The Death Of Pool

Locally, we had a nice 22-table room with a good restaurant and bar, and a separate room for league play/tournaments. Never gave the local police any trouble, not an action room but a nice quiet place to play.

Burned down last February and the owner has been trying to get started on a rebuild ever since. The local gov't has been raising all sorts of hoops - it was part of a strip shopping center (same owner) and now they say the undamaged half of the shopping center (a real estate office and a hair salon) has to be raised to the new codes, more and handicap restrooms, etc. before he can rebuild the pool hall. He is still fighting, but it's a legal nightmare. We're all hoping he doesn't throw in the towel, but it don't look good.

Walt...OMIGOSH, that wasn't Ivy Farms Billiards was it? If so, that's a real shame, as I always enjoyed playing and teaching in that room, the few times I've been there!

Jeff...Be patient! Marc Oelschlager (sp.?) has received all of his permits and is opening a beautiful new room in Des Moines, with plenty of 9' tables within the next few months. This has been 'on the drawing board' for a while now, but everything is done, and he has a projected opening date of late fall 2004.

Randy G and I will be doing a 3-day Cue Tech pool school there early next year.

Thanks, Scott. How about putting me on your mailing list so I can maybe attend your event?

I heard at league Thursday night that a new room is opening "in 3-4 weeks" with six barboxes and five 9-footers. The place I heard about is at about 64th and Hickman---is this the one you're talking about?

I don't think I know Marc...is he from Des Moines?

Jeff...I believe that is the place, only I heard it had 30 tables, not 11. I do know that it is located in W. DM, so that address fits the bill. Marc is a pro player from Fargo, ND, but owns poolrooms there, Sioux Falls, SD (Breaktime Billiards), and now this new room in Des Moines. If you email me, with a phone number, I'll contact you when we have specific dates for the pool school (poolology@aol.com). BTW, just in case you're interested, I'll be in Des Moines next Saturday (10/2), giving lessons...and I have a 9' Diamond table at my disposal.

Wonder of wonders........we even have a new room opening in Galesburg Il !!
Billiards on Main I think is the name.

They've got the new Gold Crowns all set up. Ten of them I thnk and a few Valley 7 fts. Nice place, on Main St with a bar and resturant.

I don't think this area is big enough or into pool enough to support the place but I'll be spending some there in my effort to keep them going :)

There are many stories just like that regarding action with the Feronis, but if you can put up with the BS you'll get some good action. Was that pro player Kim Davenport? You'd play him on the barbox? I'll take Kim, even with the bum eye, no offense. By the way you played very well at the open and have represented az well, by all accounts! My friends that have had success with the Feronis are Paul Juarez and Tinsley Johnson, do you know them?
