The HOF, BCA, BD and the UPA

Grady

Pro Player
I'll do the 14.1 Championship Of The World every year, beginning with $30,000 added, without the BCA. All I need is to rent 15 booths at $1,000 each and I'll give each vendor double space and a lifetime rate at the thousand bucks.
With the gracious help of one of the country's best amateur leagues, I'll have 2,000 amateurs along with whatever I decide to do with pro events.Diamond Tables and I (Greg Sullivan) will have multiple ring games, including a Bank ring game. My political views do not necessarily reflect the stances of Diamond Pool Tables.
I have a choice between several first rate facilities, including a Ritz Carlton but I have to make a decision soon if I want to do something this year.
I already have the support of some major industry companies who are as sick as I am of the status quo.We are perfectly willing to start our own HOF, our own trade show and our own tournaments.
I NOW CALL FOR THE RESIGNATION OF MIKE PANOZZO, THE BOYCOTTING AND ULTIMATE DOWNFALL OF THE BCA AND THE END OF THE UPA.
I have made every effort to work with the BCA. They don't even answer my letters any more. Well, I have the time-honored two word response to them and Panozzo and the UPA.
Please call me if you are interested or can help in any way with staging wonderful professional events without favortism or politics being involved. I just can't continue, along with my marvelous wife, to lose money on our tournaments. My phone number is: 1-803-407-0047. I look forward to hearing friom you. Grady

Damn, I really wish you the best of luck in this! Maybe with enough help a few people like your self can turn pool from a "hobby" into a recognized "sport" with all the good things associated with sports, including money and recognition!!

Maybe one day there will be the "Indianapolis 500" for pool. $500,000 in prize money would be a good start. I remember when the DCC was first being advertised as a million dollar event. I wish it could get that far.

go for it

Yo Grady, you just listed the evil gang of 3, you missed one, it's the evil gang of 4 who has held pool back for decades, ESPN. You are right, it is time for another revolt like occured at the BCA show in KCMO in 93, the players should rise up and take their game back. The first thing that must be destroyed is the BCA, that needs to be changed into a trade organization that does exactly that, promotes suppliers and does not control and run the game. 2nd, the upa has to go and a real tour put out. The magazine guy, he puts out the stuff the guys who rent ads tell him to. Rent ads from him amigo, he dances on your string also like the little puppet he is. Good luck my friend, do your revolt, you should lead it and become the new leader, you can do it man, go for it.

At Long Last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I were younger and more adept at the game so as to be able to participate at a higher level of play. All I am capable of doing is supporting you by attending as a spectator and spending my hard earned money in that venue.

Over the years I have seen all of the mentioned organizations fail miserably with their self serving modus operandi.

They have never done anything to make the game not only respectable but monetarily advantageous foer the players!!!!!!!!!

You take first place in a golf tourament you might get a check for a million dollars. If you make the cut and play on Sunday finishing in last place at least your expenses are paid.

They make it seem as if all pool players get free room, board and travel. Oh if only that were true.
Good luck in your endeavor and do not lose faith in your goal.

You and others of your ilk should be traveling the country promoting these events and earning a decent living doing it. Also it is about time this sport comes back around to what it used to be. The hell with television and their demands on how the games should be played.

No one complains when they televise a baseball game that turns out to be a real pitchers duel where the final score ends up 1 to 0 and only 4 or 5 balls make it to the outfield.

What they need is a sports announcer who can create some excitement and interest in the game.
Remember when we played pushout? If they would only have given it more time so the weaker players could learn when and when not to take the shots the game of 9 ball would be much better.

What about having some goals to shoot for ? Trying to beat Mosconi's high run in straght pool or Eddie Taylor's high run in banks etc.

The audience for pool for the most part does not have a clue as to what is happening anyway.

I am sick of watching these commentators describe what the player is going to do next and looking like fool when the player does something else. Do you think that does not confuse the non-players. Wait till the shot has been played and then explain how and why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck to you in your effort. Your diligence and expertise will win out in the end

Bravo Grady,
At the Derby City Classic I witnessed a great straight pool match between Pagulayan and Schmidt (5 hours, for $4,000, final Pagulayan 300, Schmidt 298). This was one of the best sporting events I have ever seen. The nine ball matches that took place were more like a boring exhibition. Yes, the players are excellent and you will see lots of good shots; but in these short races it seemed like every game depended on the break and the luck of the break. You could predict 80% of the time who would win the game after viewing the table after the break. This is not the game to determine who the best players in the world are.

I play in a straight pool league in Indy (has been in existence for over 35 years). Several of us would drive anywhere to see a major 14.1 tournament, keep the site posted on your plans. Let us know if you need volunteers, referees, etc.

Booth - hell yea

Hey Grady, I'll take a booth. If nothing else Ms Randi and Cindy can fill it up with shoes :D :D :D :D :D

Come out West!

Hey Grady,

We would love to see a tourney of this calibre out here in Seattle, plenty of people out here have been screaming for a good event for years. As a native of Seattle I know my way around this town real well and can help line up all of the various requirements to put on a tournament. Let's see if we can get a stop in Seattle if a new tour materializes... We all need to strive for better national balance in billiard tourneys and exhibitions, it just helps the game.

I was just reading in BD the other day about you and Diamond working on the DCC. It's evident that this great event occurred in spite of the pool organizations. A 14.1 championship would be great. I was just watching Ortman/Mizerak and West/Zuglan the last few days. Knowledgeable announcers and a great game.
How can a pool enthusiast help? Dennis

Mini DCC

Grady, we talked about the tournament you were working on for the Gulf Coast. Do you think a MINI DCC type with multiple events and ring games would work there? Or are you just looking at a 9 ball tourny?

I know that Grady is talking about Pro Players, but I'm just curious what the Pros and businesses in our industry think about the amateaur league. What do you guys think about the American Poolplayers Association (APA)? Is it going to produce some of the next Pros? Is it a legit amateaur league? Is it good for the sport? Is it a bunch of bull****?
What are your thoughts?

Thanks,
Zim

I dont think many of the players in the APA aspire to be Pros. After all theres
not really anything to establish someone as a "PRO". The APA is a good training ground for beginners and intermediate players but then they
would move on to regional and independant events.
If a tour is ever established then a void would be between the league level
and the Pro level that someone could fill. Maybe just a higher level league that gave an opportunity for players to move to a tour event or two.

IMO Amateur pool is a very good thing for pool. I dont know if a good Pro organization will ever come about but theres alot of potential viewers/audience being built in the leagues.
I think it would be interesting to have a team match with 6-10 players
per side half of which are Pros and the other half from two competing
companys. Such as McDonalds and Burger King or Miller vs Bud. These
types. Give them time to find existing employees that can hold a stick and practice a bit. It could be a charity event but with 4-5 of these an interest
in sponsorship might be born. At worst it would put pool in the same sentence as well known non-billiards companies that advertise heavily. Make it 8 ball and scotch doubles to where the players get involved and theres more makeable shots.

I also agree with the guy above that talked about ESPN. If they dont want it
then go elsewhere. With cable everywhere now theres too many other options.

Does the armed services have a championship for pool? I met a guy once that said he was the champion and wondered if it was for real.
