The Miz

Steve Mizerak was a great, great pool player, and a very classy guy. He had one of the sweetest, most beautiful strokes in the history of the game.

Ironic that he became famous for "just showin' off" in his commercial, because he was one guy who never felt the need to show off at the table. Steve just went about his business and let his game do the talking.

I could watch The Miz shoot pool all day and all night and never get tired of it.

Ya what a legend he was! In my opinion the miz, hall and strickland had the very best powerful strokes in pool and fun to watch in there prime. Rempe not far behind either! i have a huge serpia picture of the miz from the 1977 14.1 championship signed by him. $5 k would not sell this pic. It is a rare and special picture of the miz!

Miz was playing a tournament in Denver in the early '90s when I spent an hour with him for an interview for the D. Post. Really a classy guy and a good interview. He was long past his prime by that time -- something we talked about -- but remarkably informed about all things pool, and other stuff too.

We had a good discussion about politics -- I kept it off the record -- and Steve knew what was going on in the world. Very sharp guy indeed.

Steve was a very intelligent man (a schoolteacher) and a GREAT pool player. Possessor of perhaps the most powerful stroke I ever saw, coupled with a soft touch when necessary. He was considered the best tournament player of the 70's, bar none. He and Buddy ruled the roost back then. Sigel came next.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned Miz's cueball (position play).

When he was still around the Metuchen, NJ area, you could see him at all the local tourney's. One of the more "notorious" weekly tourneys was the one at West End Billiards. This was like a mini pro tour stop, with several top pros that would show up like Hopkins, Miz, Colavita, Ervolino, etc. One of the things that impressed me was Miz's touch. He was great with his cueball when he needed to jsut move it around a little bit, in tight spots. If anything, once he got inline, he would keep his CB on a string. Awesome touch and great control.

He was well informed enough to give up pool and go back to college!
I used to have an artical from the UK stating how he beat a couple of snooker world champions Steve Davis was one and I cant recall the other, I think they were playing snooker and pool:wink:.

Yeah they played snooker - davis won 4-1 - and straight pool, which I think Mizerak won 2-1? Anyway, here are the links:
