The complete pool outfit, help needed

Some cuemakers say don't use anything at all and you can go that route too, just use the leather to burnish the wood when it gets tacky. A carnuba paste wax would likely take years (many, many years) to affect the wood if the cuemaker did the job right and sealed the shaft pores (some don't). The main thing is to try and keep the shaft clean so you don't have to do much to the shaft.

But the only problem with wax is that it gets soft and becomes a grit magnet. Also, the stuff rolls up, falls on the felt and other players start to pick it up on their cue. My thought has always been that wax has no place in pool.

ok now i get it. (about the tip part :D )

the cleaning part is still not 100% clear (my english isnt very good, and i dont understand the difference between words like silk, slick, etc.)

Solly the cleaning and polishing part can get compicated. If you want to make it easy click the link at the bottom of Pete Lafonds post.....a number of people on the forums have tried it and like it better than ANYTHING else they've used ( and trust me everthing has been used by people on this forum).;)

i wipe my cue off/buff while i am playing with a cotton towel..before i put my cue away for the day i put a paste wax on it ...a product called Q WAX...let it on 10 minutes to dry ..then wipe off/buff with a clean cotton towel...another same type of product is made by KIWI for shoes..purchased at Walmart..called WET PRUF(a paste wax)...FOR ME it provides a very slick surface and it protects the surface...if you want to use another furniture type of product and it works for you then that's great...

i forgot to add i have been using that Q WAX product for 3 years on a new cue i purchased back then.....i play almost everyday several hours a day and the cue looks like new...many people have asked me about the cue thinking it is brand new...if wax bits are falling onto the table then a person did not buff off the wax good enough..it leaves a very slick finish when buffed out for about 20 seconds.......

ok, im starting to get it.

ps the wax doesnt clean right? neither does this new product everyone talks about. it just to make it smooth?
wax + this new product would be to much too right?

sorry for the newbee questions, but i just want to get it right from the start. im VERY keen on keeping my gear in TOP form. if i had a car, id wash it 3 times a day probably :D

ps Cuejoey, there is in fact Q wax, Q clean, Q slick, Q glide. i dont really get the difference in all these products. to me they are all waxes that cleans so u get a slick glide :D but i supose they are different...

Yes wax and other products is to much. Go to slipstic site and read up on the products, they're supposed to be VERY GOOD! If you have questions ask Pete Lafond. Just remember whatever you use rub down the shaft before you play and don't use a cleaner until you just can't stand the sight of your shaft anymore (all cleaners can cause some damage).

Oh another thing you might look into if you like to use powder on your hands is a talc bag. Personally I prefer to keep hands clean and only use talc on my bridge fingers.

the Q WAX is just a protective coating ( paste wax ) myself i like it..when done properly it leaves a slick surface on it...about every 5 mins.while playing i wipe the shaft with a soft cotton towel....always keep your hands clean and dry ...i do not use anything to clean my cues other than wiping them with a soft towel and the wax gives them a protective coating..like i said in my previous post my cue (shaft light colored like new) looks like new 3 years later and with all that use i put it thru................try it and see how it feels ..if not try the other methods that others have suggested..i have tried the Q Slick just about 3 drops on a towel and wipe it and buff your cue shaft it will provide a slick surface ..nice but expensive..it's your choice ......

hi all, after many hours spend here, i finally know all i needed to know about cue's, and i will be ordering them soon, but now ive got these questions.

what extra's do i need to have.

there are SO many things out there.

What kind of a cue are you going to get? You might want to get a shaper.

I will probably get blasted on this one, but it is really hard
to take anyone that wears a glove to be a serious Pool player.
They are kind of viewed like a 'sissy'. Do you think wearing
gloves has helped Earl? I don't.

With most people, a glove is not for looks, but it is a necessity because they have consistently damp hands. It is a problem that only a glove can cure, if you give it a chance. I am fortunate that I don't have that problem because like ANYTHING foreign, it takes a while to get used to. Meanwhile, there are more than a few players out there that would be more than happy to relieve an unsuspecting victim of thier cash while the victim gets a good hardy laugh at the hustler's glove.

Sissy, huh? I may not be the best player, but I can tell you that after someone makes fun of my glove and I beat him they laugh no longer...

My hands perspire, and get sticky, and the cue crabs as soon as the humidity is anywhere near normal. A glove does away with all those problems. When wearing a glove there is never any danger of the cue crabbing. Slipstik may work fine for lots of folks, but a glove is better, IMHO.

Oh, there's another thing. Anybody fixin' to hustle a game better watch out if they spot someone shooting with suspenders and a glove. Every once in a long while I get in dead stroke...

Flex

If a glove helps, fine, quit insulting people for using something that works for them....unless you're scared to play him...

When I finish a shaft, I use a sanding sealer with it in the lathe and work it until it starts to get warm....nothing else is needed, the shaft is so slippery afterwards that nothing is ever needed..just use a towel during play...

Also a shaft is best just to let the natural oils of your hand and time do the rest of the job of "conditioning" your shaft....and NEVER use sandpaper...

ok; so recap to be sure:

use ultimate tip tool to get rid of the muschroom IF it muschrooms, use the other side to make it smooth on the sides and top, and use the tip pik to put holes in the top of the tip so the chalk holds better.

then put 3 drops of that new product from pete's signature on a towel or tshirt, rub it back and forward ( how many times? till it gets warm? or no specific thing), then use Q wiz or a leather square and rub it back and forward to smoothen it even more. (or do u put that product directly on the cue and use the leather? or u put it on the leather?)

after every rack i play, quickly take a towel or tshirt and clean the cue and hands.

last question: how often do u have to use this new product? only after every training?

man im filled with questions :D
perhaps no one has a small avi file where they explain how to maintain a cue? would be easyer :D

I've tried all those things you mentioned. The only one I still use is the chalk/chalk holder. I find that having my own chalk I'm very much more likely to remember to chalk before every shot. If I use the table chalk I forget, if I use my own chalk I get into a habit of shoot, reach for my chalk, chalk up, replace chalk, shoot again.

I think if you keep your shaft clean (and don't perspire more than normal), the gloves, powders, and shaft treatments are unnecessary. I found the ultimate tip tool type things to be ineffective and destructive to my ferrule. Get a good tip and at most you need something to trim a mushroom once.
JMHO.

My cuemaker, Bob Owen of Shurtz custom cues, told me that to never
use anything to slick your shaft up but a WOOD POLISHER. Any other
product has chemicals in it that degrades the wood in your shaft over
time. I took him at his word since he knows about it much more than I
do.

What exactly did he mean by "WOOD POLISHER"? Butcher's wax or the like?

For the last 7 years my pool outfit has been: 2 black pool gloves, chalkholder utility belt with the batman logo on it, some dark grey tights with black underwear, a black leather breastplate with the batman logo on it, black steel batman mask, and I do drive a batmobile (chrysler). It's so fun!
