Cue, JMHO.

Earl Strickland got paid well to play with a CueTech, Earl Skill made the CueTech plsy well.

One that looks and feels the way you like.

I don't think a butt has much or any effect on performance. It does have an effect on feel but that's all personal preference. So whether you like a thick or a thin butt, a forward or more rearward balance, what type of wrap you like, etc. it's all personal preference.

You can get a cheap (but still quality) butt and pair it with a really good shaft and I don't think you're any worse off performance wise than someone with a real fancy high end butt using the same shat.

Can you post pictures. Very interested in Guffey cues, and not a lot of info/examples out there.
It's a very simple Carom cue, Burgandy-stained Birdseye Maple.

In 1990 my friend Paul Jones was in OK spoke with John, about me. He'd said He had never built a Carom cue.
He called me, I gave John all the specs I prefer over the phone.
3 months later, the cue arrived at my home, the cue came out 98% perfect!
I was amazed, for a cue maker that had never built one before!

Here I am playing (with John Guffey cue) in the 93 3C World Teams Championship with Sang Lee representing the USA!

There was cotton in the butt cap which is a signature move bill does with his cues
I've been doing that since 81 with my 'Modified McDermott C3'!

I put separated 'Cotton Balls' to fill in the 6"-10" weight bolt hole, this gives the cue 'Less Vibration'!

Sometimes if the butt needs a 1/4 oz weight, I put the cotton balls in up to the point I grip the cue 95% of the time.
Butt the set screw up against the c balls and fill the rest of the hole to the bumper with c balls.

I only know a few........

You ask what is the best pool cue butt to get? Your inquiry suggests you play with a carbon fiber shaft so all you require is a cue butt to complete the package. However, have you figured out what you like in pool cue anatomy?

I mention it because you need to know the weight of the butt you want, butt diameter, is it cored for an extension if you
preferred, reliance on a weight bolt to deliver the weight you want, type of pin, wrap (type) or wrapless and appearance.

Do you have any design in mind for the cue butt or just plain like a Merry Widow design. If you want it to look a certain
way with rings, points, veneers, inlays, what design do you have in mind? Some cue makers are just better than others.

Building a cue butt is not hard but building something you like and meets all of your requirements, well, that’s not nearly
as easy. So your question as worded is almost worthless if you want any meaningful replies. Instead, specify what you
want and if you aren’t sure, think about it and return with the information. Otherwise, you are just going in circles.

For that price you’ve got to get a custom butt. Spending that much on a production cue would be funny.

Start with the shaft you want. I assume since you’re asking about a butt specifically, you’ll be using an aftermarket shaft. If CF, none of them have joint rings so the butt joint needs an aesthetic to match.

For 2k, any custom guy outside of the elite like black boar should have something fancy for you.

I am going to put a Revo on it.
  1. I think the butt handle should be about 2-3mm slimmer than usual(whatever that means IDK).
  2. I am more into the tech than fancy. I don't need fancy... I'm a functionality + value type.
  3. I want something that will take me to my grave before warping.
  4. The Idea of a forward weight butt sounds cool. If they made a 2 oz butt with a 13 oz joint - I would probably want that!
  5. I can barely tell the difference between a P3, C4+, and true splice. But true splice and C4 seem like the same softness. All of which is negligible.
  6. I think I would like a super hard stiff cue. Is that a full Ebony cue? IDK what the hardest wood is.

If all of the money is going towards fancy:
  • I seen a spiral laminated cue that look cool.
  • Maybe some thick 1 inch wide rose gold rings spaced every 6 inches. In between the six inches, alternating triangles of REAL abalone and REAL green jade.
  • Wrapless handle with ivory white curly maple which is actually curly ebony.
  • the bottom 4 inches next to the butt cap, more spiral ebony laminated together, except every other laminate would be ebony and then rose gold ribbon strips.
How much will this cost? Production butt is fine too.

Most butts are similar and it doesn't make much difference what one is selected. McDermott's H-Series allows, however, a player to modify the butt weight anywhere along the butt length. I don't think any other butt does that. Maybe the closest to that is Mezz's Avant that allows weights to be placed in two places in the butt (butt end and forearm). Black Blade cues are different in having butts as light as 10 ounces.
