Good, Bad, or Different or Indifferent, Earl is 'GREAT' for Pool, PERIOD!!!
Why,??
Because without a persona or a character, the game of pool, even though one of the most participated sports in the World, is not a game that really entertains the general public or the person who is not an afficianado of the game. To have people that like to play pool want to watch pool on tv or at a tournament or wherever, you have to have more than just Awesome pool players. You cant just a a machine that gets up to the table and shows no emotion and just runs rack after rack after rack. That might have a group interested for a while but not for long.
Earl is an awesome player and more than that is an emotional player and he shows his emotions not only on the inside but on the outside for all to see. And, many people enjoy seeing what someone are feeling on the inside transferred into physical and verbal actions or words. Not to guess what someone is feeling but to shove it down your throat. It gets the spectator closer to being a player on the table and that is where the true passion for most people lie, in playing the game.
Earl, wears his emotions and feelings on his sleeve and he is one of the fiercest competitors in the World, and at the age of 52+, he is showing that he can still fight with the best of the best and has been an eilte level player for 30 years. That is even hard to fathom, the time dedication and wheelpower it takes to continually play this game that you can always improve at but if you dont maintain the time and dedication on the table then your skillset will evaporate and you can see that Earl still to this day has the passion for the game.
You need emotion, human factor in the game and this has to come out in the atmosphere the pool players are involved in. Without that entertainment value, the world of the pool 'spectator' is doomed to slowly wither and die on the vine.
Love me, hate me, kill me, for what I say, I dont care 'quoted by Earl Strickland' and that is true to a point, but believe me, someone that acts out as much as he does, really does want the love and appreciation of the people that watch him.
Regardless, though, in a battle the most entertaining fights are the ones that have the 'GOOD GUY' and the 'BAD GUY' and as we know Earl seems to fill the part more often as the 'Bad Guy' but he does it soo soo soo well.
But that is how I feel,
