Does anyone have any stories they'd like to share of Cecil?

I had the pleasure of meeting Cecil maybe few years back and he was a hell of a player even then though he had some "personal problems".

It was amazing to see him shoot left handed when "supposedly" he's a natural right hander. He ran out flawlessly. I can honestly say, I beat him once at a 9 ball tournament and it totally made my day :)

Thanks for sharing that pic!

I was very lucky to know Cecil. He was a great player with tons of skill. I was ultimately one of my favorite people to see when I was always on the road. Last time I saw him he was doing better. I was very sad to hear about his passing. I will miss him. Cecil remembered me about 15 years after playing me one time. I was floored by that when I saw him, he knew exactly who I was. I saw him again about 5 years later, and he was in poor health not having a good time to say the least. Again he knew me soon as I said hello...Just a amazing mind.

He had to switch hands at one point in his life, if I remember correctly, his shoulder had went bad on his left side from a car accident. So he switched from right handed to left 30 years into playing the game. He was still amazing to watch.

He always called me "Little kid from Missouri or Missouri kid"

I was lucky enough to know Cecil fairly well. We had our thing: 5 dollar a game practice one pocket, yet he wouldn't let me tell anybody that was what we were doing, haha. He used to tell me every time after we finished "if you win you learn, if you lose, you pay." I honestly get a little tear in my eye when I think of that, just had to know him I guess.

I once heard a story about Cecil that I believe. Somebody went to high school with him (in Pasadena I think, not sure), and they said he was a very good diver in high school. He never practiced or put any time into yet, yet when he would dive all the best divers in the school would just stand there and watch. I believe it because I believe world class athletes are... well, in a word.... athletic. I once asked Cecil about this diving, and he muttered something like "huh, I don't know nothing about that." I dropped it, you just had to know him to understand.

My favorite Cecil line, which I still repeat today.... every time I walked in, I'd usually be with one of my buds, he'd say "the shooters are here" and he'd smile, his smile was infectious as far as I am concerned. If he did smile at you, it was genuine, you can rest assured of that. A great guy if you really took the time to get to know him, and an amazing player.
