AuntyDan said:I wish someone could design an interchangable tip/ferrule system for shafts. I know those cheesy screw-in tips on the cues they sell in Walmart are a joke, but a really well designed high-quality system should be possible. I'd guess it would be necessary to combine the ferrule with the tip to ensure adequate solidity in the system compared to traditional methods.
If I could buy an entire replacement tip and/or tip/ferrule combo for less than a visit to the local cue mechanic and it felt no different from normal glue-on tips I'd buy it. This kind of system would also let you easily experiment with different tip types, not to mention being able to carry spares in your cue case instead of multiple shafts and to have those tips already broken in and ready to go.
Palmer already did this in the mid 60's, although not as elaborate as you mention. I bought a spare but the problem was it did not quite fit flush on the shaft. After using either one over time the fit became worst. Wood gives over time so the materials screwed together would need to be improved. Then who knows what you'd be looking at on the end of your shaft. LOL
Besides the end mass fanatics would have a field day on this one since Palmer used a 1/8" steel stud for the ferrule to screw on to. They played fine but according to the EM Gods the c/b could end up in Texas.
