The most important things in pool are Fundamentals???

Most of the practice time (80%) I use is to practicing the fundamentals (pre-shoot routines, stance, aim, grip, elbow, cue action ......... ) by shooting different type of straight-in stop / stun/ follow shots again and again, every time and everyday when I practice the pool. The rest of time, I try to limit the drills to practice the bank shots and "L drills" only since my banking skills are weak but they're important to the 8-ball game. And the "L drill" can help my speed, constant and position play. This is because I strongly believe that "the fundamentals" are the core of the play, especially for the long- term development.

I feel..... I have improved!

Do you think I am on the right path now??

Thanks!!

Success at this game requires the willingness to perform monontonous repetitions of fundamental skills.

If a the face of a clock represents what you can work on then 1/2 of the clock is fundamentals. Paraphrased from Jerry B in BCA video Play Pool right.

The type of pratice drills you are executing call for good alignment, and knowledge and ability to know and hit center ball. Being that center ball is the core of our games then I'd say its pretty obvious as to why your improving.

That L Drill for positioning and speed is just going to ante you up even higher by using your knowledge of center ball and ingraining the feel of the needed adjusted speed/spin.

If you enjoy those drills I suggest adding the Circle Drill and the Crucifix Drill

the crucifix can be found on blackjacks youtube site here...and its a darn good one too.

You are most definitely on the right path. The only two ways for you to miss a shot are you either aimed at the wrong place, or there was a flaw in your fundamentals that caused you to fail to deliver the cue ball to the point where you were aiming.

Developing a consistent delivery system is all about fundamentals. Combine a consistent, repeatable stroke, solid routines, and a solid aiming system, and you will find great success at this game.

Each of us is different, but what ever works for you that improves your ability to make shots and control your cue ball is the right way to go, and that is all there is in a simple little nut shell.

Thanks Keebie. I should point out, that "The Crucifix" is an advanced level drill for 14.1 continuous, or straight pool. My book Lessons In 9 Ball has an entire section that covers many drills.

Here are some examples of the drills that are in that book.
