So we find ourselves back at the pool room 2 days after the initial $3,000,000
score, actually several hundred thousand more on the side.
The kid is seated back at his table, chicks in tow with the stuffed bags, but more important to his overall plan, the real money is deposited at the cage of the casino owned
by our man we call Casino who accompanies the Drug lord we call King pin or KP for ease

The pool crowd is composed of a different kind of player from the normal pool room, the hangers on and $5 players have been replaced by the wealthier sorts like casino owners, and execs, smaller druggies than KP,show piz personalities, show performers , Book makers and the sorts that can really place bets.

You might ask why they are here, but many of them played when they were younger and the taste for this down and dirty action still remains in their blood

It is time for them to have one more fling, win money, easy money and maybe just maybe get a little recognition for being "smart" "with it sorts" ego fed as well as money
motivated.

Everyone there appears eager to win but the fun lovin lucky stiff kid,who in their opinion would already be out of money, flat, dead broke had it not been for one lucky shot.
One lucky shot that Eddie "the Knoxville Bear" Taylor did not even think would go

Suspicion is kept to a minimum by the kids foolish dress,Ivy league penny loafers button down shirt,no socks and clean cut hair do and demeanor. He is nothing like these sharks, and that alone separates him from them.leading them to conclude with a syllogism that goes something like this,we are smart and hip and look alike, minor premise...he doesn't l;ook like us dress like us or act like us

Conclusion:He is not smart like us

No one says this is set up like a formal reason, but it makes do for them.heck the major premise might contain fals information, but hey!!! this is still the pool room

So the kid sits back as one after another of the patrons approach the kid with offers of pool games with Gigantic spots like 8 to 2,the break,a hand span etc,and the kid takes a few loses most of them but wins about 1 of every five bets

Along the way people bring proposition bets ,one after another, some pool propositions.card propositions, even Maverick solitaire.

The kid falls for one after another, laughing when the proposition is explained,he is seen paying off $1000 here saying"you got me" another "I must be a sucker"
and another"I love it,that's the best so far"

Here we are seeing how the kid is skillfully buying himself an image ,in short it screams "i don't have to have the nuts to play"

Poker players are aware of this,When I returned to playing a little poker I realized I was playing too tight,I was stuck in the 60s where fundamental percentage play would win most of the time, but this is 2016 where people have gone beyond the basics of mathematical probability

I quickly discovered that when I bet big, everyone folds their hands,I might as well have had a sign on my forehead saying I

"I have great cards"
I needed to develop a style that mixed bluffing and random large bets to encourage confusion, fear, pressure in my opponents minds.
Power poker was what I needed

but alas you guys don't want to hear how I did that and the few scores that....
back to our hero the kid,he has the right image and therefore when he offers to bet,no one is threatened, they just comply

So as time goes by a certain bookish looking professorial sort comes up with a cagey yet simple algebra problem.A word problem

he brings the problem to the kid,the kid loses $500,the prof brings another ,the kid misses but says 'I need to adapt a little quicker,I think I am getting the hang of it"

after each loss the professor has to show how to work each problem and the Kid is rolling in laughter .
The professor pulls another out of his little book and entitled 100 tricky yet simple math puzzles or something to that effect
so he brings up this problem on the pool table he rolls one ball one way it passes another ball rolling the other opposite way and explains that his is what he means to describe

The problem he offers IS THIS"TWO BOATS FROM OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE River EACH GO THE THE OTHER SIDE AND BACK,THE FIRST TIME THEY PASS ITS 3 MILES FROM SHORE,THEY REACH THE OTHER SIDE AND MEET THE SECOND TIME At 7 MILES FROM THE SHORE" How wide is the river?

NO TRICKS,FOR OUR PURPOSES THE BOATS MAINTAIN THE SAME CONSTANT SPEED,EACH HIS OWN SPEED NO TIME EXPENDED TURNING AROUND,PURE MATH

Well the kid says Ok and offers to bet $2000,the professor seems slow to take the bet and the kid says forget it.

