"The Pool Experience"

The other day, I was watching QVC out of the corner of my eye and saw a product that made me get up out of my comfortable Herman Miller Embody chair to learn more.

As soon as I saw this product, which was selling for $59.95, I thought this is genius. Why not do this with a pool twist?

If I was still traveling the pool tournament trail, I'd do it myself, but I don't have the time needed to do this justice. If done correctly, I think it would sell.

The product on QVC was "The Bible Experience." It was an integration of music and famous celebrities each taking a turn reading portions of the Bible. Now, you might think this is boring if you ain't into religion, but I found it making me want to listen to the Bible, just to hear those voices of the actresses and/or actors. Samuel Jackson, as an example, was the voice of God.

If somebody was to ask, say, 20 to 30 famous pool celebrities to describe their best shot or relay the best tournament win or share the best action match and record their voices, they could put together a CD collection, much like "The Bible Experience," and call it "The Pool Experience."

This would take an enterpreneur who's willing to invest time and money to do this. I think they could offer the pool person a nominal amount to share a 5-to-10-minute contribution and then offer to pay them the same amount after the CDs are published and go up for sale. The compensation could be worked out to satisfy both sides.

There is a risk to be taken here, but if done correctly, with class, I think it would work. Make it a numbered limited edition of 300 copies only.

If this turned out to be a successful endeavor, there could be The Pool Experience Volume I, Volume II, Volume III.

Imaging listening to, as an example, Earl Strickland talk about his million-dollar win in Texas or Johnny Archer share how he twists a bankshot in the side pocket or James Walden relaying the infamous game played at the Derby City Classic or Jimmy Mataya talking about anything. :p

I think hearing the actual player's voice with the audio snippets would be kind of cool. If somebody with talent could integrate the music to not sound like cheap ESPN or porno flick music, I believe this would be cool.

You could even break it down to the tournament soldier edition and the action player edition, to carry this theme even further.

These are just my morning random thoughts. What do you think?

I'm not sure anybody has ever heard the story about James Walden's infamous match at the Derby City Classic. They named a room after him at future DCCs at the Executive West.

Oh, one more thing. I am thinking audio only instead of video. Audio can be listened to in more places like a car or an iPod; whereas, a video limits one's ability to watch it. Sometimes listening is easier than watching, anyway.

Plus, audio-only would be more economical and leave a little to the listener's imagination as they visualize, for example, Earl Stricklind as he's reminiscing about something funny.

Sounds like a good idea. Nice pic of Earl. I'm 54 and used to be around some of the old hustlers like Puckett, Danny Jones, Jersey Red, Flyboy, and a lot of lesser known road guys (like Joe Mac and Joe Bob Humphrey). These guys really had some interesting stories. Also enjoyed Ronnie Allen's stuff, that can be found various places. Hope you are well JAM!!

Gosh, those would be some incredible pool legends to record. Imagine their voices being heard by future generations of pool folk who never got the chance to meet and/or know them like you. Imagine listening to Flyboy or Jersey Red relay a few road stories; indeed, they would be priceless gems.

Ronnie Allen would be excellent. Much like Jimmy Mataya, he does have that gift of gab, so anything he shares would be cool to listen to.

The thing I like about this is that it has the potential to grow. You could have three volumes: one volume for favorite pool shots described of each player, one volume for favorite action games shared by each player, and one volume for the best tournament win of their careers.

Would love to listen to a few pool tales by Scotty Townsend, Dave Matlock (who has a very distinctive voice), Bobby Pickle (someday), Kid Delicious, Liljon, Shannon Daulton, Dennis Hatch, Cole Dixon, Tony Watson, just to name a few. ;)

Nobody can tell a story like Tony Watson can. He's a trip!

Your's is a great idea! Let's start with a 6 to 12 volume just from Keith. I'll bet it would be a top seller on here. I would love it.

He's got some really funny tales. When you hear his voice speak about them, it makes it even funnier!

For Keith's contribution, I think having him share one of his road trips with Buddy Hall would be kind of funny. Actually, have him tell his version and then listen to Buddy's version. Priceless!

How about Diana Hoppe sharing her experience of one of the most difficult pool photos she's ever had to take?!

