The majority of people in rooms don't know what 14.1 is.

They don't know

because too many pool players have left the game behind for the sake of "modernizing" pool(9 Ball/Ten Ball/7 Ball and because bar table pool helped to drive straight pool down. When people enter a pool room today, they have seen ESPN or maybe Color of Money, and that's what they believe pool is all about.

I have always made it a point to play straight pool any time I enter a new pool room. Invariably someone will walk up and ask,"What are you playing?"

That is our moment to shift out of player mode into teacher mode. This way we are able to plant the seed of the challenge and beauty of the game. Give as much information as possible to help them learn. In those moments, you will appreciate what you have given back to the game of pool, as much as any satisfaction you will receive from playing it.

While I no longer play due to injuries, I always encourage others to develop their skills. Straight pool is the foundation of all pool games. It shouldn't be the red headed step-child of pool, but the wise old sage of the game. Revered, Acknowledged, and Distributed.

I walked into the pool hall the other day and the lady asked which table I wanted.

I told her, "I'm going to play some straight pool, so I'll take one of the Gold Crowns."

Her reply was "Do you want a Diamond table or a Brunswick?"

LMAO. Luckily for me she put me on a table next to some guys that like 14.1 and the one played a game with me.

I am an avid player of straight pool and have just started back to playing after a 20 year break. Before I quit playing, I went back to my hometown to visit and stopped by a local pool hall. As I was practicing, an older gent was sitting watching me play. A younger man (20's possibly) asked me if I want to "hit some." I told him, "I am" but he had no concept of the game. The older fellow chuckled.

The younger man switched the conversation over to pool cues and began to brag about his cuestick. He asked me, "What are you shooting with?" I told him I was using a Richard Black and he said, "Never heard of them." After listening to the younger man and putting up with his vulgar language and poor manners, I responded to his statement, "When you want to play a real game, come on over." I told him, "Son, evidently, no one ever ran a 7 pack on your ass." The older man looked over to me and smiled.

You made a very good point by saying, "That is our moment to shift out of player mode into teacher mode. This way we are able to plant the seed of the challenge and beauty of the game. Give as much information as possible to help them learn. Some of the younger players are trying straight pool and are willing to learn.

It is a beautiful game.