But the patrons rush in 'I will take it"echos through the room, before the noise dies down the KP offers to take $100,000.the casino say $250,000,and other casino owners say the same. The kid says whoa, you guys must think I'm stupid, I can do this if I had the time

How much time?
Oh,maybe 2 hours

No talking to anybody, you can't leave the room

I don't need help.I am going to college,I made an A in Algebra.you guys could be losers just like when I made that pool shot.I suggest you hold onto your money"

How dumb can this kid be"? if he could do it he would be making them post , !not giving them time to weasel out.Besides these guys don't want to look f like flakes in front of the whole world

So KP says i will take $1,00,000 its at the cage" Casino says "the casino acknowledges this and will stand for the bet and also for his fellow casino owners"

At last about $3,'00'0,000 is covered

About this time a Knocker arises and says"it is not that difficult a problem, its a trap

The kids laughs and says "I told you guys ,how many want out? no one wants out ,they remove the knocker from the premises for the tome being

For now i leave you guys with the problem and i will resume the thread when somebody comes up with the answer

The problem he offers IS THIS"TWN BOATS FROM OPPOSITE SIDES OFTHE LAKE EACH GO THE THE OTHER SIDE AND BACK,THE FIRST TIME THEY PASSX ITS 3 MILES FROM SHORE,THEY REACH THE OTHER SIDE AND MEET THE SECOND TIME AY 7 MILES FROM THE SHORE"

NO TRICKS,FOR OUR PURPOSES THE BOATS MAINTAIN THE SAME CONSTANT SPEED,EACH HIS OWN SPEED NO TIME EXPENDED TURNING AROUND,PURE MATH

That question isn't complete. Are you asking for the speed of the boats, or the width of the lake? Either way, you can't figure that out with the info that is supplied. When they meet each time, what side of the lake are you measuring the distance out from, the same each time, or from opposite shores?

OK, assuming the second distance is from the same shore, the total width is 8 miles. Also, the slower of the two boats is travelling at a rate that is 60% of the other.

(x-3)/3=(x+7)/(2x-7)

42 is the answer, 42?

Carey got the correct answer and the correct method was used
I hope you guys enjoyed the problen

Carey what is your math back ground

also stay tuned for the next proposition.
I think it will really test you guys,it is still a big money winner, simple but confusing

The prop depends entirely on the presentation, you can not walk into any place a get a big bet
it must be set up elaborately

tHE KID ,PROCEEDS TO SCRATCH HIS HEAD FOR A WHILE,MOVES HIS PENCIL PRETENDS TO BE TRYING TO USE TWO UNKNOWNS X AND Y AND FINALLY GETS LUCKY its off to the casino ,rounds are bought for the whole pool room, pizza arrives, the shine boy gets a $500 tip,the dames giggle, the Kp says "kid you are a genius"
The casino says"thats for sure" but everyone needs to stock up and ,the kid leaves ready to play miniature golf and eat a cheeseburger with mayonnaise and he picks up the tab for the Kp and the House and the long train

so at the miniature golf course the kid bets it up,losing over $250,000,maybe more,.KP wins most of it but the patrons a reluctant to bet big. This is just a chance for the kid to show off his poor form

The gang agrees to meet at the buffett, where only the highest Casino owners and KP eat before golfing
with the poker players who have been beating Kp pretty badly.
they get to the course and only the Kp seems ready to play so he plays the kid for $10,000 pr hole
both end up shooting around 85 and everyone agrees the kid plays average, but he plays high

I know this story has strayed and its the first time its been made public,it is not strictly pool.
but it is concerning pool and gambling is pool

Look at Jack Cooney,he needs 8 to 4 to play SVB,but Jack wins money so he is in the hall of fame

In fact he might need a lot more,a lot more weight, maybe the break and 8 to 4 against Scott Frost

finally one of the better playing poker players offers the kid a stroke a hole except the par 3 holes.
They enjoy a pretty even round with hardly a dime passing hands

when they arrive at the 19th hole the kid ask if anyone wants to go have fun, everyone does and the kid's Lemo sports everyone off to a batting range where they choose or pick partners and bet on number of balls hit, including foul tips ,This creates a feeling of pal ship that only high stakes poker player experience.Old fat guys are found cheering for the kid or against him,who cares lets have fun.Maybe we can play poker and the kid will be through having fun. We have been needing new money, and here he is.On the way home they just happen to have a basketball and one of the fat guys used to be a free throw shooter,ex college player, this cost our hero $50,000,but he laughs, the guys slap him on the back, they even spill the beans about setting him up,the kid says ok "its open game.I am taking the gloves off. The poker players offer to take the kid out ,,his money is no good, the rest of the party is on them

You see once again the class of these poker players, nothing like the pool cheapskate bums we often see..These guys are used to winning themselves, and they know how to grease the skids, enjoy life, spread the wealth and create a limate of friendship,at least superfically

As the day closes the kid slips and falls, hurting his wrist, the broads tell him to get it looked at so off goes our hero to the emergency ward.It will be 2 days before the kid shows his face and the fruits of his labors are about to expand exponentially.
All of this crazy behavior will now result in the kid making his move for the big money

How wide is the RIVER? Gee, the problem started out with the boats being on a LAKE.