What goes on behind the scenes sometimes is kind of interesting! :p

JAM, you've probably heard these, but here's one from Ronnie Allen talking about who is the best of all time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c05AHZrvbU0

I have heard that before. I love his misspeak: "conversatia" instead of "conversation." :D

I actually spoke to Ronnie and recorded a few of his tales years ago over the telephone before he came out with these audio recordings thereafter. He always wanted to do these, and I'm glad he followed through. They are truly pool gems.

One of my favorite YouTube video clips was the Johnston City as told by the "man in the Python shoes," Minnesota Fats, who mentions a young Ronnie Allen, a "Texas carnival owner." LOL

In fact, you can see Ronnie in a few of the shots. Minnesota Fats saying, "Aint' Nixon hustling? Ain't he shaking hands 24 hours a day? Ain't everybody hustling? Everybody is scuffling. You got a hustler and a scuffler," and then Fats explains the difference. Love that: Johnston City Pool Hustling

Hey early riser, that's a great idea. As for music, I would say let the individual choose his or hers, just deep the volume down. It would be nice to have a choice of video, audio or both. Also, I would avoid the glitter and glitz "Pool Room Junkie" type graphics.

You may, of course, put me down as a buyer. I would even pay in advance to help get the program moving, Or even make a small donation.

Jam, who are you kidding? You were not watching QVC out of the corner of your eye...:)

It was probably TV-by-appointment...:D

I cannot tell a lie. I have it on 24/7 while I'm a working. I can see it on my flat-screen TV in the other room via a mirror! If something looks cool, I jump up and go in and watch it. Yeah, I Q've.

Thanks, Dave, for the vote of confidence and your very kind, generous offer. While I have been pondering this in my mind, as I'm working, I am coming up with other ideas about this. I actually think this has promise and is doable. It would not take too much investment, I think, since it is only audio.

Audio software has come a long way. I deal with it in my industry all the time, and I am absolutely amazed at what I can do with audio today. Personally, I have about 20 or 30 different audio apps on my desktop that I use for my job.

I think if somebody were to ask, say, Pro Player A at an event if he could provide a 5- or 10-minute audio snippet for, say, 50 bucks -- CASH -- they'd do it. Explain to them the endeavor and see if they would like a cut of the profits and do it for free instead of the 50 bucks cash.

I know $50 doesn't sound like much, but when you're on the road, $50 comes in quite handy.

Some guy from Texas came by our area and paid Keith $300 to sign some stuff. He has an end product in mind, and you know what, pocketing that $300 was schweeeet! I really don't think Keith minded at all signing those items for that $300, which, BTW, he gave to me for grocery money. I have a sweetie pie, my Keithie! :grin-loving:

Some pro players may not want to partake in this endeavor, thinking they don't want their name used for profit to somebody else. This is a stumbling block that has to be worked out.

I don't think money is the problem at this juncture. I think getting 20 or 30 players to participate is where it may get murky. Older players that are retired, I don't think they would mind so much; IOW, it's free money.

One more thing. The strategy I suggest for this endeavor would be to *only* have short audio snippets of 5 or 10 minutes each.

In this day of modern technology, most folks want their news quick, immediate gratification, and don't really want to spend a lot of time listening to the same saga. Short audio snippets from different players would pique one's interest and keep their attention span.

believe it or not i'm working on a project that will be very similar to what you haved described...thanks for stealing my thunder lol j/k

kidding aside, if youre interested in participating/helping let me know

I would be glad to contribute a little bit of time and effort for sure. I'm working 24/7/365 these days, but whatever I can do that might help, I'd be happy to. As soon as the 2013 Fiscal Year Budget Request is finalized in appropriations and the presidential campaign is over, I will have more free time.

Contact me at RailbirdJAM-at-AOL-dot-com when time allows. We can exchange some ideas.

the best [real] stories, the juiciest gossip, the back room political tension, the alternative motives, the controversy - is the stuff you wont read about in any book or see in a movie...

how cool would it be to have audio archives (stories) from mosconi, hoppe, greenleaf, schaefer, all the old masters....back when pretty much everyone still carried a pistol in their coat, and whiskey was their water.

audio archives produced now would/could be just as cool. and in 100 years from now, people will be happy that someone took the time to do it.
