The Next Level?

I have been playing pool for about 2.5 years now starting in a college fraternity basement. I consider myself an intermediate player that runs some 8 ball racks, struggles a little more in 9ball, and need work on consistency and CB control. When I first got started playing, I practiced by shooting racks only. As I have realized where I want my game to be, I have started playing less racks and focusing more on drills and practice shots.

So I guess my questions are how to break my mediocracy and take it to the next level? thats probably pretty broad and an easy statement to throw out there, but: Am I on the right path of focusing more heavily on drills, while still shooting some racks? Are there any must have instructional DVD's? I now have a house and picked up a table, but find myself still struggling with shots I've been trying to overcome for awhile. Thanks for any suggestions!

personal instruction is the best way to go.. get someone accredited who does it professionally...good players can help with strategy.. picking the right shots.. pattern play they can tell you how to get on the 5 ball from where you are...

but the best instructors.. cover the fundamentals .. they tailor a shooting process unique to you... avoid anyone who says this is the only way to do it... pick guys who say as long as a stroke meets these minimum requirements it's a good stroke..

make sure they do video analysis so they can show you what you are doing .. right or wrong.. it's a real eye opener trust me on that..

good luck:grin:

AN instructor is a great suggestion. I would also add competition, as often as possible. Get in some tournaments and put some pressure on yourself. This will give you a short term goal and keep some excitement in it. Good luck!

"What's the matter kid? Don't ya like CLOWNS?"
your avatar scares the hell out of me!
thanks! :)

on a serious note though, if you can or already do, try and videotape yourself playing. it really does reveal alot about you and your playing that you really dont get unless you see it from that perspective. i didnt believe it, then i tried it, and now i do! lol. guess i just had to learn the hard way lol.

What area do you live in? SPF=randyg

I am just outside of Indianapolis on the NE side. I'm going to video tape myself shooting some games tonight to see if I can pick out anything blatant. Thanks for that suggestion, never even thought of doing that.

Thanks for everyones thoughts. I am def. going to get an instructor... eventually. Gotta save up the cash. For now, just watchin DVD's and practicing. Thanks again!

the next best thing to getting a qualified instructor, is to work on your mental game. You will find when you get to playing perfect and got the mechanics you still cant beat the better players....its because they out class you with their mental state...the mental state of the game is second to none, mechanics are the easy part. Effren wins just like tiger woods, when he shoots he either makes the ball or plays safe (those are the only two kinds of shots) with perfect physical game you can be great but without the top notch mental attitude you can never become really great. The MENTAL part of the game is the hardest to learn.

I took my first lesson tonight, it was from Gene Albrecht on Perfect Aim. I figured it was a good place to start and Gene was passing through Indy so it worked well. I took away a lot from the lesson. Really a lot of info and gave me something to work on the next few weeks.I think what Gene is teaching is def. worthwhile and will benefit my game and am glad I went this route.