I am just fortunate to be working on my Master's degree in Engineering, and have to keep all of this type of stuff fresh in my head. My pool game, however, is starting to suffer greatly because of it.

I can't wait to hear how much of what was going on was all part of the big score. Who the kid knew before walking in, and what he was doing went towards a big payoff. Just like in the movie Law Abiding Citizen, there could be years of planning and set up before the action starts. (not a con movie, but this story has the same intrigue and wow factor)

Dean,

I'm having fun on AZB Forum again, please keep it up! :)
Dave

I freaked out yesterday when I couldn't seem to find the thread again to read what happened next. There should be a separate forum room with stories, and this one should be a sticky!

So we find ourselves with the Kid enjoying his new found attention.
The poker players invite the kid to the regular private game in the private casino room
now the Kid really is a great poker player, maybe not in this league but pretty good, but his friend Waco Sam is perhaps the best head up player ever until Archie. So Sam,who is very smart and knowledgeable takes the kid aside and schools him

finally Sam says ,since you don't really care if you lose $500,000 over a couple of plays and you have nothing to do,this is the way i want you to play

Well rather than bore you guys with details ,it amounts to this
1. Get the amount high $250,000 buy in
@ get the blinds high and an ante too
3 Then realize these are company men,ie playing for the casino, like shills do , only with much more money as they are all world series winners

The company will instruct them to play good cards, not to make any high bets without the very best hand, not to move in without the nuts if possible,at least at first.Grind the Kid down with good overall playGood soox poker, house style

Well this really is good advice ,and not a bad strategy against most players ,but it is really a restriction that can be exploited
It is mechanical solid predictable non intuitive but manageable

Waco tells the kid to raise all pots or fold, move all in unless he detects a strong hand(and he goes over the basics, how to know)
,observe the players, and move in on the flop, with way too big a bet.If there is $30,000 in the bot move in
if $10,000 bet $50,000 unless they start calling, then bet more

Help these smarts to get tight, scared, careful ,in other words weak at the knees

Money whip these guys the way they do the working stiffs they usually play

He figures the kid is outclassed if he tries to grind ,it doesn't really matter if the Kid loses because the Kid is just buying an image for later,or confirming the fact that money means nothing

So rather than burden you guys who probably don't play poker, serious poker, high stakes poker
Here we go

The Kid walks in and says I might play if you guys want to play .Lets all put up $250,000
and play till somebody has it all$5000,10,000 blinds just like the series

Well,it wasn't just like the series but who is gonna question the Kid.The house was going to bach each champion but at $250,000 per, they only let four champions play, so the winner wins $1,000,000

Great,lets play

Well the first few hands the kid just calls and folds, telling them not to expect him to be easy"i've played before"

After a few hands the kid raise$50,000 and everyone folds,so he does it again and again and when 1 guy sees the flop ,the kid moves in and the champions folds his cards over and over

about 2 hours later the Kid wins it all and not one player knows what happened

Lets play again tomorrow it is time to party and then I'm going to the pool room
Out the door he goes. The KP has been watching off to the side kinda laughing
"that was quick"

word gets around and people agree, this Kid is some kind of lucky,it is just a matter of time,
and I want to be there when it's time

Our next part will find the Kid at the pool room again

look for part 4 in a new thread

i did add a new part here and i will be going to part 4
several of you guys are claiming to enjoy the story about the best score i ever heard about
most of the money was not won on the pool table, but it did start with pool as an avenue to the corridors of commerce

i forgot how much of this that i remembered after all these years
it is sad to look back at all the guys on here who became friends and have passed away

i will probably add a prop or two tomorrow or saturday

i have to go to dennison texas to look at some property with my wife

she allows me to wear the pants in the family as long as i do what i am told
and you might be surprised how seldom it includes playing pool

she has never been in the pool room, but several players drop by and she enjoys the PG versions that I limit them to

She has heard Jersey red,Ronnie Allen,Verl Horn,The Glenn Family, and seen them play on our home table. You might be surprised at the accounts of their lives that you hear or rather we heard from these guys looking back over a lifetime.

My kids have owned many fine cues, met the szamboti family, entertained the Franklins and played on the home table, but never have they been in a pool room.

this may shock some of you,but I saw too much and feared the culture.,the lure of easy money, cheap thrills and danger.I hope these stories don't encourage any of you guys to pursue a similar life

it certainly doesn't depict anything like the life I lead these days,i love the cues, treasure the friendships and hardly remember way back when
