**The Oficial "What you hate about Amsterdam Billiards NYC'' thread**

I was going to say the same exact thing! And of course, I know what it's like, cause about 2 years ago, they really were around the corner from me!! I miss those day:(

(My avatar picture was taken at Amsterdam Billiards...)

I can't imagine why people seem to have such a problem with that place. I've spoken on a thread about it before, but of all the pool halls I have ever been a "regular" at, Amsterdam Billiards is definitely the one closest to my heart.

Yeah and you never saw the Eastside Amsterdam. That one was by far the best.

If you think they're doing it wrong, feel free to open your own room. What's the saying? Put your money where your mouth is!

Yogi Berra once said, "Oh, nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded!"

You're right Jude! What the hell was I thinking??? How could anybody NOT love Amsterdam Billiards! Its the best place ever! I mean hell!!! Everyone on this site HAS to have the same opinions, right???

Listen, you and I have disagreed on topics before and what that tells me is that you and I have different views/opinions on things. What's good for you may not be good for me. Does that make you right and me wrong?

And btw, what the hell does that quote have to do with this thread at all?

The quote has a lot to do with this thread... for some reason people have such a beef with Amsterdam... yet, it is one of the most (if not the most) successful pool rooms in NY. With a deep and rich history and many, many customers throughout the area and all over the country. Pros and amateurs alike. That room has done a lot for NY pool... and no matter how many people can form a list of things they hate about it, somehow Amsterdam still remains on top.

With all due respect, this thread is all about what people dislike about Amsterdam. Not its number of clientel.

And whether you or Jude or anyone else agrees with someone else's reasons for liking or disliking a certain poolroom, that doesn't make their opinions any less valid. And it certainly doesn't mean they are not entitled to their opinions.

If you really want to split hairs, regardless of how many players it has, regardless of how successful it may be, there are still plenty of people out there who have their gripes with the place. And THAT's what this thread is about. Not how many people go there.

Table Prices

I used to live in Seattle and there were two decent rooms downtown. Jillians and Belltown Billiards. I can't remember the exact numbers, but I know Jillians was close to $12 per hour on the weekends and Belltown was not that far off.

I now live in Salt Lake and hear people *****ing about the table time all the time. I always laugh because the table time here is $4 an hour tops. As has been stated before, the price of rent will most likely drive the prices in the room.

See though, I think you are confusing my disagreeing with you with my telling you that your point isn't valid. No one ever said anyone's point isn't valid. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions... and that's why I responded with mine.

No, I literally mean if you think they're doing it wrong OPEN YOUR OWN ROOM. I'm serious. I'd love it if New York had more rooms. I mean, last I checked their wait-lists were exceeding an hour. I'm sure if they dropped their rates, that would clear up the problem in no time.

On the contrary, you have a thread like this and you can EXPECT Amsterdam loyalists to reply and harshly. To many of us, this isn't the same as talking about rules of 9-ball - whether we should break from the box or not. You attack Amsterdam Billiards and you're attacking our friends. So yes, you're entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to disagree with you.

Does anyone play at Slate?
Just curious if that room is still more of a social club or
if any real players go there?

Calling a billiard hall a rip-off for pricing is a bit silly, each area has different costs. Table time in Boston on weekends is about $12-14 an hour, even in the smaller places. Boston Billiards and Jillians are just as pricy as Amsterdam.

Luckily I found a nice place in RI, about an hour drive from my house, all you can play specials even on weekend nights is at most $9 7pm-1am, less on weekdays and days. plug Chalks end plug :-)

There are a small handful of regulars there. I know Bob Watson is their housepro and he draws in some APA folk but on the whole, it's more and more a social club. They've taken out all but one row of tables on the street-level floor and no longer have ANY snooker tables. I literally wanna cry every time I'm reminded that it used to be Chelsea Billiards.

Ahhh, but see... this is where you're wrong Jude. I'm not attacking anyone. I'm not attacking you or your friends. Someone asked what I and others dislike about Amsterdam. I shared my opinion. Now you are entitled to disagree. Sure.

But you seem to sit on a high horse and think that by disagreeing, you can tell others like Brooklyn Jay, myself, and everyone else who pointed out reasons for their distaste with Amsterdam that they are wrong. Not so. Maybe Jay's math was a little off, but that doesn't change these basic facts: Amsterdam is crowded. The wait is too long. The rates are high. The drinks are pricey.

Tell me I'm wrong on those fronts Jude. You can't.

If you don't like that I don't like Amsterdam as much as some other rooms, take comfort in knowing that I won't be there often enough for you to really be concerned at all.

Oh, and just for the record, I gotta tell ya. I may be an a**-hole in the eyes of many on here. I know that. But really, all I do is share my opinion. That doesn't seem too welcome around here these days. You have this online persona that appears to be smug and arrogant. You love the sound of your own voice. You love seeing your opinions posted online. And I gotta tell you... you really come off as a pompous individual. You may not think so, but its true.

I, for one, am of the belief that several years ago AZ Billiards forums were started with the notion that it would be a great place for people to post ideas and share opinions online. Nowadays, it seems like any time someone asks for an opinion, it had BETTER be popular because otherwise everyone gets offended and starts telling you that you're wrong. Frankly, its all become rather ridiulous. Its crap like this that makes me avoid this place. Seldom does a day go by when Jude Rosenstock the great, or others like him jump on here and spew their 'expert' knowledge by telling others how wrong they are and, yada, yada, yada. It really has become increasingly ridiculous.

To me, it's like if someone started a thread entitled "The Official "What you hate about GG11" thread"

(GG11 is, of course, a poster here on AZ... but most importantly, she is my best friend)

You can be damn well sure I will be defending her to the end on that thread. That's the same way a lot of us feel about Amsterdam... surely you can understand the passion this could ignite from us?

You know, I kept my posts confined to what you had to say. I responded to your opinions and left it at that. You want to turn this into a flaming war with name calling and you're the one who brings the forum to the gutter. I'm sorry if you think I'm arrogant but this is my home room and thus far, the critics' posted information has needed correction. I didn't start slinging mud just because someone didn't agree with me.

EDIT: The very thread title is an attack on Amsterdam. I see it as nothing else. It is a business comprised of personal friends of mine and many others in this forum and by your name calling, you're now attacking me.

I'm not sure if one has to do with the other. I don't know who Mr. Jordan is or if he even knows GG.
