I've been wondering about the Mosconi Cup and how it is put together.....Who chooses the players to be on the team? What is at stake besides national pride and a trophy? Do the players receive any cash prizes? For that matter, if anyone could tell me the same things about the U.S. golf teams that play an International team....Do the professionals get paid to play in these kinds of tournaments? Thanks for any info.

I don't know all the details but I do know that if the winner of the US Open is an American, they get a spot. Since this years winner wasn't american, the spot was given to one of the guys simply by going on the UPA rankings. I do know that each player is also paid a sum of money to play in the event. It's not all the info you were looking for but it's a start. ;)

You may want to ask the Matchroom Sport PR guy Luke Riches. Google will almost instantly give you his email address. There is a Mosconi Cup website.

Hey Jewett, maybe we can get invited to the Macaroni Cup. You and me take on Byrnes and Shamos for a milkshake.
We got the nuts!

I think there are better choices right now for the US team besides Jeremy Jones and Charlie Williams.

Combination of spots from the respective rankings (Euro Tour and UPA) and also wildcard picks, is what it has been in the past, not sure if this is still the system used.

I heard the players were paid $8,000 each for appearing in the Mosconi Cup, forgotten if that was last year or the year before.

The Mosconi Cup is primarily an exhibition event, presenting top pool players in an entertaining and competitive atmosphere. I think Matchroom Sport chooses the players for several reasons, and not just ranking. I suspect that one of the main criteria is continuity and recognizability. I also suspect appearance on camera is a factor. Matchroom produced an amazing 5-10 minute intro clip for the 2004 event that they showed at the opening banquet. I suppose it was also shown on the live broadcast. Did any of it get into the very shortened US version? For those who didn't see it, think "Magnificent Seven" with your favorite pool players cast as desperados, mixed in with an opening from "Mission Impossible."

Did you mean the 2004 Bob, or the 2003, which was in Vegas? Assuming you meant the 2003, as you know they were showing these videos on big plasma TV screens hung around the lighting rig of the table, which was a great way to present information to the audience. Overall the tournament presentation was excellent, both in the arena and in the live feed shown almost everywhere in the civilised World except the nation that both hosted and won the tournament. None of those rinky-dink home-made scoring strings with painted polystyrene balls they use in big American tournament like the US Open!

Of course they also put together a repeating loop of Strickland's missed 7 ball that lost the 2002 Mosconi Cup in his match against Steve Davis and then showed this repeatedly before their much-heralded rematch in 2003 when Davis blanked Strickland 5-0.

2003 in Vegas. I had forgotten about the 2004 which was in The Netherlands and I missed it.

Yes.

Secret agent Ortmann rounds up the team for Europe and also was taking covert photos of the Americans arriving at Heathrow.

IIRC
