The new APA cost...What do you think?

I'm writing an article about the league and was told the reason for the $5 increase is so players can access their data online. While most of the AZers will certainly access this data (if they can leave AZ long enough to do so), is this something most of the league players will welcome or complain about? What are your thoughts? I think it's a great idea, especially for all the stat driven players, such as myself, that can't get enough.
 
As far as their increase It cost to make additions to any business. Do they need the extra $5 LOL. The online data is great in my opinion. TAP was already using some sort of system with that from what I saw on their site. Those stats can tell you quite a bit if you are into the sort of thing. I think you will see all leagues do the data thing eventually.

Per year. It's part of the annual APA membership fees. This is the first time they've raised it since the 90's.
 
If the $5.00 is only per year times by 250,000 players that $1,250,000 right? I guess as a member I would be interested in how much the software/system cost and how much they were paying someone per year to update it.
Ithink in these times if someone has the sole responsibility of updating and is proficient at it it should not pay a salary of more than $75k per year. That leaves a little over and so lets just say the system itself cost $1,000,000. There is still a chunk left over.
So what happens next year? its been paid for so what happens to the $$ does it go into a pot for the players? or travel fund? Its none of my business but you asked, I am sure the majority of that $$ is going back to the players some how.
 
Actually, the software model being used was ripped off. The stat feed code and basic design is basically being stolen from some programmers who developed a template for APA leagues to use for their websites with forums, stat info, etc.

LOL shhhhhhh don't stir the pot bfdlad.. you know most APA players can't do the math... or at least get a commission from the calculator companies for them buying calcs to try & figure it out. :D

IMHO, you'd have to pay me a LOT more than that to keep up to date with all the stats for EVERYBODY. That's a pretty laborious task, not just on the part of the computer, but the person who is going to inevitably get plenty of emails saying "why isn't my 9-ball break recorded?" or "I ran out last night you bleepity bleep piece of bleeping bleep"...you get the point.

Yes. The only ball you NEED to call in APA 8ball is the eight. Everything else can be slopped in and you continue your turn at the table. Nothing worse than a SL2 slopping a ball in and getting position on the eight to put themself on the hill. Thats like playing a 7, 2 off suit in poker and flopping a full house.

Ok, I see your point so then hire 2 people and pay them both $125k Per year. Still alot of $$ left over. I'm just saying as a paying member/player I would want to know where the $$ was going.

Well, if it's the first time it's gone up since the 90's, then it sounds fair to me......online info is good as long as they take the time to do it right.....at lunch, we were discussing how the Wendy's 99 cent menu has increased.....the side salad is $1.29, the biggie drink is now $1.79, and today's 99 cent burger is a pitiful mockery of the old Texas Double :D

your avatar picture, mixed with comparing pool to the Wendys dollar menu just made me litterally laugh out loud! that's hilarious.
 
There's only so much the individual league operators can do with the data. My old LO in Colorado did a LOT of work with Crystal Reports (if memory serves) and would post PDFs up on his site with current stats for the varying divisions he ran. But, it was just basic info - current team standings (matches won/rankings), and for teams as a whole, some basic stats for the team members (wins/losses, win percentages, that sort of thing).

In the past, the APA home office was *very* careful (read: paranoid :D) about the player/team data. I imagine they were afraid someone might get in there and "change their grades" so to speak. It used to be that the database server that stored all the player/match data wasn't even connected to the net in general, even behind a firewall. I guess someone finally convinced the old guard there that they should progress into the new century with the rest of us. :D
 
I don't think any APA player should complain about $5 when most leave the bar with bar tabs 10 times that or more in one night. I really don't think many will care about stats and my league operator already had stats and a webpage in place that size you up with players in your own league area and show you your match schedule and win/loss % for the session as well as a lifetime stat section.

If I had a say in what they did with the $5 I would suggest they take that $5 and build one heck of a nice pro tour. Think of the possibilities, not to mention APA could own pool. They already have a successful business model that works and they could use pro pool to boost their numbers even more. The magazine they mail out could promote pro players so that league players know who the greats are in our game. Think of the sponsorship they could build with what they already have in place. All billiard related manufacturers would surely want to get involved. AHHHHH....And then I wake up from my farfetched dream and face the reality that APA will probably never do anything of this nature. What a pity!!!
 
i dont mind the extra $5 especially since it hasnt been raised since the 90's. since they did mention they would they would would put all the stats on the website, i would like to see that happen this year. they also raised the weekly dues 2 or 3 years ago. it used to be $30.
