**The Oficial "What you hate about Amsterdam Billiards NYC'' thread**

the main complaint has been how expensive amsterdam is.

I have been playing at Amsterdam for a little over a year now.... played all year in the leagues and MAYBE 7 people in the place know me by name, so I really have no bias ties to the place.

I however, don't mind the price. I believe you get what you pay for and your paying for the environment. I also dont mind paying $16 in green fees for my league and Ive yet to walk away with $1 in 3 seasons. Doesnt bother me a bit. Now, if you cant afford the table time, thats a different problem all together and I dont think its the fault of the room and I dont think its a reason to hate.

A lot of people complain about the "cliquey-ness" and yea, a lot of the people there are friends with each other. Thats bound to happen when people keep going to the same place for 10 years. Personally, I've never seen this as a problem. But to each his own I guess.

Anyway, I guess I really don't see how anyone can HATE a poolroom... especially one as nice as Amsterdam.

If I where to claim a "HOME ROOM" Amsterdam would be it!! The people are great, the table are top notch, and nearly ALL of the PLAYERS will share tips and info with you. Just the other night i was practicing when I heard a voice say, "Floyd, let me show you something"...It was Tony Robles! Hell, Jude stopped by my table (without me asking) and gave me a quick tip that upped my pocketing by 30%. Of course it took him 2 minutes to explain, and I am STILL working to master it. I like playing on the two tight pocket table, 11 and 4. When they ain't available I take anything, 20 minutes or so after I am playing I hear over the loud speaker...."Floyd, move to table 11!!! I don't even have to ask!! Now that's a good room!! If I were to change one thing, I would vary the music a little. But when I am really focused, I don't really hear it!

The biggest thing I hate about Amsterdam Billiards is that it isn't in San Diego! I love being in that room!

(Maybe I just wanna live in NY)

It's the same everywhere

I haven't visited this thread in a while. Thought I would read it to compare to the general publics views on other pool rooms compared to mine. Complaints are the same. I got complaints last night about a $0.50 soda, a $2.25 pool time and a $1 cue rental. All of them were apparently grossly overpriced. One good thing I noticed over the past 25 years is that all the know-it-alls that knocked my familys pool room and opened thier own room have drastically changed thier tune after seeing it from the other side. We helped at least a dozen other rooms open in St. Louis when pool was in a boom during the 80s. All the owners (over time) confessed they had no idea the headaches they were in for. Most of them are not very enthusiastic about the money they make.

I have never been to Amsterdam Billiard Club; but I think if they have been in business for more than 20 years, they must be doing a lot more right than wrong. Pool is in a horrible slump, and so is our economy. If they are surviving, then give them some slack. Anyone that can do better, then put Amsterdam in their place and open a bigger better room. Open a room with 150 Gold Crown Vs everywhere, with 100,000 square feet and all topless Playboy model rack girls for every table. Add $5000 to a weekly tournament. Sell all your bottled beer for $0.99.:D This is a pool room everyone wants but even Mr Rourke and Tattoo couldn't swing this one. (Obscure TV reference) What I like about Amersterdam is they are going through the grind everyday just to make ends meet and maybe make a little profit. They are dealing with the complaints about damaged tables and house cues every day. Dealing with drunks or other drama I am sure. The glory days of pool in the 80s are never coming back. Maybe we will have another boom in pool but it will be different. The pool playing public needs to take a high school level course in economics so they can at least speak with some authority when they have complaints about businesses prices. I wish everyone at Amsterdam the best of luck in running a business under these conditions. You deserve both the dollars you make over it. :)

Good luck and continued success.

 I was just searching the thread to see if I can get any info on table rates for Amsterdam and found this monster of a thread. I want to apologize in advance if I'm bringing back some hateful feelings by resurrecting such a heated thread.

Amsterdam brings back so many great memories for me. I went to Hunter High School which was less than 10 blocks from Eastside Amsterdam. I used to cut school once in a while so I can play there during the powerplay hours. Great atmosphere, lots of room, decent prices. After moving out to college and now on to work, apparently lots have changed. Two poolhalls have converged into one. Prices have gone up (naturally, as does almost everything around this city). I did stop by the new place but didn't have a chance to shoot as they told me the waiting list was 2hrs. (At least they were honest and didn't say any BS to try to get me to wait. The two gentlemen at the counter were extremely nice and checked back with me constantly to ensure that they didn't forget about me. I ended up leaving without shooting but was pleased by their customer service).

So I'm once again interested in playing @ Amsterdam. I want to join the league. How much are they charging now? Is it still $16 per match? Is there BCA registration fee? Team registration fee?

Thanks,
Adam

We're now in the 7th week of the league and the next one won't begin until the second week of January. Yes, green fees are $16 per match. Registration is $35 and there is a BCA and ACS fee ($10 each). You can register for the league through the site (www.amsterdambilliards.com).

The BCA and ACS fees only apply to Team 9-ball. That is also the only league that sends winners to Las Vegas to compete in the Nationals. That league has grown to 40 teams, features professional players Tony Robles, George "Ginky" SanSoucci, Jennifer Barretta, Steve Lipsky, Gina Kim-Lipsky, Caroline Pao, Liz Ford, Mika Immonen and probably a few others I'm failing to remember.

The strongest league at the club though is undoubtedly Amsterdam's straight pool league during the Winter/Spring session. That's the session leading up to the World Championship so many of the room's top players will join then. The same big names (add Danny Barouty and Jim Gottier). The only difference is the frequency. It's a smaller league so there are big matches every week.
