The perfect job for a pool player that has to work part time to pay the bills is nursing. One year nursing school with a GED for an LPN. Two years to three for an RN. After you get your feet wet in a hosptal you can work part time agency at about $25 an hour for LPN (or more in some big cities). An RN can make anywhere from $30 an hour to $400 to $500 a shift. I did it for a dozen years and it worked out well for me. Two or three shifts a week and I had a weeks pay in my pocket and plenty of time for pool and partying Johnnyt

You're underestimating the pay scale...my daughter is an RN...passed her licensing exam at age 20, two years out of high school. Went to the nursing school offered by a local community college. Now works as a "travelling nurse", filling in vacancies around the country as they come up. Picks and chooses job locations. Apartment is furnished for her. Her current job pays $45 per hour...with "free rent"! You're right...a great job for a pool player. Especially for one who would like to check out the pool scene in various places.

Holy Guacamole!! Lucky girl.

Well, it's not all a bed of roses...she called some time ago, saying she was tired of nursing, wanted to become a real estate sales person instead...Wife & I both asked her if she was crazy...;)

I've thought about doing this considering that I might be getting laid off in a coupla weeks. Of course I don't know if I am or not since my company doesn't have the common decency to let us know anything. My job right now is pretty good for pool. I work 4 days on and 4 off and I have 4 weeks vacation. A weeks vacation for me works out to be 12 days off since I'd have my 4 days off, the 4 days I would have worked and then 4 more days off. Looks like it's gonna hit the fan soon though :(

Oh well I'm gonna go practice for a while to get my mind off of it.

Yes, my wife and I did 3 traveling gigs. I liked it, she didn't. In those days I was pimping my hand made jewelry and was making a killing in the hospitals we worked at and doing a flea markets a few times a month. Johnnyt

ill travel around with her and play pool....jk.

my ex is an RN and the school is no joke. I was a medic/lpn/emt in the army. I tip my hat to anyone that passes that. most programs have a fairly high failure rate. and u can only fail something once. if u fail any 2 things your out of the program.

my wifes a nurse

i tip my hat to all nurses. she said the school was almost as tuff as becoming a doctor. hell nurses do all the work, know all the meds and deal with the families through the tuffest time in their lives. the doc walks in says his 2 or 3 words and out the door he goes.... then the patient poops and the nurse gets to deal with that... so it isnt all glory at all.

she does make great money and never worries about a lay off.

san jose and freemont in california have the highest payrate right now for nurses.

the travelling nursing option is great for someone that can up and travel, we did it for 4 years and never paid rent. i highly suggest that...

Cheers on my 2 cents..

I love my nurse..

That sounds good but that's a field that's really hard to get into these days.

No it isn't, there is a huge nursing shortage in this country right now. Anyone who's willing to devote themselves to nursing school for a couple of years can be a nurse. My mother is a nurse and so is my step dad, my brother is now going to school to be a nurse. Nursing is wide open right now.

The good thing about nursing is that there are so many routes that you can get into, ICU, post partum, ER...

I've worked in a hospital the past 13 years, the company I work for can get me right into the nursing program with no waiting list (because they donate $ to one of the nursing schools) AND they would be willing to pay for it. Call me crazy, but I have NO desire to go into nursing. Thankfully, the job I have now is 12 hour shifts, 3 days a week, self scheduling and is in a hospital. It pays decent, I have the best health benefits (24 accupuncture visits a year, 12 chiropractic and 6 massages) I've heard of AND I don't have to deal with hands on patient care, cleaning anybody or what not.

I finished half way through respiratory school. I know hands on care isn't for me. I don't like the idea of playing with plem, vomit or anything brown.

Looking back on it and if I actually liked school, I would probably go into nuclear medicine or ultrasound if I had the patience to sit through a class.

It takes a strong individual to go into and finish nursing and I have the utmost respect for anyone who wants to go into nursing or the health care field in general.

a buddy of mines going to school to be an rn right now. he says it's hard. the demand's so high that it pays more to do the work than to teach people to do the work.

Hospitals are on their knees beging for nurses. Johnnyt

from what my friend told me is that that's the reason the jobs are hard to fill. he says it pays more to be a nurse than to teach people to be a nurse

Yep nurses are in very high demand right now. I've been browsing through the job listings lately and nursing jobs make up the majority and the vast majority of decent paying jobs. Male nurses are actually in higher demand because they can move heavier patients by themselves.

I'm keeping it in consideration right now as far as what the hell am I gonna do if I get laid off. I'm a mechanical person by nature and nursing is not mechanical, but it is in high demand and will only get higher as the baby boomers retire.

On a side note hitting the tables today got my mind off this junk for a few hours. For some reason when I play/practice it doesn't matter how crappy of a day I am having it all seems to disappear when I break the rack.

are there schools set up just to teach nursing? if the jobs are in such high demand why is it more people don't get into the field. i'm thinking about getting into this nursing thing now

Lots of community colleges have nursing programs. I'm sure there are schools of nursing considering the high demand for that program.

I figure if I get laid off I can go in for LPN and make it through in a year which is about all the time I can take. Once I get through that I can do further education for RN which is another year.

Fireman's hours sound awful good. Any firehouses have tables? If not, I guess you're, um, hosed for a few days at a time!

Newspapers aren't so bad, either, for the total amount of hours. But you lose a lot of the prime time ... most gigs are 4-11 p.m. And few people get 2 weekend days off. Not so bad for action players, probably. But never work in the sports section! Those guys have to wait up for the West Coast games, and work weekends, of course. Then again, newspapers are morphing into 24/7 Web operations, so that's all gonna change.
